Which of these is not a web browser?

October 25, 2010 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Not a web browser

This was a question asked in the Indian version of "Who wants to be a Millionaire" last night. The contestant was not sure if Chrome or Facebook was not a web browser, so she did an audience poll. 85% of the audience stated that Facebook is not a web browser. At the end, the host said:

Chrome is a new browser in the market, people say it's fast, and of course everyone knows about Firefox and Opera.

The show has 100 million viewers or more and Amitabh Bachchan (the host) is quite famous in India. Opera is the most popular mobile browser in India with more than 59% market share. Good stuff.

    59%? Yay! :)
Is it correct we don't have a forum in Indian language?
  • Sushubh25. October 2010, 08:54

Well, the point is most of us here in India do not even use our native languages online.

I would have to rely on Google Indic tools to post in Hindi for example.

    नमस्कार

There is a Opera users India group though. I had started it. unfortunately, I didn't get any time to maintain it. So it's pretty much dead now.

Funny they misspelled Fire fox. Everybody knows species names should be in italic and shouldn't be joined up.
  • Swapnil25. October 2010, 17:23

Most easy question yet asked by KBC :)
  • Anton Diaz25. October 2010, 17:28

  • Vijay Kaul25. October 2010, 17:28

@João Of course they do. In fact, they have too many of their own languages to speak. The two broadly spoken languages, Hindi and Tamil, are popular in different geographic regions; however, the colonial legacy of the British left the educated class with English fluency. Thus, English is the lingua franca in India.

And, thus, English will remain the world's common language. Though Chinese may make a showing -- especially if the computer input can be streamlined through, hopefully, better UI.
  • João David25. October 2010, 17:38

    @Vijay, thanks for the explanation!

  • J.D.25. October 2010, 23:53

"And the answer is... Chrome! Yes, Chrome is not a browser; Chrome is a data mining device that also happens to display web pages."
  • thegeo26. October 2010, 00:02

The fourth choice should've been Internet Explorer instead of Facebook. It's too crappy to qualify as a web browser.
