The World's Fastest Stable Browser

July 5, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

DailyTech

This is a headline we like to see! DailyTech puts Opera 10.60 to the test and they are impressed with the results.

We've been pushing our speed message (world's fastest browser) with the Opera 10 series and it's good to see journalists picking it up. For many, broadband is limited to fairly low speeds (320 kbps+), and that's where our Opera Turbo technology can really boost up your browsing speed! Does anyone of you use Opera Turbo?

The discussion following the DailyTech article is interesting as you can read how people from all over the world discuss how important browser speed really is.

I almost never use Turbo, since my connection is usually more than enough to handle the traffic.
Though it was useful to me on some low bandwidth wlan connections once or twice.

I'm experiencing a lot of performance issues with 10.60. 10.54 was better. New one may rock syntetic tests, but fails real life. Reports are already sent.

Opera may well be the worlds fastest browser. But that is not the best thing about Opera. Everyone is like "Speed is the only thing it has..." Obviously only people who haven't tried it say this but it's kind of the only thing Opera advertises itself for.

Opera should be advertised for other things like the awesome mouse gestures, it's high customizability, etc... Not just speed. Back in the days before Carakan, Opera wasn't much faster than IE. Well, it was, but it was a huge leap between Opera and all the other competitors (excluding IE). But people still used Opera because of the features.

Don't get me wrong, speed is a very big thing in the browser, and it should definitely get faster and be widely known as the fastest browser on earth (in your face chrome fanboys). But what I'm saying is, it should also be advertised for other things than speed, because the browser has so much more. If I wanted only speed I would've switched to Chrome before 10.50. But I didn't, because I love what Opera has other than speed.

Well that was a long read.

Oh and I'm not saying articles about how fast it is aren't good, of course they are! The more articles about Opera the better. I think Opera has stunned the world with it's 10.5x and 10.6x browser because there are more Opera articles than firefox/chrome ones. It's good that people finally start to know the browser!

Mine is rather 320kbps— (256kbps)…
  • vipin kumarMonday, July 5, 2010 11:57:48 AM

My speed is 256 kbps only(Of which I get 60 kbps maxx!!) And so speed is a very BIG thing for me!! The kind of browsing experience I had in Opera cannot be compared!! And I have been using snapshots as my main browser and I never had a major problem!!

Actually, speed was what Opera originally promoted itself with, and it has been a recurring theme through the years.

Agree, but you have to be careful there with what you're trying to advertise the browser with. Customization is certainly not a plus for us, as FF and Chrome are far superior in this area thanks to the addons. Opera, for me, goes more along the lines of "why do we need addons, we already have everything essential built in". (… Maybe except for decent ad block, which seems to be a common complaint among the FF's almost-ready-to-switch users)

Well, the UI is fully customizable and it's very user friendly. "Customization without making your browser slow as a crab". The ad-block is great too, it works perfectly you just have to get the list yourself (fanboy's list is good).

Opera should make greasemonkey (userJS for us) a bit more compatible with the browser. Although it has limited greasemonkey support, most of the scripts don't actually work.

I think it would be useful, and therefore more people would use Turbo in Opera Desktop, if there were an quality setting for images, so that you can load all images also with 100% quality but texts, ... are compressed.

I've noticed that Turbo does actually have "modes", but there is no documentation as to what they do or how to set them on a per-site basis. Is this only for compatibility with cookies and javascript? Do some of the modes affect quality?
  • Rafael LuikTuesday, July 6, 2010 12:31:47 AM

I use Turbo sometimes to check if I'm having problems with my connection or the website I'm trying to visit is down. Thanks to Opera Software Turbo servers with their unlimited Kbps equiped with the fastest web browser engine I can make it quickly.

    @Cutting Spoon
    1. There aren't modes of turbo, just "disabled" (Turbo off), "enabled" (Turbo on) and "autodetect" (Turbo on when low speed connection is detected, off when normal/high speed connection is detected by Opera).
    2. Turbo can't be set in a per-site basis.
    3. Turbo doesn't affects JavaScript, just the page loading, specifically text and image load is faster. It can help you if you are visiting a busy-server website, since the page will be pre loaded by one of Opera Turbo's server and then sent to your computer or mobile device (Opera Mobile).

Correction: There is a file with certain domains and Turbo modes predefined. I imagine this file is important to the way Turbo works with certain sites. It is this file that I would like to have explained.

    Wrong.

Addons and customization are not the same things.

Does the file referred on the option actually exists for you?
  • Cutting SpoonWednesday, July 7, 2010 6:24:03 PM

In my case, yes. Seems to be a sort of companion for browser.js, sets special compatibility modes for Turbo on a per-site basis. I think this is why certain sites no longer fail to log-in while using Turbo. Part of this should have to do with cookies, and part with fooling scripts to keep everything lined up.
  • Rafael LuikThursday, July 8, 2010 8:57:30 PM

Hey, I found turbosettings.xml in two locale folders, I think they serve to provide a near server for these locations...

Hi, I love this browser too and I use Ubuntu Linux. However, I noticed starting with 10.60 stable version, I am unable to change default web page fonts to those I like. For example, when I go to any wikipedia page, the default font the browser displays is Sans-Serif (or perhaps DejaVu sans, not sure which one), and when I changed the "font family sans-serif" in the settings to "Arial", it doesn't have any effect. I've tried it with the latest 10.61 release as well, and it has the same problem.

Funnily enough, this problem didn't exist when I was using Opera 10.60 beta.

Does anyone know what's going wrong here?

I have a screenshot of this too if you'd like to see things for yourself.

How nice, a person with polite and detailed criticism. The testing feedback on new versions is at: http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/

Ruari has a few Linux feedback threads, especially for Java and fonts issues, at: http://my.opera.com/ruario/blog/

And the issue you're having may already be a topic in the forums. http://my.opera.com/community/forums/

If you think your issue is different from others, there is a simple bug-reporting tool: http://bugs.opera.com/wizard/

    I hope this helped.

My opera 11.50 is very fast, but more importantly, very stable. Chrome for example jumps all over the place when i try to type something in google search. Firefox is a little better but opera is fastest and steadiest. The only big complaint I have, not against opera, but against sites like msnbc.com. Everytime I try to log into msnbc.com, I get the message MUST UPGRADE ADOBE FLASH gain access. Also I'm not going into a panick attack because real player record plug is incompatible because chrome 11.50 has a super downloader shown at bottom edge of every youtube video.

That probably means you have an older version of flash player and you are on the video section of the site

You can check your version of flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

By the end of this year, all content should be available in .webm format, with any Flash plugin whatsoever.
