Try out the all-new camera browser!

January 11, 2012 · by Anna Rohleder

What's the first thing most people do when they try out a new computer?

Take a photo of themselves, of course!

Usually, you have to save the photo to a hard drive or some other form of local storage before sharing it with friends. But wouldn't it be more convenient if you could skip that step and do everything online?

Well, dear readers, our endlessly inventive engineers here at Opera have just brought that day a little closer to everyday browser reality.

A new Labs build has just been released which lets you take pictures with your computer's webcam and do cool stuff with them online - not only adding little flourishes like HTML5 moustaches (more on that below), but even turning your image into an Andy Warhol-style Pop Art portrait. In some cases, you can even e-mail the images with a single click!

To try it out, you'll need to download a separate Labs build of Opera. (Remember this is a test version, so it may have bugs, be unstable, or not work as expected.) Once you've got that, you can try out some of the demos that have been created to show off this cool new feature. These include the real-life color picker, the (in)famous Warholiser, the exploding camera, an old-fashioned photo booth and of course, the magical HTML5 moustache maker!

Check it out and let us know what you think! Or if you're interested in more technical details, you can read more about it here.

Wow, this is very old-fashioned !
I have been able to do this and more for the the last 10 years, using REBOL scripts
    http://www.rebol.com

If Opera used REBOL it would be even faster and more powerful.
  • ddalleyThursday, January 19, 2012 3:58:10 AM

REBOL? Wow, been using it since ~1997.

Let's see, if we could only have REBOL do things in our own Opera Unite area!
    Oh, yeah. That'd be cool.

I just wish Opera would work as well as REBOL.

Found a security issue already.... When I tried all the sites, after the second one, I didn't need to give access to the rest... That's when I noticed that the web cam was still on...
