Handy Opera Extensions

The nice people over at Download Squad posted a sweet article about their favorite Opera extensions. From NoAds to StumbleUpon all your favorite extensions are there!

Even if you haven't tried the alpha yet, it's an interesting read about what extensions you can expect to see when Opera 11 reaches final. If on the other hand you are one of the alpha testers we would love to know your favorite extensions!

    Hey there,

Being one of those "Alpha Testers" , I can tell you right away the two Extensions that are already my favorite extensions. The First Place winner for me is the youtube video downloader. I use this extension, which palaces a download button on the youtube player, to save vids to my hard drive for later use.

My Second favorite is YR.no forecast. This nice little Extension can retrieve detailed weather real time weather information from anywhere in the world at the click of a mouse

I currently don't really have a favorite extension (although I do like PageTranslator), but I'm still hoping for something like treestyletabs (see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5890/ isn't available). Altough think it's not possible yet...

@sirnh1 Opera already has something similar built-in. Open panels, click on "+" and select "Windows". I know it not exactly the same, but it's still pretty useful.

I know, but treestyletabs does more then just that. Treestyletabs doesn't require multiple windows. For example when searching google I open 4 tabs in the background. Treestyle tabs will create the newly opened tabs as 'child-tabs' of the google tab inside that same window. Treestyletabs also works with more then 'only' 2 levels...

What they didn't write in the article is, that many of the Fx Extensions are not needed, because the functionality is built in.

I still use the userJS that does the same in my main Opera 11 install - as I do for some of the other extensions. On my pure geeky test install of Opera 11 I use extensions and have got several errors, when it comes to localStorage and scriptStorage, I think the Extension API still needs some polishing, especially the timing when it comes to events ...

Here's another list of top Opera extensions.

    http://techie-buzz.com/browsers/top-extensions-for-opera-11.html (Not written by me)

My favs are the QR Box, Translate, Translator, Security Enhancer and StumbleUpon.
The translate plugin is really sweet, but misfires a lot and needs more options.
I am also waiting for the last pass add-on to show up (its under dev.).

This one is actually a port of a popular userjs.Even users of older versions of Opera can get it.
    See: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/25105
    http://www.pallab.net/2010/04/26/one-script-to-rule-them-all-download-hd-youtube-videos-in-opera-firefox-chrome-safari-and-internet-explorer/

But obviously, extensions make things easier.

Page with extensions needs to be changed (quite difficult to browse all ex. ) especially later when there will be more of them

There's a good translation script on extendopera. (translates highlighted text into the address bar) I wonder if the new support for third-party trusted repositories will encourage them to also offer an extension database?

As per extensions in 11, both weather apps are nice. Application panels (like Wikipedia) still function better as Panelized bookmarks. The Fastesttube extension works very well. But having several extensions up has caused problems with a few websites, and I haven't been able to narrow down what's doing it.

Also, incorporating webp content-type support would be great.

  • VladimirSaturday, November 13, 2010 11:30:04 PM

Just downloaded it. Looks cool. Runs fast enough. And the ability to customize it is smthn I wanted for a long time now(not that there weren't enough built in features).:yes:

Oh, but user JS cache did scare me... Hope it goes away some time next release
  • PaulSunday, November 14, 2010 6:17:42 AM

    how i download it!!!!!!
  • Stephen TurrellMonday, November 15, 2010 3:05:36 PM

    Some great extensions available but
some are very simple YR.no forecast just links to the website, its a very good weather service but I can just bookmark it & call it up with a nickname. The same goes for opera:config
The Google Translate bookmarklet is available at
    http://translate.google.com/translate_buttons
The PageTranslator extension is preferred because it looks better.

One extension I'd love to have is Readability by
http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/ the bookmarklet used to work but is broken in Opera 11.

  • Dustin WilsonMonday, November 15, 2010 9:37:46 PM

My favorite user javascript was always my friend MTKnight's imagesizer. He's since made it into an extension called Make It So. Probably my favorite extension now.

Many of the extensions are better suited as either custom searches (like page translate) or Web panels, but it's nice to have choice.
