Beta stabilisation and Mac clean-up

May 10, 2012 · by Adam Minchinton

In the run up to the Opera 12 final, we have been busy working hard on improving stability, and fixing bugs! Our HTML5 Drag and drop support has major improvements in this snapshot, along with all the other fixes.

On Mac we are endeavoring to become better by making Opera faster, easier and smarter. To achieve this we are with this snapshot adding more native OS X features as well as discontinuing some less relevant features.

Opera was the first major web browser in the Mac App Store, and we are making sure we stay there by introducing support for OS X Sandboxing in Opera 12. Sandboxing is a operating system level security measure that limits an applications access to the system to prevent malicious code from taking over an app and causing damage to the system. OS X Mountain Lion also introduces Gatekeeper, protecting users by only allowing Apple developer signed or sandboxed applications run on the system. Opera will be one of these applications. Look forward to even more of OS X Mountain Lion's new features in the future.

This snapshot also includes a more focused user interface for Mac. Legacy toolbars such as the start bar, navigation bar and the bar that once upon a time was the “main” browser toolbar, are all gone. Furthermore, the introduction of Themes in Opera 12 have made us remove the advanced preferences overriding things like the default icon size and the color tone of the skin. Finally, we have removed some little used features on Mac; IRC chat and BitTorrent. For these we believe there are better alternatives than the current features, and this move allow us to focus our resources on the stuff that really makes the browser better.

All these changes are only applicable for Mac for now.

Known issues
  • DSK-363145 (Tab close button is not ignored over inactive background tab when tab width is narrow)
  • DSK-362951 ([Mac] Only English dictionary and dict. installer is non-functional)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Sandboxed Mac version

We have included with this snapshot a sandboxed version of Opera so you can try out what we will be distributing though the Mac App Store in the future. Please give it a try and let us know if you have any problems, and remember to read the extra information and warnings below. If in doubt stick to the standard snapshot smile

Important notes for Mac users: Auto-update is disabled for the sandboxed build. It will not receive newer snapshots or final releases automatically. Your Opera Next profile will be migrated into a sandboxed profile when running a sandboxed build for the first time. Please backup your profile before running the build in case you want to go back to a non-sandbosed build.

MAC WARNING: Mac users who opt for the sandbox build must backup their Opera Next profiles. The profile will be migrated to the sandbox when running a sandboxed build for the first time.

Finally, we have removed some little used features on Mac; IRC chat and BitTorrent.

So I can use Opera 12 to get on IRC in the offce (Windows) but not at home (Mac)? It's a shame Opera's losing feature parity across platforms, although I would appreciate it if less features mean better browsing, stability, (scrolling) performance, etc.
  • Ravindran NavaneethanRavindranThursday, May 10, 2012 1:28:20 PM

    Great.

Is issue with Google+ fixed on Windows x64 builds?

Why would removing the IRC client make Opera's scrolling smoother? Why would it change anything (in practice) if you aren't even using it?

I use it a lot and every time I post something the browser freezes.

I meant to say that without those features, Opera developers will probably have more time to maintain, update and enhance other features.

Some skin issues on OS X 10.7.3, HWA on
    - Text on inactive tabs is white
    - There is no 'clicked' state of bookmarks in the bookmarks bar when tapping the trackpad. (There is when you physically 'click' on the trackpad).

Edit: text issue only occurring with HWA on.
  • OlliOlli91Thursday, May 10, 2012 1:38:31 PM

Using the sanxboxed version deleted my extensions settings and my speed dial background picture. Also Growl (I use 1.2.2) and Ghostery do not work.

Edit: Looks like the settings get lost on every startup!
  • BS-HarouThursday, May 10, 2012 1:40:11 PM

It is not possible to drag element when the mouse cursor is on text:

    http://html5demos.com/drag

Not even when you add the unselectable attribute in dragonfly on the elements.
  • Andrew FrazierAndrewDFrazierThursday, May 10, 2012 1:41:25 PM

It's a pity that the issue of plugins not being recognised on Windows is still there, because since it was fixed in the Mac version that one has been a really good browser.

