Security and stability update for Opera Desktop

February 1, 2013 · by Aleksander Aas

Our first desktop upgrade of 2013, the appropriately named Opera 12.13 is an important security and stability update. There are some major fixes in this version. For one thing, that pesky internal communication error on Facebook is now fixed. It should also now be possible once again to start Opera offline and then go online without any hiccups.

This update is available through auto-update, but if you want it straight from our servers, download Opera 12.13 with security and stability updates!

Since 12.13 had some major issues with crashes we recommend downloading Opera 12.12 here!

    You're kidding, right?
It's definitely better because of the fixed extension data loss and the offline-issues, but you know that it's crashing for most of us all over the place... :bomb:

... and I thought it would appropriately be named Opera 13.01 ...

crash on autoupdate/update if more than one widget is installed
  • D1sasterp1eceFriday, February 1, 2013 5:31:11 PM

I don't know about security, but I wouldn't call this stability - for me, Opera crashes the moment it's launched.

im still gonna give it a try!!! xD

I upgraded Opera to 12.13 version, and it was doing fine till 30 minutes later it started to crash unceasingly. You need to fix this as soon as possible, Opera Crew.

    Best regards!

After updating Opera kept crashing on startup. Opera downloaded the update, (re)started and installed the update, when starting again opera crashed (it send an error log), restarted opera crashed again (send another error report), restarted without extensions (and session)... crashed again (send another report).

Removed my opera profile, started opera again and it seems to work again, although it did crash once more after using it for some time and it said something along the lines of "failed to create an error log" :/
(This is on my Windows 7 64-bit computer, haven't tried my xubuntu-distro yet)

i don't know how to do it. maybe next time when i get my tab.

Someone gave a hint that deleting the 'widgets' folder could make the crashes go away (for a while at least). That's not a real solution, but it's a workaround at least. Let's wait for an official fix on Opera Software's behalf...

P.S. Moving/renaming/deleting 'widgets' will remove your extensions.

Stable...? Who decided to publish that buggy version where when I have addons (widget folder) the Opera crashes?

Wouldn't a clean reinstallation help those users which complains over constant crashes? :left:

I've seen in my time when you update an application many times after its original installation, it tends to have some problems the older it gets and the more often it updates, and not just with Opera.

Remember to backup your profile before attempting the above! :scared:

Reinstalen Opera en limpio a ver si eso permite que se acaben los problemas.
¡Recuerden respaldar el perfil de usuario primero!

NOw I have done clean install, and problem continues. I'll report it on that forum thread in more details.
  • ragganMonday, February 4, 2013 12:21:57 PM

Clean re-installation is not working at all. Maybe it would if I would delete all Opera data, but I obviously don't want to do this...

Should we expect new release soon?

Slight update. Please either go for our latest 12.14 snapshot or back to Opera 12.12. The later is available from Opera.com now and 12.14 is available from the Desktop Team.

Crashing not the only problem (solved for me by renaming the profile), but there is also the new obscurity of the menu system, needed to find settings etc. Without that, it seriously messes up the display of some sites including the appearance menu - now unusable - and I have not yet found the menu to switch from author to user display.

12.13 was a security update and advised. Going back looks bad in that context.
  • QuHnoTuesday, February 5, 2013 1:14:50 PM

None of the security holes seemed to be *too* critical, mind, I never said that they could not be exploited but the risk can be drastically minimized with a little bit of caution. Going back to make it at least usable for the users that experienced the crash loops was not the worst idea - especially in the light of the upcoming 12.14, which will be out as final soon and fix the issues again ...
