Take Notes with Opera

June 26, 2012 · by Anna Rohleder

Who doesn't like a good internet research project?

As fun as doing searches is, however, that's only the beginning. The next step is to collect and organize all the good stuff you've found. So whether you're looking something up online for a class or simply to satisfy your own curiosity, using the Notes function in Opera can help turn your search results into useful information.

Here's a quick guide to help you get started!

  • You can either select Notes from the main Opera menu, or from the panel that shows the note as a square of paper with the corner folded over.
  • To write your own note, click on Add, and just start typing. (Instant to-do list!)
  • To save information from a webpage, highlight the text, right-click and select Copy to note. If the text you're copying is from a well-known site, it will be saved along with an icon of the website's logo to help you remember where it came from.
  • You can also combine text from websites with your own thoughts into individual notes about different subjects. That's the beauty of Notes in Opera!
  • When you're done with a Note, you can send the entire note by email or even just one part of it by right-clicking and selecting Send by Mail. Alternately, you can right-click the edit field and select Insert note to paste the highlighted text into a status update, email message, or chat window.
  • Take your notes with you! If you use Opera Link, you can store the information you need right inside Opera. So for example, you can do a search on a regular computer and save the results in a note that you store inside the browser. Once you synchronize your notes with Opera Link, you can look them up later from your phone or tablet.

That's it - quick and easy!

What kinds of things would you like to use Notes to do?

Opera Notes is one of the best features. It is pretty simple, yet very powerful. Too bad that they are not accessible right from Opera Mobile or Opera Mini built-in as they are in the desktop browser.

Opera Notes + rich text support + inline images == Microsoft OneNote competitor without the audio and video features == lightweight, perfect solution.

However, with Opera Notes not supporting rich text and in-line images, I have to use OneNote.

HTML notes + notes in Opera Mini/Mobile - that's what we need!
  • JakubTuesday, June 26, 2012 3:06:44 PM

    Yes...notes in Opera mini/mobile...

create your note & allow Link time to sync (and confirm that Notes is ticked in Link's Synchronisation Options), then login to your my.opera account from your mobile (of course using Opera Mobile 12! :yikes:) and view your Notes from your account - can be found under two page menus [username] - Bookmarks and Opera - Opera Link. very handy Opera feature

you do via https://link.opera.com or from your my opera page, choosing Opera > Opera Link.

    • Double-click a note to open the web page it was saved from. This is really useful!
    • When you're on a page that has a note saved, you can see the note icon in the address field.

Yes, I use this method for access, but Notes can be added in Opera Mobile for example with direct access from "O"menu > "Notes" + synchronization to my account, also possibility to easily create you web Notes from your mobile too (touch - select - copy to note like in Desktop version) ... so keep the good work and keep improve it Opera

I've been using Opera Notes since it was first introduced

Awesome little feature, saved my life many times

My notes-list is getting huge. I'm in need of a better way of organising it. Also, when making a note I have no control over where it lands in the notes list which means it get's mis-filed every time giving me even more work to sort stuff out.

So a sub-menu to the copy-to-note option putting it at a specific spot in the notes-tree would help.

Opera should improve notes feature. Evernote, Microsoft OneNote are competitive products.
  • lchiangWednesday, June 27, 2012 8:00:52 AM

I hope it support rich text.

there is a "search" though. for simple and immediate non-lasting text, use Clipper extension

Opera notes is great for simple notetaking. Being able to share them is great.

For more intensive research though; it's not good enough. Integration with OneNote and/or Zotero support would be brilliant. Zotero aren't interested in do anything though, unless someone from Opera approaches them.

You could always make a competitor and have it built in. I'm sure lots of academics would switch browsers just for a good free referencing tool, especially in a browser.

But that still leaves me with the extra work of having to open the notes panel and drag notes into the correct folder to organize them.

The Notes feature is the perfect example of how a simple feature, when well implemented, can be extremely useful. I use Notes all the time.
  • xpghostedThursday, June 28, 2012 4:33:53 AM

I'm using it to store image macros, such as the one below and they are ready for instant inclusion to whatever comment box I have right-clicked.

 http://i.imgur.com/Vb4g4.gif for great little features such as Notes

Please please please  create a standalone notes client for mobiles. Accessing notes from a website on my browser is no good.

I am ok without rich text. I want my notes to be light and easily accessible offline on my mobile. I know you are mostly a browser company but this should be easy for you to make and would unleash the true power of notes given how much we use our mobile devices now a days.
  • LukášThursday, June 28, 2012 7:31:07 AM

maybe an option to set a reminder to notes ?
  • JimThursday, June 28, 2012 1:34:55 PM

We need to be able to paste notes into the URL or Search bar.

"or even just one part of it by right-clicking and selecting Send by Mail. Alternately, you can right-click the edit field and select Insert note to paste the highlighted text into a status update, email message, or chat window." I can`t do it.

"Opera Link, you can look them up later from your phone or tablet" No with my Opera Mobile on my HTC 4g.
