How close are you to other Opera users?

July 1, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Where in the world are you?

This is pretty cool; with the latest version of Opera you can enable and use a new feature called Geolocation. We've created a Live Map where you can try out this feature real-time. It's pretty cool to see Opera users from all over the world.

 Is there any way to share the identity? Nickname or something? Now I just see bunch of anonymous Opera users or am I missing something?

EDIT: But it is really cool to see how many of us is already using Opera 10.60

EDIT: Folks, do remember everyone does not share their location, so there really are more of us using the latest Opera browser

I guess I'm the only person in Texas sharing their location. http://files.myopera.com/L2D2/STUFF/Smilies//JC-LOL.gif - I don't see another red flag anywhere.

I'm lost 40km from where I am now. I'm using cables, it's because of the ISP I guess.

Yes, unfortunetly there is no way to automatically find more accurate placement of you using only IP address in such situation. Small "Ad": In such cases small geolocation provider http://unite.opera.com/application/701 can help

When I tried this the other day, it said I was in Turkey instead of South Africa. Today it doesn't want to say where it thinks I am. :p:.
I'm using a 3G modem which should allow fairly reasonable geolocation. Google Maps on my phone finds my location to within five kilometres!.

wao, awesome work done, I can see my location

It had more difficult to find me than to find Waldo! It says that I am in a totally different place, (more than 90 miles), it sounds like a good idea, but surely needs more polishing.

This is not a fault of Opera. Opera is using Google Database. It is based both on wifi data and on IP data. If you there are good wifi data, it is possibly very accurate. If there is no, Google ueses IP info, which can be very inprecise, but still at least be in the same country or state. This is becuase many ISP, register only in one city, but have clients in many others.
