Opera in the Mac App store

Opera finally got approved for Mac users through the App Store. With an easy way to get your favorite browser, all we need now is a few good ratings.

To rate Opera in the Mac App Store, you need to download Opera* first. Once that's done we hope you go for five stars! Really want to show how much you love Opera? Drop a few lines in the form of a review.

* You must be at least 17 years old to download Opera through the App Store. It's not our fault the Web is crawling with nasty sites.

"You must be at least 17 years old to download this app.
    Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes"

    That's... interesting.

Very, I wonder if Safari gets the same restriction?

Actually it's Apple's fault to apply this idiot rule. Macs can be bought by people at any age and they don't show a message like this for the consumers, they just accept any money.

Awesome, you just got 5 stars!
Btw, you are the first Browser within the App Store, right?

    Great !!! Congrats !!!

Now all I need is a Mac to install Opera on it, so I can have one of each platforms (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, OS X).

if i already have an Opera and I want to continue with Mac Store updates, will Opera from Mac Store reinstall my current version or will install as separate version?

Reinstall. You need to restart Opera during the installation. In my case it restarted fine with all my tabs open

Ask Microsoft. They came up with the ballot screen idea.

I don't get it. This is for desktop computers that run MacOS right? Why would I need to go to the "App Store"? Can't I just download the installer from opera.com and install Opera just like I did with any piece of software since the dawn of time?

You can. This is just another trusted venue for software distribution on Macs.

I can't rate because I didn't install Opera via the App Store. Strange.
  • DenisThursday, March 3, 2011 5:04:43 PM

@Pim then drag your current Opera into the trash and reinstall (bookmarks etc. will not be deleted).

This is great news, I've just reinstalled Opera through the App Store! However, what I found strange is that I am still able to use the "Check for updates" entry in the menu. I thought Apple was forcing developers to remove custom update mechanisms in favor of the integrated App Store update solution. Can anyone with better insight enlighten me? :right:

PS: I rated it five stars. I know I'm biased
  • DenisFriday, March 4, 2011 12:05:18 PM

@Aron: If there's an "Check for Updates" then it's most likely not from the App Store (got it myself from there and there's no update-function).
  • Áron VirginásSaturday, March 5, 2011 8:17:06 AM

@Denis: It's strange because I moved the original application bundle to Trash and reinstalled it through the App Store. I have it under Purchases and status is "installed". I will try to reinstall it to make sure. I hope there will be no delay in updates through the App Store. Opera is one of the few softwares I wish to be able to update on the first day a new stable version is out.

There is only version 11.01 available via the Mac App Store, although version 11.10 is available for download via the Opera website. (Release date: April 12, 2011)

Can you say sth. about your update politics / the update mechanisms? Why is the update not available via the Mac App Store?

I think the Mac App Store version should be updated at the same time, as a new version usually also fixes security issues.

Because it requires approval, and Apple is known for taking its time when approving things?
  • Áron VirginásTuesday, April 19, 2011 2:39:16 PM

@Christian Heindel: The delay is most likely due to Apple's bureaucratic approval process. I just downloaded the 11.10 update from opera.com
