Opera for Android

If knowledge is power, as the saying goes, then Opera Mini and Opera Mobile are now omnipotent when it comes to saving data. Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 have today been released for Android devices, and have an exciting new feature which allows you to know exactly how much data you save whilst using them.

With much more importance being placed on data plans today, knowing just how much data your phone is using can be key to saving money. Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 now both boast a dedicated page, that keeps count your savings. Concerned about roaming data? Never fear, as Opera Mini and Opera Mobile now make excess charges the least of your worries when abroad! Not only can you access the total amount of data saved, you can specify a time period to monitor!

To get these savings, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile use cloud-assisted browsing, which reduces the size of webpages by up to 90%. It means you get a faster, cheaper, and better web experience… all for free! In a delicious quote, Lars Boilesen, Opera CEO states that “If the really slow network you are on is butter, Opera Mini is a hot knife”. It really is true, and Opera Mini has often come to my rescue, greasing the gears when the network grinds to a halt.

Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 have a few more tricks up their sleeves. Better integration with Android, with new features such as bookmark importing and direct shortcuts. Opera Mobile also gets inline video for Honeycomb, an updated Presto rendering engine, better network performance, more HTML5 support, and less memory usage.

If you haven't tried Opera Mini or Opera Mobile yet, hopefully you’ve now run out of excuses. Get Opera Mini 6.5 and Opera Mobile 11.5 now, for free, in the Android Market or at m.opera.com. Try out the new features, and let us know what you think!

So, will these Symbian users get an update in the coming weeks or will have to wait for the astonishingly mindblowing Opera Mobile 12 and Opera Mini 7?
  • Nikolas HonnefTuesday, October 11, 2011 3:16:13 PM

The only update I need is having all my speeddial items in Opera Mobile, not just 9. I don't know who made that decision, but its frustrating as hell.

With less than 1% marketshare... Who cares... You were the one stupid enough to buy a phone with no apps, no users and no developers.

    1. It's something like 2.5%
    2. Opera itself (on the desktop) has LESS marketshare, and still I use it and expect websites to support it
    3. There are ~40.000 apps and fewer of them are shit as on Android/iOS
    4. There are more than 30.000 devlopers

So in the end: Who cares about YOU? You are just 1/7.000.000.000 of the human race...

The real reason why there is no Opera Mini for WP7 is that they probably don't have any operator deals for these handset. I'm still confident that maybe next year they will port at least the Mini version...

I do not aggre with you.
I have 2 android phone and I looking change for a WM7. Look good, with the service I need, a better interface and compatible with apps for my little bussine.
If you do not like WM7 do not means nobody doesn't use.

I guess the main problem is Opera Mini is written in C++ but Windows Phone 7 supports only Silverlight or XNA, porting Opera to C# is not an easy task :awww:

In Microsoft's mini sample of the people around Redmond.. In the REAL world, it's less than 1%

You bought a mobile made by Microsoft and want to install a non-Microsoft browser on it? Good luck with that.... Are people stupid? Didn't iPhones/iTunes/Apple lock-down teach them ANYTHING?????
  • Tiago Joao SilvaTuesday, October 11, 2011 4:00:03 PM

    Regarding WP7 and Opera:

Just like Apple, the only authorized browser engine on WP7 is IE. You can skin IE, wrap around IE, but the core engine always has to be IE. Maybe Opera Mini can get through like it did with Apple, but even then it's touch-and-go.

Opera wasn't ported to Dalvik for Android, it's using C++ code with Android's "Native SDK". Does WP7 support a "Native SDK" equivalent to support C++ code *for 3rd party developers* (I'm sure IE/WP7 is not Silverlight or XNA)? I don't think so.

Do you regard the Opera Desktop browser dead in the water because of its small market share ?

    Hey,
are they some news about adding bookmark api for extensions?
I really like Opera, but i not using it only because there are no Xmarks extension.
From Xmarks they said that still from more than 10 months they waiting when Opera will add bookmark api for extensions.
Other browsers like Firefox and Chrome have such things but Opera not - why?

And what do you get in return? Maybe better support from Google services for your browsers? If not, why else do you prefer their mobile OS that much, that it becomes more and more Opera's mobile lead platform?
  • dcarrithWednesday, October 12, 2011 4:34:52 PM

Maybe because that's where all the users are?

What about Symbian? Will be soon released?
  • pnikolskySaturday, October 15, 2011 7:16:11 AM

Hi, I'm enjoying the Opera Mobile browser for a last few months on my Asus Transformer, but I noticed that after the last update Opera started to freeze for a second o two every time when I switch between tabs (it takes this time to show a tab after it was chosen) or close a tab.

    Can this be fixed please?
    Thanks.

Where I can find previous version of Opera Mobile (11.00) for Android?
This version lacks smooth scrolling (the movement of the page is delayed) on my device and I want to downgrade.
It is really annoying considering previous version has been working properly.
And yes, I've filled a bug report.
