BlackBerry Basics on Opera Mini

October 1, 2012 · by Anna Rohleder

Whether you just got a new BlackBerry or you've been using one for a while, it's always good to review the basics. Here's our quick guide to getting started with Opera in BB:

Spin that wheel!

  • Roll the trackwheel to select links or put the cursor in a text field.
  • Use Alt+trackwheel to use Page up and Page down functionality.
  • You can also use the trackwheel menu to make selections in the Opera Mini browser menu.

Take the keys!

  • You can press the Enter key to activate links and without using the trackwheel menu.
  • Press the Esc key to cancel and action or close a menu.
  • Use the t and b keys to go to the top of bottom of the screen quickly.
  • To use Speed Dial, press Alt then *, followed by a bookmark number. (You don't need to press Alt before pressing the number keys.)
  • To use keyboard shortcuts, press Alt, then the # key, then the desired number key. The shortcuts are as follows:

    #,1 -New page.
    #,2 -View bookmarks.
#,3- Jump to start of main content, or beginning and end of page.
    #,4- Go to home page.
    #,5 - History.
    #,6 - Page information.
    #,7 - Save bookmark.
    #,8 - Edit settings.
    #,0- Reload.
    #, # - Navigate forward.
*, * - Toggle display of toolbars (if available).

The latest version of Opera for BlackBerry devices is Opera Mini 7, which includes an unlimited number of Speed Dials and the friendly features of the Smart Page.

Er. BlackBerry devices haven't had a trackwheel in years. This was posted in 2012 and says "you just got a new BlackBerry"? :yikes:

I guess this explains why Opera hasn't brought out Opera Mobile for the BlackBerry PlayBook (I suppose maybe they could also do Opera Mini in the Android Runtime...) or mentioned any plans (or test builds) for BlackBerry 10; they're stuck in the OS 4 days.

I suppose it's amazing Opera Mini 7 works as well as it does on BlackBerry devices, if their BlackBerry device knowledge is this many years out of date!

(By the way, in addition to hitting Enter, you can simply activate a link by selecting it with your trackball/touchpad/tapping the screen/etc. just like you'd select an icon on your home screen. Far easier than navigating to it, then moving your finger down to the Enter key. Also, if you're having a hard time finding the "Esc" key, it's the one with the arrow that looks like a "U" lying down on its side.)