I'm glad to see that the Personal Bar wasn't one of the toolbars removed. Please don't take it away in future builds.

One thing that I've noticed in the MAc version in this build and, I think, the previous one is that new spelling dictionaries don't install. I only tried a couple but when it gets to the step of accepting the license the dialog says "The (null) dictionary has the following license:" and there is no license shown. Accepting the license allows the dialog to be completed but the dictionary isn't installed.

Drag and drop fixed? Looks like I might start using this instead of 11.6.
  • kapsiThursday, May 10, 2012 1:44:23 PM

Can someone post a screenshot of the new Mac interface?
  • mrdThursday, May 10, 2012 1:46:39 PM

Looks like you've cleared up the HWA Wx64 issue with some text writing on top of itself?

At least, where I used to get it (BBC News) I'm not getting it now.
  • D1sasterp1eceThursday, May 10, 2012 1:51:06 PM

Panel edge toggle starts off black - e.g. when you launch Opera, it is black before you hover it for the first time. It also seems to have some issues with its hover state - it is sometimes blinking
Plus, DSK-362380 that I experienced and another user got to confirm it. Here's a topic on that.

There came no changes that you can see directly with this build. They just removed some bars that were optional. My interface for example didn't change at all. And I wouldn't recommend you to use this if you're a classic final user, this is still highly unstable stuff.

Btw: I don't know when, but you fixed the ugly full screen animation wooho!

opera is changing significantly but their users not. So opera can gain more market share but it will loss a part of formery users.

Ssssh! They will also remove Panels if they're realize that can be buggy. bigsmile
  • ClashCityRockerclashcityrockerThursday, May 10, 2012 2:10:12 PM

Hmm, sounds like this functionality is also being removed on other platforms soon too, why would they remove them from only one platform?

Sad, as I use IRC all the time. What next? M2? (that would make me ditch Opera totally).

This hidden roadmap is very frustrating, not knowing what's instore, does Opera share the same goals as I do anymore?
  • Wojciech EysymonttNastyThursday, May 10, 2012 2:11:43 PM

Has there been made any attempts to improve startup times in this build? There is no info in this changelog.

Also, has Google Docs making Opera window not repainting bug been fixed?

    re: IRC gutting

Features are why I stay/put up with with Opera. If you are going to get rid of features I might as well move to... Chrome.

Chrome is implementing features you are getting rid of. ie. Apps(widgets)

    Confirmed

Also in previous build found a bug:
When you select one link in Bookmarks panel and with arrow keys try to "scroll" list down - only selected row updates.
This is known bug or submit it if others will confirm it?

Please correct the focus stealing that happens on startup, I think because of the loading of extensions ! Else, one has to wait about 10s before being able to type in the search box, before that the focus will be stolen and the typed text will be cleared !
    Steps:
    - launch Opera
    - immediately start typing in the search box
    - after a few seconds the focus is stolen, the search is cleared, you have to start over :'-(
  • pursanovdThursday, May 10, 2012 2:15:57 PM

Bittorrent- utorrent and more, chat- there are tons of webchat/desktop IRC/various protocols. Legacy code=bugs&security holes. So this move seems logical. For mail i moved to Outlook because M2 is not stable in Opera Next, so i just cant use it normally(Tho Outlook is not free). No, really, better save your resources to make FASTER, more stable, more standard based Browser and not all-in-one solution that is always buggy.
  • Afonso1Thursday, May 10, 2012 2:18:29 PM

LOL! Opera could gain more market share if the websites would work the same way as the other browsers. Or if they fix the position: fixed scrolling bug. The majority of average users doesn't know the removed features. The Chrome (bare bone) is 22MB The Opera is 10-12MB. So even the size doesn't matter.

The clean-up is useless. These features made some users happy, but they should have known at the time of the introduce that doesn't change the world none of them.

