Opera 12.02: Secure all of the things!

August 30, 2012 · by Aleksander Aas

Opera 12.02 has just been released to address some important security issues. In that regard we would like to give you a tip regarding a new Java vulnerability that was announced. It only affects Java 7;Java 6 or older is not affected.

What's the best way to handle this for yourself in Opera? One solution is to activate the click-to-play for all plug-ins. From the main Opera menu, go to Settings -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Content, and click on Enable plug-ins. (See below.) This will also disable Flash, meaning you won't be able to watch videos, but on the other hand this should keep you safe until the Java problem is fixed.

Update: Sun has now updated Java 7, you should update as soon as possible!

Click to activate plugins

Now, let's get those downloads going! Free, fast and available right here!

    Thanks for the advice

EDIT: Except I guess the idea was either to disable them or enable only on demand :left:
  • bizkidThursday, August 30, 2012 8:22:50 AM

The secure pages are still shown as not secured. This version was supposed to fix this..
  • Sami SerolaThursday, August 30, 2012 8:48:51 AM

Is that really the only way to disable just Java?

If I disable all plug-ins including flash, then I no longer can not use numerous Google services.

I also tried the option 'Enable plug-ins only on demand' but it does not work on Opera 12.01 for Windows XP. If I try to click on embedded flash, it just wont start.

@Aleksander "and click on Enable plug-ins. (See below.)" So, did you mind "Enable plug-ins" or "Enable plug-ins only on demand"?

@Sami There is also opera:plugins page.

Disabling Java in opera:plugins might be better idea

I have unistalled Java years ago and since then I never needed it. I don't see the point in keeping it disabled instead of uninstalling.
  • metudeThursday, August 30, 2012 10:50:24 AM

This is another reason why i hate java on web pages.
  • Kr0pr0XThursday, August 30, 2012 1:00:05 PM

im using JAVA v6 update 10 [build 1.6.0_10-b33] so, i guess im not affected!!!
btw, already downloaded new Opera v12.02!!! [x32 & x64]
  • rseilerThursday, August 30, 2012 2:37:15 PM

Yes, Opera:Plugins is a better idea, but too bad Opera doesn't have the Safari feature where (I've heard) that it can ask permission PER plugin. So you can have the browser ask permission to run Java in the (rare) cases when it's actually called for but you won't be pestered constantly about much more common content like Flash.

@Kr0pr0X, uh, you're right that v6 doesn't have the issue, but in running a version from, what, 2009(!?), you have hundreds of other issues. Update to the latest v6, which is Update 34. It's incredible that you're on such an old version. That Java updater is even better than I thought!

You wont be able to watch videos on prehistoric sites that doesnt allow the new html5 video support on opera

He was actually correct: the update for JRE 6 is for an unrelated issue. The bigger problem is that he's a couple dozen versions behind.

I'm using Opera in "plugins on demand" by default. It really keeps the browsing cleaner and faster (it kind of acts like an ad blocker, as most plugin use comes from Flash banners) and the one extra click to enable flash videos every now and then isn't really much of a trouble. If only the "plugin content" icon was a bit more elegant…

Opera 12.02 works well. I think we've to download Java separately & use the Java script folder.
  • Rafael LuikSaturday, September 1, 2012 6:51:22 PM

YUNO show people the easier way??

    F12 -> Uncheck "Enable plug-ins".
Or go to the page opera:plugins and disable "Java(TM) Platform SE..." only...

I had been using Opera since Opera 9 and truly enjoying it; but now I encounter a major problem. I cannot go to the website of my university grade book from my home. The website is www-cms.ncwise.org. This requires java plugins and Opera 12.02 cannot find. The plugin is oracle jinitiator 1.1.8.2 What can I do.

Can anyone tell how I can download oracle jinitiator 1.1.8.2? from which website? After downloading how can Opera recognize? Where should I save the plugin?
  • phobaMonday, September 3, 2012 12:14:34 PM

Well, 12.02 still haven't fixed the problem of https pages. These are still connectes in standard, not secured http connection. A big, really big negligence of developers because one of the Opera's famous features was its security. It's gone now, and even worse, its' not fixed. So I should use Opera for general browsing and for banking and all other https connections to use other browser?? Don't make me laugh please.
  • K. Ramesh Ph.DMonday, September 3, 2012 3:14:19 PM

I thought by upgrading things will get better. Opera 11 was good enough and I was able to use for websites https:// but Opera 12.02 it does not work. I want to ask the Opera management what is it you are getting by upgrading to Opera 12.02 and losing many customers?
  • K. Ramesh Ph.DMonday, September 3, 2012 5:02:23 PM

    Hello Ishq40:

I want to download oracle jinitiator 1.1.8.2 and then where is the Java script folder? Could you walk me through how I can save it in the Java folder? Thank you Ishq40

Correction: Oracle now owns Java not SUN. So the line above the image should read "Oracle has now updated Java 7"
  • cibernyTuesday, September 4, 2012 4:10:07 PM
