Making friends with Opera Mini
As I wrote about here, it's a great time to tell people about Opera Mini 4, and one group particularly eager to learn more about Opera Mini are cell phone salespeople (especially those competing against Apple and AT&T's iPhone).
I've been told that more and more people are asking phone salespeople how they can get the internet on their phones. That's where Opera comes in!
In my blog post linked above, I recommended that Opera fans should talk to phone salespeople and tell them about Opera Mini, especially the new Opera Mini 4 beta. In the last few days, I've done exactly that, and got great results!
In the first instance, I was at a shopping mall and spoke to a Sprint salesman working at a kiosk. It turns out he actually uses Opera on the desktop, but hadn't heard of Opera Mini, so when I showed him Opera Mini 4 beta running on my personal Sprint phone (a Samsung A900 flip-phone) he was very impressed by the zoom feature, the speed of the browser, the fact that it's free, and that it runs on any Java-enabled phone (including your typical non-smartphone). Excited by the demo, he said he would try Opera Mini on his own phone and let his customers know all about it.
Earlier today, during my lunch break, I went to a local Sprint store to buy a car charger for my phone. The manager came to help me out, and I asked him if he knew about Opera Mini. Amazingly, he didn't, but after I showed him a demo, he immediately asked where he could download Opera and then proceeded to install it on his phone and try it out himself. Needless to say, Opera Mini worked like a charm on his phone. Probably realizing that his customers would be interested in it as well (and purchase more data plans as a result), he was very grateful for the info and took $10 off the price of my car charger!
I can't guarantee that will happen to you, but I have a feeling there are a lot of phone salespeople out there you could talk to--who would be thrilled to learn more about the new Opera Mini beta.
People just love getting good news, and that's exactly what we have when it comes to Opera Mini. Let's work together to help everyone get the full Internet on their phones, which is something we'd all benefit from. As Web developers see that people are accessing their sites using mobile phones, they'll work harder to make sure those sites work correctly on all devices (by conforming to Web standards).