Speaking of Mac cleanup what about RAM usage? Seems this build is eating more RAM than ever (over 700MB right now with 2 opened tabs, both not containing any flash or complex JS)! That would be a real cleanup, fixing some huge memory leaks! And we still have no Lion scrollbars...sad

Edit: At the end of writing this it got to 900MB...I only wrote this and did nothing else. Usage is still going up and up...really strange behaviour!
And then there are these whole system freezes for about 30 seconds (not to speak of the several full crashes) that occur especially when extra windows (like Opera settings) are opened.

Edit2: Ok I tested without HWA and RAM usage gets much better. I guess this is an HWA problem then.

Really? Chrome is getting widgets that run outside the browser?

If not, what are you talking about. Running "apps" inside the browser is something Opera can do already.

Tabs keep closing randomly as soon as I click on them and release the mouse button...32 and 64 bits on Windows 7 64 bits..

This is not happening if I keep the button clicked and move the mouse cursor outside the tab area and then I release the mouse button...

What am I supposed to report? I don't know the reason of huge RAM usage, but since everyone can reproduce this by just opening Opera and surfing for like 5 minutes I don't see the point of further investigation. That's what the devs should do.

One of operas biggest problems is putting out v1.0 of cool innovative features and then leaving them to rot. Removing the decrepit features will be a good thing if it means they can focus efforts on properly maintaining what is left. The truth is there are far better ways to do IRC and torrents on the desktop.

I am sad about torrents though, bittorrent is IMO the latest evolution of moving files around on the internet, from FTP > HTTP GET > torrents, and ive been waiting for all browsers to implement at least basic support of the revolutionary file transfer technology. Theres no better way of introducing it to new people than have them click a torrent link and it just WORKS because the browser itself picks it up. Im sure they put a bit of effort in, all that would be needed to bring the opera bittorrent implementation up to modern spec is DHT/PEX, UTP (libutp is available i believe) encrypted connections, UDP tracker support and magnet support. Apart from that, it doesnt have to be anything fancy like utorrent, just basic download support. So yeah im just a bit disappointed that bittorrent never got updated to keep pace with developments.

Drag & drop didn't work when dragging tab on to collapsed Tab Stack.
If dragging on collapsed Tab Stack from right to left dragged tab jump to the left from Tab Stack.
If dragging on collapsed Tab Stack from left to right dragged tab left on place (if it was the left most from Tab Stack) or jump to the left of Tab Stack if it's not left most from Tab Stack.

Opera's been the same and stuck to its guns for the 7+ years I've been using it. They went from 0.5% market share to maybe 2% by some measurements. That's incredibly slow by any measurement. Maybe they are trying a new path to get users faster or just focus their efforts to get more specs and features out the door faster. Whatever the case, they have my blessing.

Tab bar redrawing is still messed up after playing with themes and returning to "native" skin.
Also in previous build native video on YouTube very often caused no longer redrawing UI (for example tab change was only visible through window title change...).

I think you should not drop these features, instead:

-Drop Support for these features and
-Make these available as seperate package.

Feature like widgets and bittorent client can be removed because much better alternatives are avaliable.

But for Unite , IRC (and mail client maybe) can be added as optional into Opera setup. i.e; User can be prompted if he wants to install these feautres confused This will make everybody happy.

Or atleast provide these as seperate package, please. sad

Sad. Most of the conversations i have on IRC involve links to something on the web, so running the client inside the browser made it simpler.
Here's hoping they'll reconsider. But knowing my luck, I better start looking for an alternative.
The new snapshot is much appreciated though! smile
  • DillonAstrophizzThursday, May 10, 2012 3:18:32 PM

I imagine IRC and bittorrent will be removed on other platforms. Saying that bittorrent and IRC clients on Mac are good enough that Opera devs can redirect their attention while claiming that's not the case for Windows or Linux would be ridiculous since those platforms have better clients for both services than Macs do. I'm glad Opera is getting rid of features they've let rot.
