The Data Challenge Continues!

April 2, 2012 · by Anna Rohleder

Hey everybody, thanks for offering to help us out with our data problem!

The response was tremendous: nearly 1750 people volunteered to take some of that pesky potentio-kinetic data off our hands. Of those, 63 people cracked the binary code. But there was also a second coded message, and only 22 of you dedicated people have managed to decipher that so far.

Want to try your luck? The contest is still on, until 3 pm Central European time tomorrow, April 3 is now closed*. I've put the code in the comments below. If you manage to decipher this message, follow the instructions it contains to report your results. Good luck!

*Winners will be announced shortly

You don't have to post it here - just follow the instructions. But if you don't have Twitter, you can send me a private message.

Note: NO software required. Just the right website. I've cracked it on the first day, with some help. Opera, did I made it? And the answer (decoded answer) is in plain human readable text that does with the words: Congratulations.
  • Thu WinMonday, April 2, 2012 7:11:13 PM

Is there a third challenge as hinted by the second code? I've pmed you the answer to both quest challenge. Did you get it? Do you get an extra chance by cracking the second challenge?

And Tamil did you manage to solve it with or without my help?
  • Thu WinMonday, April 2, 2012 7:17:32 PM

Also, bad challenge as it can simply be solved without cracking the code or doing anything.

Dang... Came to the bzipped string and cant figure out how to decompress it. All the python examples show how to compress a string and then decompress it. But how to decompress some raw data? Need more clues!

Hint: use wobzip.org to convert file.
  • Patkós CsabaTuesday, April 3, 2012 9:15:08 AM

Thu Win I tried, it does not return any file. I took the bzipped code, pasted into textedit, saved as x.bz, uploaded to wobzip... maybe macos automagically removes some characters/encoding?

You need only a part of the code, not the entire binary. Try .bzip2.
