Web Browser Grand Prix 2, Linux Edition

July 21, 2010 · by Aleksander Aas

The last review from Tom's Hardware generated a lot of interest. This time around they have tested both on Windows and Linux, and once again Opera comes out strong.

In total Opera scores well, but due to the way they test page loading and some controversy over Dromaeo Opera just missed the top spot. Have no fear though, Opera will fight back in the next round!

Check out Tom's Hardware for the full review, and don't forget to proclaim your love for Opera in the comments!

This makes Opera 10.60 for Windows the overall and speed-only winner when matched against the top five Web browsers for Windows and the top three in Linux.

    Unfortunately

If you remove only the memory tests though, Opera (seems to) come out on top (I think...). Given that both of the memory tests are just as bad as they were last time (neither test memory management in any meaningful way)...

but due to the way they test page loading

Wouldn't it be more honest to say "due to a bug in Opera which the test exposed..." (as you did when the previous test results were released)?

btw: another great opportunity that's lost, as the bug is still not fixed.
You couldn't have said 'thank you' to the testers for helping find the bug, and fix it ASAP.
But no, you blame the test setup instead...

I dont care whatever any one says. I love opera and that's it.

Will there be another weekend snapshot? Very happy to see that someone at Tom's is motivated to test again so soon.
  • Rafael LuikWednesday, July 21, 2010 7:56:39 PM

So Opera wins in 5 categories and is weak in 2.
Google Chrome wins in 4 categories and is weak in 2.
But Google Chrome wins and Opera step at three (last position)!?
Reason: the author uses Google Chrome as stated here and presumably Linux. He wanted Google Chrome win in Linux after saying Opera won in Windows.

    Very bad Memory Management
  • ErikThursday, July 22, 2010 2:17:47 AM

its really enjoyable when you browse the web with Opera, nice looks, nice page loading... maybe will manage memory better next time
you 'feel' when a page is coded messy

    go Opera !
  • Cutting SpoonThursday, July 22, 2010 2:38:24 AM

Well there was no low-memory test or mixed-applications test. This was a straight redux of the previous test, with vanilla Ubuntu in place of vanilla Win7.

If you want save memory try to disable the plugins (flash, java, etc.).
  • Erik ShikerinThursday, July 22, 2010 7:55:14 AM

We ( or most of us) now live in a time where 50 MB extra RAM conusmption, or even 100 MB RAM, isn't really an issue. Running Opera while running other programs will probably not slow down your system unless you have under 2 GB RAM. In which case you might want a new computer

j/k, Opera just lags a few tens of MB behind, and this shouldn't really be a problem.

Anyhow, Opera probably uses more memory because is has more features. Unite, Mail, Link, Widgets...

In today's world, browsers actually have another 100 MB RAM to take before deemed resource-craving, imo.

Although, I do see the fact that some people might have older computers - and in that case you might want to switch off 50% of all features, and run Opera like FireFox, just with 50% more features instead of 100

EVEN if Opera makes your PC go slow, you end up being more productive because of all the shortcuts and productivity boosts.

And all in all using Opera rather than FF is worth trading 100 MB RAM consumption for.

What I'd really love to see in Opera would be a "resource mod", like Turbo for your RAM. We did it for connections, we can do it for CPUs and RAM units! What if you hit a button, and Opera goes low-consumption. All plugins go off, except for the ones you are using. well, stuff like that.

    Opera all the way! :headbang:

How can Chrome win when Opera has more 1st places? That's just retarded. Tom's Failware fails again.

What on earth are you talking about?

Why would Opera rush out a fix for a completely irrelevant issue like that? It would make them look very stupid to basically treat something that doesn't even affect people as a security issue!

Opera did the right thing. You are just trolling.

Nope. Those features don't use a noticeable amount of memory unless you actually use them.

