Opera rocks Sputnik

March 15, 2010 · by Aleksander Aas

Sputnik is a JavaScript 3 conformance test tool released by Google to test different browsers. In particular the ECMA-262 spec. In simpler terms it's about 5000 JavaScript tests producing a cool curling SVG with the best browser closest to the center. We think it must have something to do with the pants.

It can't be a coincidence that the best looking browser and curling team hails from Norway.

    From wikipedia

To explain the joke for those who didn't get it. The pants on the picture are from the Norwegian national team in the Olympics in Vancouver. They got a lot of feedback due to the colors and pattern on them  eventually they got silver.

Opera on the other hand if the score from Sparta is correct would win!

Yeah I was wondering about that. Seems Carakan came just in time for the updates to Sputnik. Memory use is also dramatically lower than when I first tried it.

Any hint whether Opera will be releasing another MAMA report?

Tested Safari 4.0.5 this morning and it froze :sherlock:

...and did you reopen, load last seesion, continue the test? POS may crash, but sputnik will then skip the crashers and continue.
  • Charles SchlossMonday, March 15, 2010 5:56:12 PM

Just stated again it froze at 71%

    Total: 5246
    Succeeded: 5083
    Failed: 163

Did the test again and it did not freeze.

Opera does the best by far http://sputnik.googlelabs.com/compare

Yep. OperaDrBruce's link also shocked me: http://clients.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/results.action?key=38gY

Are they aiming for first in speed AND completeness? And if Sunspider number continue to shine, how does even V8 look right now?

    What about
    http://samples.msdn.microsoft.com/ietestcenter/

Are these tests really created along the W3C standards?
Because how can the IE pass all those tests while only getting 55/100 in Acid3?

It optimized itself for htese tests. Overall, the new IE engine is very nice. Not as good as Presto or Webkit, but a bit better than Gecko (not just judging by the Acid3 score).
  • Cutting SpoonWednesday, March 17, 2010 4:03:37 PM

Yeah I saw that, Daniel. IE9 passes 100% of the "tests publicly submitted by Microsoft". Though actually Opera does fine on the most important of those tests.
