20 million people move to Iceland

November 1, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Servers

On Iceland, servers are always cold. Ice cold, baby.

If Iceland could count their virtual visitors after the opening of the Opera Mini data center, it would be one of the biggest tourist hotspots on the planet. With the flick of a switch, more than 20 million Opera Mini users in Europe, Africa and Asia will travel via Iceland when using their mobile phones to surf the Web. The transition is seamless and requires no action from the millions of Opera Mini users.

Why Iceland?

Besides our historical relationship, Iceland is pretty badass with its thunder & lightning volcanos and geysers. It's also the natural choice for a Data Center location. The team at Thor Data Center has implemented a Data Center solution that utilizes what Iceland has plenty of; cost effective green emission free energy and affordable cooling. The combination of these factors gives businesses around the world an option to decrease their Carbon footprint while reducing data and application hosting costs, at the same time high data security and availability is maintained.

What exactly is affordable cooling? All the snow gets shoveled on the servers?

Now I'm a virtual resident of Iceland

Very interesting, Espen. Sustainable power and auto-cooling from the local climate for the massive Opera Mini data center for EMEA...

Btw, only for Opera Mini...or supporting Opera Turbo compression for desktop and Android phones in Opera Mobile, also?
  • Knut Remi "DrLaunch" Løvli1. November 2010, 16:46

Green emission free energy provided by Hákarl vapor. Well, not quite emission free as it really reeks.

Cooling is provided by former Icelandic bankers, now shoveling snow over a grid made of their former work computers in Grímsstaðir.

Just kidding. Maybe Iceland could become the new data center capital of the world?

Is it the reason/source of recent intermittent "Oops! Internal server error!" notices?

Seems like our data packets will undergo a freezing before delivery. when does the thawing take place prior to consumption? (http://wwwdoxa.blogspot.com)

While you're over there, not a minute will pass
when I don't think about you. Always, you'll be
with me in spirit, and I'll pray for your
fortitude and safety, keeping my hope high in
your noble and courageous heart. I have faith that God
will watch over you and guide your every step
    until we're reunited.
  • Robert3. November 2010, 15:33

Iceland is definitely the coolest place in the world to have a data center :D.
  • Afreen(افرين)3. November 2010, 19:27

    Hmm..IceLand..

    too cool for servers..haha..
  • Gaddag3. November 2010, 20:28

I don't find it cool, nor funny. During preparations and after the start of this oh so great center it's almost impossible to log on to Wattpad.com, and absolutely impossible open any file in the Wattpad rss. Similar difficulties at rozhlas.cz site. All this peppered with intermittent red sploshes with oops! and "internal server error." Don't be such ego-boosters. (PS. I hate to say this, but Bolt handles this with folded hands, alas.)
