64-bit builds and new Core with HTML5 Drag and Drop, CSS Animations, updated CSS Transitions, and Out of Process Plugins

March 26, 2012 · by Haavard

This Opera 12 (Wahoo) snapshot has an upgraded Core (Presto) engine with several new features, and for the first time we are able to present you with 64-bit builds for Windows and Mac in snapshots. This has been made possible by, among other things, plugins now running in a separate process.

For more details on Core changes in this build, including demos for the new HTML5 and CSS3 features, head over to the Opera Developer Relations blog.

HTML5

This build introduces initial support for HTML5 Drag and Drop, a technology that allows Web pages to drag elements, selections and microdata from one page onto another, or drag files from the operating system and drop them onto a Web page.

Currently, there are some bugs and limitations with this initial HTML5 Drag and Drop support, such as issues with dragging to and from external applications. We have created a forum thread for HTML5 Drag and Drop where you can view known issues, discuss bugs, and post general feedback.

You may also notice that some existing demos do not seem to work properly. The reason for this is that they sometimes rely on behaviors that do not comply with the specification. As we continue our work on this feature, we will look further into this and try to come up with a solution.

CSS3

We have added experimental support for CSS Animations, which introduce a way to specify animations that can be more intricate than CSS Transitions, and can keep running continuously.

Our CSS Transitions support has also been updated. With CSS Transitions, rendering changes that normally happen instantly can be made to gradually happen over time instead. Among other things we have updated color transitions, enabled transitions on background positions, box shadows and more, and added the ability to transition through one or more abrupt steps.

64-bit builds with Out of Process Plugins

The final big update is the inclusion of out-of-process plugins for the first time in a snapshot (previous OOPP builds were Opera Labs releases). For those unfamiliar with OOPP, the benefits are twofold. Running plugins in a separate process gives Opera a level of protection from plugin instability, which was one of the most common sources of browser crashes and freezes. OOPP should give a major boost to Opera's own stability, and allows the possibility of running 32-bit plugins in a 64-bit browser.

For Mac, we’ll cease to distribute the 32-bit build and only distribute a Universal Binary containing both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This means all users on systems that supports it will use 64-bit or otherwise fallback to 32-bit from now on.

Whilst our new OOPP implementation is now of snapshot quality it is still work in progress. We have further nice improvements lined up but don't let that stop you reporting any problems that you see.

Known Issues
  • DSK-359770 Out of Process Plugins causing tab related freezes (mostly on startup)
  • HTML5 Drag and Drop is work in progress. Things like dragging to and from external applications may not work. Some existing demo sites may not work fully
  • HTML5test.com could freeze or show other problems on Mac
  • OTW-8246 Opera 64-bit on Windows not supported on Google+ (google plus)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

    Slim Scrollbars extension doesn't seem to work any more. But else an awesome snapshot!

    And you seem to have fixed the faulty full screen animation on Mac. Anyway, native Lion/Mountain Lion scrollbars support would be nice!

    bug: we can't close Dragonfly window by "X" button. Only via Ctrl-Shift-I. Looks like problem of CORE-43253 smile
  • pseudo555-tafMonday, March 26, 2012 2:26:44 PM

    Plugin on demand seems to freeze tab too.

    Step i used :
    * using previous 32 bit for windows build (link & unite activated).
    * set plugin on demand in preference, not for each website).
    * upgrade to win64 build.
    * gmail can't load page (freeze), twitter seems to never stop loading.
    * Close Opera : link ask to synchronized, and i kill it)
    * Got this multiple time :
    http://files.myopera.com/BS-Harou/files/virtual.png]
    * restart opera, desactive plugin on demand from preferences.
    * restart.

    And now, it works fine.

    So can someone else tests plugin on demand issue ?

  • blaximaMonday, March 26, 2012 2:31:11 PM

    Fresh usb install. When it first opens and is loading the speed dial I closed it and it crashed.
    Open then close, crash.
    Open then close, crash.
    Open it and start browsing, no crash. Closes fine after that but I have a bunch of crash logs that it failed sending.

    win xp sp3
    32 bit usb install

    Issue with button:active

    button:active {
    border: 1px solid blue;
    }

    In Opera, when I click on the button the first color is black ;/

    The animation demos don't exactly freeze or crash Opera (the animation keeps on running) - but they lock out any UI input. I can't use the mouse or keyboard to do anything at all once the page has loaded!

    Win32 version.
  • TimurkiNMonday, March 26, 2012 2:53:39 PM

  • DeithriandeithrianMonday, March 26, 2012 2:56:40 PM

    On the 64bit build as soon as I installed Flash it started to behave like usual, meaning Epic Lag on everything.
    Disabled Hardware Acceleration but that didn't help.
    Disabled HW Acceleration in Flash as well, and now things are bearable.
    Note that in IE and the rest of the Browsers out there, there are no such problems, including under Linux.
    Only in Opera 12...

    Actually, I'm getting moments of lag or non-response to actions all the time...

    It seems that keyboard & mouse input is completely ignored while anything is loading... whether that's elements on the current page or pages in the background.

    Can you make all-in-one x86 and 64-bit installation in future?

    I understand that it not possible for now to run 64 by default in Release version in Windows (cause plugins problems i think)

    But may be something like this:

    /opera.exe
    /opera64.exe

    OMiGod OMiGod OMiGod OMiGod OMiGod!!

    Um.. sorry. Just awed at x64 landing even if just in Opera snapshots. I've had Opera instability for ages (I routinely run Opera at about 3.2 ~ 3.8 GB ram) and I've never been quite sure if it was partly due to memory request failure in x32 space. Will test and report, but this is huge for me, I just had to say thank you (even though off-topic!)

    PS the rest of the list is impressive too

    PPS which Google services are known to have issues with the x64 version? Is it fixable?

    Very nice progression, thanks.

    Opera freezes when I check for updates (looking for updated browserjs). I must enter Task Manager to end process, yet Opera's separate plugin process (opera_plugin) remains, needing an additional End Process action in Task Manager.
    I suppose the two are purposefully not joined in this action.

    Im also experiencing lots of freezing when moving from Speed Dial (when they're updating) to another tab. Maybe its DSK-359770, or that 35 Speed Dial's are too much?

    Win7-32, update over previous snapshot (which was a clean install), no HWA.

    Cheers!
