Inside Opera Belarussian style

September 7, 2011 · by Aleksander Aas

Onliner.by is one of the largest digital lifestyle magazines in Belarus. With over 40% of Belarusians using Opera we welcomed the opportunity to show them around Opera HQ. The result is an amazing two part story that features more pictures and stories than I think we ever shared on Choose Opera.

Why where they here? Well Opera has an amazing 45% market share in Belarus. Largely because of our amazing Russian speaking community, they sure do love browsers in Belarus! If you want and read Russian, check out our Russian community on My Opera!

In part one we have our very own EspenAO. As well as pictures from all over the office.

The following part two features even more pictures from the offices and an interview with Opera CEO Lars Boilesen among others. IT also talks a little bit about the future of Opera for your TV.

Got any questions from the pictures? Let us know!

I wish Opera had 40% market share in Ghana . Anyway, market share was still gained last month, I hope it continues.

Nope. No news about development (from Haavard etc) - that's new Opera politics.

Actually the correct name of the country - BELARUS, and therefore the title must sound like Inside Opera Belarusian style

Belarus - once again - proves that the Opera browsers are a huge hit! I am very glad to see Opera growing, and seeing a bit of Opera's business inside closed doors was very interesting. I am truly a fan of the Opera Software brigade - and, I'm glad to be among the many satisfied users of their software. Recently, a survey was done over here in the States regarding browsers - their level of security, as well as speed. Mozilla Firefox was in first place - can you believe it? The browser that US radio host Kim Komando said to never use! When something crashes in their browser, a yellowish-white background arrives on the screen, with a sick-looking plug-in icon - and a message that reads: "Well... this is embarrassing... ". Opera did place in the top 5 of the browsers; alongside of Safari, and some newer repackaged upstarts like 'Netscape'. I was shocked, and appalled to see IE 9 rate higher than Opera, and I believe it was third place (!). Stay the way you are, Opera - innovative, and marching to the beat of your own drummer; while providing your users with a cutting-edge, tactile browser. As your company wrote about the Opera browser: "I'll shout it from the rooftops!"

I just tried the Dolphin browser for mobile... very nice, with similar features to Speed Dial, but, I am still partial to what I call my "Opera Twins" - Opera Mini, for when I'm stuck in a 2G/3G environment - like, in a grocery store (haha); or, Opera Mobile - for when I want a richer Internet experience in Wi-Fi, or, in 4G (4G is still in very limited areas here in the United States, but, when experienced - WOW). Opera still does it for me.

New? Opera has NEVER published roadmaps or anything like that. Nothing new here.

Funny that Haavard just dropped in the ES5.1 support announcement. And there are things you can always see by reading between the lines. For example since the new OperaTV SDK includes some WebGL support, they have probably gotten closer to Hardware Acceleration support for Opera Desktop on Linux. You need to be patient and pay attention because Opera will never be like Firefox. (And maybe that's a good thing)

Why do not you invest in open media (TV)? Brazil is a country with continental dimensions and a great market open to growth of the Opera. A few seconds of advertising would be very efficient. Appearing at sporting events like soccer and volleyball and also in social actions are much appreciated by people. The browser is great, but most people usually have a slight knowledge of computing. As a result always use the default browser that comes with OS.

Renato, have you looked at sports.opera.com ? They could certainly push the mobile presence even deeper with little effort. Solid desktop penetration is more difficult to achieve, would probably require advertising similar to what Firefox and Chrome have had.

Long story short, I was right.

But I am unsubscribing this topic because dialogs belong in testing feedback and the forums.
