Opera first browser available in Apple's Mac App Store

March 3, 2011 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Over 17? Download Opera.

This press release went live this morning:

This week, the Opera web browser became the first non-native browser made available in Apple's Mac App Store, but only for those over seventeen years of age. Jan Standal, VP of Desktop Products for Opera Software, is surprised.

"I'm very concerned," says Standal. "Seventeen is very young, and I am not sure if, at that age, people are ready to use such an application. It's very fast, you know, and it has a lot of features. I think the download requirement should be at least 18."

For those under 17, there is a workaround. Just visit http://www.opera.com/ and download it. We do not ask for your age or your credit card number. Please, get your parents' permission before using this browser.

Could be an explanation in this post:

·I know there is a difference between Safari and Opera, Safari uses the built-in parental controls in Mac OS X ... while it appears that Opera does not. So your 9 year-old son could get into websites with Opera that are restricted to Safari...

Opera's currently 21-st in the top free apps selection. Not bad, but there's room for improvement

Now, Heatseek should be the over-18 browser. Not a very good one, but certainly designed for a single purpose.

If Opera was for over 17 year olds we'd probably be stuck with IE or Safari since they've got parental controls. Or do the Apple employees do something else in their free time?
