Opera Mini domination

Our friends over at FavBrowser just posted an interesting use of statistics showing market share for Mobile Browsers. As you can see there is no doubt about the dominance of Opera Mini.

Kinda looks like Risk doesn't it? Maybe the upcoming release of Opera Mini will be like delivering a cannon, horse and a solider?

Why do people always compare opera mini to full blown browsers?

Internet Explorer for Mobiles does not dominate anywhere, which is good news for the openness of web standards - which in turn is good for Opera as openness is one of its core principles.

Mostly commonly used in growing markets throughout the world. Hoping the firmware deals on feature phones will continue to multiply this....

So how many phones actually use mobile browsers? And which one? I'd guess that Android- and iPhone-Browsers are still ahead in total. Although India prefers Opera and has a population that is like 5 times as much as in the USA, it still might be way less compared to Android or iPhone. The countries with lots of (smart)phones around do not use Opera.

A browser which literally opens the web, and gives web access to people who would never be able to access it otherwise. It allows them to participate in the most important technological advancement in modern history.

Is there a previous graph to compare against?
    i.e.
to see how much the red is expanding

The browser on almost any phone is a "mobile" browser. There were a few exceptions that used the full Linux version of Firefox, but every last one died on the shelf...

Please to understand that Statcounter is not especially accurate outside of North America and Western Europe, so the global numbers are not accurate. Even so, Opera's Mobile and Mini are roughly equal to the total of all iOS devices (add together the iPhone and iPod numbers), while Android continues to grow and Blackberry continues to fall.

Opera Mobile/Opera Tablet will help a lot on that front, but it is difficult to develop a full browser that works on most Android devices.

Additionally, most of the red countries on that graph are still growing markets, and in 2011 Opera Mini should expand dramatically because more new phones are using it as the default browser. Vodafone is the first company to use a new feature of Opera Mini: Mini Widgets, which are a content and productivity platform that attaches to the proxied browsing platform. Not the same as Android/iPhone apps, but much more practical in markets where the phone itself only costs about $5-$10 USD....

I have been using Nokia phones for a long time and I use Opera browser 99% of the time. So for me Opera is the default browser on my phones. I think any sane Nokia user prefers Opera browser over the default browser. :p:
  • sorinSaturday, March 5, 2011 6:19:08 PM

US has a very slow network...it would be useful for them a faster browser like Opera
  • RichardSunday, March 6, 2011 9:11:04 AM

In many developing countries, a mobile phone is the ONLY access to the Internet for many people, whereas in the "west" (I live as far east as you can go!) mobile is still ancillary to our larger computers. Also, telcos are charging what they can get away with in each market. I was in India a year ago and the costs of SMS and mobile data were 1/10000 of what I get gouged for. So while mobile web is a "use as little as absolutely necessary" experience for me, many people in Asia are using it very extensively.

But how many android users in USA have downloaded Opera Mini on their devices? If this question has been answered, I apologize for repeating.
  • KYrenSunday, March 6, 2011 4:16:36 PM

I'd like to rephrase. I'd say that any sane person who wants to access the internet on his phone would prefer Opera browser.

Both Verizon and AT&T will apparently be using Opera Mini on most of their new feature phones....in the USA of course. This could have a definite impact.

OK, Opera-Mini is the global conqueror.
    Congratulations to the staff.

But, I see enemy troop in territory of the Opera headquarters.
What do we do with that?

(In "Capital" Risk, it can be the end of the game)

In addition many people are able to connect to Internet from their home PCs by buying a data pack and using their phones as modems. In the places where this is legal, of course - I was told that in some countries companies block this type of access so that users do it with the built in browser, that is WAP access only  This is where Opera Mini comes to the rescue :knight: Anyway, using my mobile as a modem has helped me a lot. Imagine: in any local Internet café, $9 means about three hours of use; by buying a data pack, however, I get 2,09GB for 48 hours for the same price  (There's also a 7 day pack) This way I can access the Internet from anywhere and if there isn't a computer nearby (most of the time in my case) I can always use Opera Mini (=Internet for everyone).

    You are completely wrong.

Opera has more than 100 million users on mobile phones, and is well ahead of the iPhone and Android.

So Opera has more browser users than iPhone and Android.

And smartphones? Why are you artificially limiting it to smartphones?
