How to make Opera Mini 5 the default Android browser with Opera Bridge

April 23, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

On androinica there's a tutorial how to make Opera Mini the default browser on Android phones. To get it to work, you need to download OperaBridge - an app that will grant Opera Mini 5 the necessary intents to be your device’s first choice for loading links.

Try it out for yourself:

  1. Download Opera Mini 5
  2. Download OperaBridge from the Android Market
  3. Click a web link on the phone and a window should come up saying “Complete action using”
  4. Select the “Use by default for this action” radio button
  5. Press OperaBridge
  6. PROFIT! I mean, SURF!

    Typo!

Anyway, why doesn't Opera provide this option out of the box?

OperaBridge wasn't available on my phone, my guess is that it's for Android 2.x or something. Anyway, the app with the clever name "Make Opera Default Browser" worked the same way!

Where can I find the Opera Bridge .APK file? I cannot find it on the Android Market. I have a Pulse.
  • Bart van de WeijerMonday, April 26, 2010 11:49:56 AM

Okay, I found the .apk file. But I get an error (in dutch) while installing: Operabridge cannot be installed on this telephone.
I have a T-mobile pulse with Android 1.5... Is this a problem for Opera Bridge?

    @ Bart van de Weijer:

Try "Make Opera Default Browser" instead.

And please tell me, if it works.

Regarding OperaBridge: You need to configure your phone so that you can install APK's which were not downloaded from the Market.

Couldn't find neither OperaBridge or "Make Opera the default browser" from the market (Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 mini on Android 1.6)...

Can anyone provide the APK files?

Mini 5.1 for Android includes the option to make it your default browser, with no third-party hacks.

Nice guide, I got myself a new smartphone yesterday and currently test the different functions. From all the browser Opera is still the best for mobile phones

Try default browser selector or something like that. Worked for me.
