Which web browser do you recommend for security reasons?

September 5, 2012 · by Espen André Øverdahl

Staying secure on the web today is important, and choosing the most secure web browser is even more important. Much of today's malicious software is spread via the web, or has a web-based component. Here at Opera we take security seriously, and we have many features built-in to help you stay secure on the web.

In addition to our built-in features, we also offer extensions to Opera to further increase your online security with addons such as Web of Trust and Ghostery.

The website NakedSecurity asks: If one of your friends or family had suffered a computer security problem, what browser would you recommend that they use?

If you think Opera's the best choice, then we'd appreciate if you could give us your vote. Simply click on the image below to vote on their website.

I like and use Opera, but for security... I think you underestimate Chrome's "every page has its own process" approach.
(I also think that security isn't measured by the votes from the internet. Which I think is pretty much proved by the fact that ATM 6.48% *recommends* IE. On a security site.)

well, while I voted for opera ( because it had few flaws over the years, less than the other ones, and because it's less targeted by hackers due to the small market share), but I think others ( ff et ch ) have more security features than opera, sadly !

Is voting for IE a good enough troll?

    No Sandboxed iframe
    No Seamless iframe
    No iframe with inline contents
    No mixed content protection

The third party tracking protection solutions are weak due to lack of powerful Extension API (look at Ghostery before and after, furthermore when I restart Opera, it doesn't initialize Ghostery at the first time, so if I open Opera with many tabs the tracker scripts are run at the first time until the Ghostery doesn't initialized.

The multi process architecture is nothing without intelligent memory guard. For example if a site will eat all system memory the whole system will be unresponsive despite the multiprocess architecture. When I hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc the Task Manager pops up after 2-3 minutes if it pops up before the whole system would crash.

I dont know why you guys used extensions when opera has it built in for years

    for example adblock

    i use this instead

    http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/ad-block

and ulrfilter.ini is just epicly amazing(with addition to the 12.50 improvement of course)

i just wish the author of that site would update the list frequently though.

    using 12.02

I preinstall Opera when I build new computers for people.

It lowers my cost of having to help them when they eventually visit an infected webpage.

Now if only Java would get itself secured.

Since Opera is a mobile browser I would like to vote Opera plus Mozilla Firefox.
  • DillonThursday, September 6, 2012 6:05:48 PM

I voted for Chrome because of its sandboxing and aggressive support of those who report security bugs. Things I wish Opera would do...

I love being honest and mean, so I'll say that I don't think this is a subjective matter that can be voted for :cat: And Opera currently doesn't excel in this one due to reasons Penge explained.
  • Charles SigwartThursday, September 13, 2012 7:11:09 PM

I can't even get here without warnings because myopera.com, googletagservices.com and apis.google.com have expired security certificates, which your site ignores.

I won't vote, sorry. Why? Because the browser is not really a security issue in itself. My choice is basically a matter of convenience, efficiency, compliance with standards.

The main security flaw usually lies between the keyboard and the chair: learn the risks, be careful, mind your privacy, manage your credentials, use adequate tools, keep away from dirty places.

If you don't, you are at risk, whatever your browser.
