About The Red O

The Red O preserves the Presto-era work of Opera Software: browsers, add-ons, services and the people behind them.

Why

When Opera moved to Chromium in 2013, the Presto era quietly disappeared: download servers were cleaned up, widgets.opera.com, unite.opera.com and My Opera closed, addons.opera.com dropped its skins, themes and extensions for Presto, and with them went thousands of add-ons made by the community. This project gathers what survived, from Opera's FTP server, the Internet Archive and personal collections, and puts it back online.

Writing

How it was made

Installers come from a complete mirror of Opera's FTP server, made while it was still online, and from the community's 30th anniversary archive for the oldest versions. Pages, add-ons, screenshots and articles were recovered from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, capture by capture, then checked one by one: when a file was missing on one site, other copies were searched on mirrors, fan sites and personal collections.

Only the Presto era is published here: nothing released after 2013, except the last security updates of Opera 12. Files are offered exactly as they were published, with their original names.

Sources

Every item links back to its source: Opera's FTP server, the Wayback Machine capture it was recovered from, or the archive that kept it. Dates and facts in the texts are checked against Opera's own version history, its press releases and company pages, and the Desktop Team blog.