Opera uses "more" memory because it increases performance. It's by design.
  • Erik ShikerinThursday, July 22, 2010 11:46:13 AM

:faint: I'm embarrassed. Great point, though :p:
  • Erik ShikerinThursday, July 22, 2010 11:48:42 AM

but essentially, you do agree with me?
  • prd3Thursday, July 22, 2010 11:51:53 AM

Not really. Opera uses less RAM on old computers because it adapts itself to the amount of available memory. You can already change various settings to make it use "less".

"After you throw out non-speed tests, Opera has two wins above overall-winner Google Chrome. Unfortunately, Opera has five more losses than Google, too. Chrome also holds onto 11 second-place finishes, crowning Google's browser as the speed king on Linux."
Stop being so overly defensive prd3.

No not really. It's more a bug in the test than a bug in Opera. A comment posted on the previous "Grand Prix" test said that Opera is getting such high results because it is identifying sections of the test that produce no output, and skipping them. If it can do this with real world web-pages (identify useless code that isn't producing anything and skip it) then that would be a pretty great feature, not a bug.

That's not the test I'm talking about.
What I mean is the page loading test, where Haavard said that this was (and still is) caused by a bug in Opera (it re-decodes everything from cache again or something similar).

Well, of course prd3 aka Purdi aka ... certainly knows better than all the "trolls" he's surrounded by...)

The other issue is indeed an optimization which 'breaks' the test, so definitely not an Opera bug (rather the opposite  ).
  • lucideerThursday, July 22, 2010 7:35:56 PM

@Erik Shikerin Why opera dont low memory usage when i close my tabs
  • Erik ShikerinThursday, July 22, 2010 9:06:02 PM

because Opera's quick, and to be quick, you've gotta use a lot of memory
  • Cutting SpoonThursday, July 22, 2010 10:05:22 PM

IKoke: try minimizing and restoring the main Opera window, it should reduce the memory use.

It does, if the memory is needed by another app. If the memory is not needed elsewhere, it keeps it (why wouldn't it).

True. Opera should rush out v10.61 bug right now (while they continue to fiddle with 10.7 weeklies).

Because Opera caches stuff to make stuff faster. Even when you close a tab, it can still be used. See that "reopen closed tab" icon, among other things?

They should do not such thing. That would be completely retarded. Rush out a fix faster than most security fixes for a bug that doesn't even affect people? FAIL.

Which opera used for n70? I am using opera 4.2
  • vivyMonday, July 26, 2010 9:50:32 AM

Opera 10.6 is gud .But i feel some delay in loading and poor resume download function
  • Cutting SpoonMonday, July 26, 2010 4:34:06 PM

wsakh: your N70 can probably run Mini5.1, but you should know bookmarks for Mini are now stored in the "Opera Mini" folder of your Link account.

As for 10.60, which sites are causing the issue? Resume has not anything strange here.
  • vivyMonday, July 26, 2010 4:56:29 PM

Aftr loading pages, its take too much time in slower networks as compared to ie8 and chrome browser.
Eg: blog post page in my opera.
In chrme, the page appear sudenly
but in opera it take tøo much time and Load one by one. Some otr web site too shown similar problm.
  • vivyMonday, July 26, 2010 5:03:23 PM

I tried opera 5.1, 5.2 beta both not work perfectly in my n70. It is show a slow response in loadin, option selecting, its not smoot working lik 4.2 download manager perfect than 4.2 but not good as in uc web. N72,N90 also hav same problm. Wat can i do?
  • vivyMonday, July 26, 2010 5:07:42 PM

How can use opera 10.6 wit slow network?(mobile edge modem) how can i load only the content?
  • Cutting SpoonMonday, July 26, 2010 8:15:05 PM

For 5.x on the phone, I'm surprised you have trouble. I use 5.1 on a very weak SCP3800/Katana LX. 5.1 has been good for me.

For 10.60 on the PC, grab "Fanboy's Adblock" to replace your normal ad-blocking file. Turbo button in lower left only loads plugin content that you click on in page. Opera also works with the mobile versions of most sites.

    1) I believe there is a 5.1 for S60
    2) No I do not work for Opera, but I use most of their products frequently
    3) This is a thread not a shoutbox, please Message me if you have any more questions
