Opera Mini Maps

deCarta just released an interesting product for Opera Mini users. Their new map service is optimized for Opera Mini users, and allows users to not only get access to maps, but they also have a pretty cool location based service that allows you to find museums and romantic restaurants while on the move. You can even read reviews and store your favorite locations!

The beta does have some limitations, while the map service is available worldwide their location based service is available to users in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, The United States, South Africa, Indonesia, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Nigeria, Ukraine, Russia and India.

To test the service go to mini.decarta.com with any phone running Opera Mini!

As this is the first launch of their new service, they are keen to get as much feedback as possible. What do you like, and what do you dislike about it? Is there anything they could do to make it the best service in the world? Think big and share your feedback in the comments!

    The service is very nice and it's awesome that it could be run on Opera Mini (some operators don't count its traffic), but Google Maps is still more useful.

    As commented on the Portal release notice, the only thing this really needs is a more granular "add location" system. (with location types)

    Once location-awareness comes in, I suppose this thing could also offer travel maps similar to a GPS. All depends what their backend is capable of, though it seems to be more for street maps and service discovery.

    *From India,
    Under Select Category Include
    * Hospital
    * Police Station
    * Longitude and Latitude.
    Location based service is very helpful. Use colour to show highland or plain.

    Greetings from deCarta! Thanks everyone for the kind words - in terms of country availability, we are working on a timeline for all the countries mentioned in this thread. We are starting the service with a subset of countries. As we get more feedback and more testing under our belts we will be adding the whole world. I will get back to the thread soon as to which countries are in the next round of adding map data.

    We have a draggable map interface as well (d.decarta.com) but, like google maps, it does not work in Opera Mini. This is the beginning of our effort to roll out a mapping interface optimized for the opera mini experience. The nice part is that, when you pay for your data plan by the amount downloaded, these maps will save you a lot of money.

    Thanks and please keep the feedback and questions coming!

    Between south and north america :wink: it is a beta i believe so it may not be supported yet.
    it would really have been a good idea if they had checked the smw for popular countrys for opera mini. I suppose they didnot otherwise they should have mentioned this. :smile: life is too short to worry about details. Still i do :wink:

  • Cutting SpoonTuesday, November 16, 2010 10:34:54 PM

    The greatest POTENTIAL strength of the decarta webapp, at this point is to provide a responsive "walking map" for people who didn't pay extra for GPS navigation on their phone. Very useful the way it zooms so far in.
