Opera Barracuda!

February 15, 2011 · by Aleksander Aas

Barracuda

All upcoming versions of Opera will all have exciting code names. The next big release will be "Barracuda" formerly known as Opera 11.10. From what we know about Barracuda, it will take at least one of your favorite Opera features higher than 11! :headbang:

While contemplating on what feature you think this is, please enjoy some music to set the mood just right.

Snapshots of Barracuda will be available soon from the Desktop Team.

It's still Opera. This is just a code name.

Excuse me, but what exactly is so exciting about "barracuda" buzzword?

It the code name for a new Opera version, not a buzzword. If you don't think new Opera versions are exciting, you obviously won't find news about them exciting either.

    To each their own.

    Yum.

    I don't like the name.

First, it's massively reminiscent of the Seagate Barracuda HDD series. The name has become popular in the IT-community as a hardware brand. There must be other "cute" names that are not already in use. There are a lot of fish in the sea, aren't there?

Second, it does sound childish. I mean, all those brutal, aggressive, testosterone-oozing names like "barracuda", "shark", "piranha", "jaguar", "mustang" only sound cool if you're a 14-yr-old, desperate to prove your masculinity.

Third, in my view, Opera's image is all about elegance, "artsy" things, style and taste. Why not name Opera versions after famous operas, for example, or opera singers, or opera characters? Like Carmen, Valkyrie, Aida. :sing:

Whats with "Tiger" or "Snow Leopard"?

Good thing it's just a codename then. The actual name is still "Opera".

You are over-analyzing this. It's a codename. It's not going to be the end of the world. Chill out!

Maybe a boost to opera turbo - compression of html5 videos or
    an improved carakan js engine.

Carakan has been constantly improved since the first release. How do you think they managed to speed up 10.6 and 11 even more?

Compress HTML5 video? Do you have any idea how expensive that is?
  • Kelisha G FerdinandsThursday, February 17, 2011 3:58:14 PM

Yous are all Winges cos for starters "Barracuda" is a great name as it has a real edge 2 it & it just rolls of the Tongue so theres nothing Childish about that, But if Opera was tocall it "Nappy" or "Fairy" then you could cal them Childish. :scared: :bomb: :drunk: :jester:

People certainly are overly and very negatively opinionated about something that they get the pleasure of using for free.

If you can do it better yourself, shuddup and go do it.

My opinion of Opera is the highest possible. It's the best browser I've ever used. And I will surely download 11.10 and try it out, whatever it is called.
