Popular sites are... popular
Services such as Facebook, vKontakte and Twitter is on the rise according to our latest State of the Mobile Web report. Here are the highlights:
- Facebook is the biggest social network, followed by Vkontakte and other sites like Orkut and Twitter.
- 7 of 10 users in the Phillipines and Indonesia are on Facebook. In Ukraine, 7 out of 10 users rock Vkontakte.
- In 12 of the top 20 countries, social media sites are visited by over 50% of the users.
- Facebook account for more than half of all page views in South Africa, Indonesia, Kenya, Bangladesh, Turkey, Mexico, and the Philippines.
- Usage and page views are not the same. In Russia, for example, Vkontakte is used by 47.1% of mobile users but it's only 15.5% of all page views.
- China was difficult to examine because many of China’s popular portal sites contain social networking components. Renren is Facebook in China, although only 4.2% of Chinese mobile users accessed Renren in April, Renren was at the top of the list of sites in China in terms of page views. This seems to indicate that there is a very large Long Tail of sites in China that receive a lot of page views.
- Facebook is extremely popular in Indonesia, 77% of all Indonesian Opera Mini users visited Facebook in April!
