Description

Gin is an extremely dark, color neutral skin for Opera. Although it does have the same form-factor as the default skin I have tried my best to cut down on the rounded corners and nasty Web 2.0 feel. This skin is currently a work-in-progress, but is completely functional. I have recently added some snazzy-looking buttons and lightened up the scrollbar. At the moment Gin works perfectly with Opera 10.50 pre-alpha but has only been tested with Windows 7. If you find any graphical errors or if you have any quibbles with the appearace feel free to message me on my.opera.com.

Giving it a 4.5/5 because everything is happening perfectly for once: UI designer/skinner starts out annoyed with all the smooth, light, organic BS currently popular (5/5); community provides lots of constructive, specific critique (5/5); designer in turn responds to critiques but sticks to his guns creatively (5/5); features are rolled back when found incompatible with non-native environment / bugs found and fixed (5/5); project kept up to date even to alpha releases (5/5); - everything that normally goes wrong along the interface skin development line was handled beautifully! Unfortunately, when it gets to actual formal criticism of the skin in question, I give that about a 2 - Dark is hard to execute well, granted, but the contrast levels are erratic, there are still foundational placement/sizing issues, and it doesn't feel like it integrates very well with the app, especially since the 10.5 jump. However, none of this is a condemnation, in fact it's laudatory. The designer cares about how the skin is received as well as his own satisfaction with it, so even if I don't like this one, I'm watching Desu from now on waiting to see what other skins he churns out, because I'm sure they, too, will be quality pieces done correctly. This is a victory, and an example.

This is my favourite skin. I have just upgraded to Opera 10.50 Alpha but unfortunately the skin does not play nice due to Opera's changes. The personal tab all the text is all squished and bunched up. The Appearance options the text is whited out. The Personal options the text is whited out. I have jpegs of this if you want. Please can you update your fantastic skin to play nice with Opera 10.50 pre alpha. Thank you

there is one problem with this skin in the new opera 10.2 alpha, this skin the tabs are "cut off" and are touching the tab bar, while the skin; "Crystal Onyx" Bull remains the same and the tabs have a nice amount of space between them and the tab bar [IMHLEFT=http://files.myopera.com/samMD/files/gin%20skin%20tab%20cut%20off%20in%20opera%2010.2%20alpha.PNG]
