My Extensions. Let me show them to you.

May 13, 2011 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Extensions allow you to add excellent functionality to Opera easily (just browse our rich extensions catalog). Personally I prefer to have extensions doing useful stuff under the hood - not clustering up my UI, so here are my extensions:

Opera extensions

From top to bottom:

  • Icon for "Documents preview"Documents preview

Prompts for document preview when you click links pointing to either .DOC .PPT or .PDF files. Uses Google documents viewer.

  • IconYouTube Video Downloader

The extension adds a simple drop-down below the YouTube videos where you can easily select and download the video in the format of choice.

  • IconForce Speed Dial Logos

Replaces speed dial thumbnails with site logos for preconfigured and user configured sites.

  • IconGMail Checker

Displays the number of unread messages in your Google Mail inbox.

  • IconMake It So

A simple extension which sizes large images to fit in the window, either along one axis or both.

  • IconMy Opera Share

Share any site with your My Opera friends with a single click!

  • IconTurn Off the Lights

The entire page will be fading to dark, so you can watch the video as if you were in the cinema.

  • IconYouTube AdsFree

Removes annoying popup ads on YouTube videos.

What extensions do you use? Got any tips for me?

Calculator, Edit the Page, GMail Checker, Go to IMDB, Google Images Direct, Image Autosizer, Image Preview Popup, TinEye Search, Translator, YouTube Ads Free. I had more, but I had to remove the new Opera so I could install 11 beta (I don't like the new speed dial)

I only use 1 extension and that's Gcache (from: https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/gcache/ ) so I can access the Google cache of a page with a single click when the original page (or site) is offline (or way to slow for my taste)

    http://my.opera.com/thelunatics/blog/omust-have-extensions

I am using almost 40 extensions, that make me start to feel the large extension config window uncomfortable.
Also now I should think about the efficiencies. There are many similiar extensions comparing each others, and soon, the performance will be the most factor to choose one.

I think providing a professional UI - for example, checking memory usage and delay -would be an enhancer for extensions to get more popularity. :]

  • RenkeFriday, May 13, 2011 6:40:32 PM

    Hey,

in my opinion you can bette use a pinned tab with GMail + the lab that shows the number of new mails in the favicon instead of the GMail Cheker extension.

    Regards,
    Renke

Extensions make Opera more powerful :knight:

Suggestion :wait: for opera developers i would like to see extensions Panel for better organization.
  • IronFriday, May 13, 2011 7:25:02 PM

Most of the functions I use are already built in in the Opera browser, such as image blocking, mail client, notes, feed reader, and the advanced options in the download manager. But I do use four extensions because they're practical. I like downloading my favorite articles as PDF for reading later. I browse around web sites in languages I haven't mastered yet so I translate pieces of text without leaving the page. When I read search results I open in background the ones I want to view so that they load while I keep searching. And sometimes I download videos through the fastest tube to watch later.

https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/easy-translation/1.1.1/?display=en featured in favbrowser, uses google web translator, just a button so doestn interfere

https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/open-in-background-with-long-press/1.0.2/?display=en hold mouse1 to open on background, ultrauseful on laptops

that would be it so far.. opera doesnt need to much more
