Opera Unite 2009 – 2012

A web server inside the browser. With Opera Unite, your own computer could share files, photos and music, host a small website or run a chat room, without any server or hosting.

"Reinventing the Web"

Opera Unite was unveiled in June 2009 and shipped in Opera 10.10. Each Opera installation got an address like home.yourname.operaunite.com; Opera's proxy relayed visitors to your computer, even behind a home router.

Services were small applications written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, packaged as .ua files: File Sharing, Photo Sharing, Media Player, The Lounge (chat), Fridge (notes), Web Server for a whole site… Anyone could write one, and unite.opera.com listed the community's applications.

From Opera 12, in June 2012, Unite was turned off by default for new users, and Opera announced its removal. The applications that survived are available again in our Unite applications catalog.
