Introducing the Opera Link API

October 14, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Opera Link

Opera Link has been around for some years now, but so far it has been available only in Opera products. That has finally changed! With the Opera Link API now available, you can now develop your own applications that can both read and write Opera Link data.

Good step. Services with API available are more useful and usually more popular.

I was looking at Link API yestarday.

    I see main features missing:
    - search and url filters items
    - date of modification / creation / last use of given item (i.e. bookmark)
    - no user defined item types (even additional metadata, or it is possible?)
    - generic mechanism to synchronize properly this items beetwen computers (especially if one of them was offline for extensive time).
  • Anton TsigularovFriday, October 15, 2010 2:05:46 PM

The dates of creation and last visited are there. Check carefully the API docs.

True - no user defined item types at this point.

I'm not sure what you mean by "generic mechanism to synchronize properly this items beetwen computers". The browsers are already handling this on their own.

If you need further details about something - feel free to start a thread in the Opera Link feedback forum, we're always willing to help

Yes, I know that, but what I'd like to see is an app that let you modify your synchronized data without using a browser and that also allows you to save/upload it in/from your computer!
I need a feature like that because at the moment you can't say to Link when reading or writing data, and this caused some problems to me in the past.

I lost you on the last sentence, but - wait a just a little bit more

My main excuse for using Opera on my netbook was that my bookmarks are synced with my cellphone. (Operamini). Now I'll have to choose another excuse. :p:.
Actually, this is a way forward towards open standards as I see it..
It's not full 'cloud' computing, which is too expensive and restrictive for those of us with limited and expensive ISP options. :left:. Yet it allows simple syncing of basic data..

    This is awesome :headbang:
Now everyone can use Opera sync. Waiting to see how the applications are developed.
