Feedback wanted on themes and tab/titlebar integration in Opera 12 on Linux/FreeBSD

June 1, 2012 · by Ruarí Ødegaard

As you probably know by now Opera 12 is coming soon and with it Linux and FreeBSD will gain support for tab/titlebar integration as part of our work on Themes (a subject I have discussed on my personal blog several times before). Now that 12 is just around the corner, feedback on this new feature has started to ramp up. This is of course a good thing, yet at the same time following the feedback can be a little hard because the issues that you guys might see are highly dependent on your specific setup.

To separate the bugs from the intended behaviour and the things we can fix from the things we can't fix, we need more precise feedback, so this is your opportunity to provide it!

Ideally this is the information we would like to have (if you can provide it all then great, if not please provide as much as you can):

  • A screen shot demonstrating the issue (don't post in-line, a link to the image will do)
  • The Opera Next version number (including minor build number) you are testing
  • Any customisations you have made to Opera (e.g. is "Show Border" on or off, have you disabling close button on each tab, have you moved the tabs to the left or right, is "Show Menu Bar" enabled or disabled, etc.)
  • Do you have a Theme installed (if so which Theme, ideally with a link to the Theme)
  • What Window Manager (WM) and/or Desktop Environment (DE) you are running under. Including the version number of the WM/DE.
  • The name and version number of your distro. This is important as your distro may have a customised or patched version of the WM/DE.
  • If you have made any customisations to the WM/DE settings (e.g. disabling decorations within the WM itself)
  • If you run tools that adjust Window behaviour (e.g. Devil's Pie)
  • Do you have composting on or off (and if it is on, what video card drivers are you using).

You can get the name of the WM and compositing status by running Opera Next from the command line as follows (see below), though it will not tell you the WM version number:

opera-next --full-version

Your distro's package manager can tell you the version number of the WM/DE. The settings you have selected you will need to remember yourself. wink

If you are unsure about the settings you have selected for Opera you could try starting with a blank/clean test profile. One way of doing this (which will work in most shells) is by starting Opera next from a terminal as follows:

opera-next -pd $(mktemp -td opera-test-profile.XXXXXX) &

Finally, a tip. The most robust method of running is with "Show Borders" enabled because you are then doing things the native way.

I hope that you notice my report (not via report bug wizard,though..) that RSS feeds are not coming to M2.. It works only when I restart Opera.. reloading RSS (at least from this blog) in M2 doesnt work at all..

    I can read ... wink

The only issue I have with 1440 and Show Borders is the size of the tab bar changes. I'm one of those people who sets "Chrome Integration Drag Area" to 5 so that the menu button appears in the same line as the tabs (mostly), when I disable the borders it is not in the same line any more. I suppose that could work if you reclaimed the space where the title bar had been ... but you don't, so I end up losing about 1 line of space when I change. On this laptop where the screen is only 768 pixels high, that's quite a bit ... I'd hate to think about it on a netbook or tablet that was 1024x600 (or 800x480). yikes

Either automatically resize the window when you hide the border, or else allow us to have the menu button in line with the tabs. (If there's a separate setting somewhere, that's fine - but we don't know of it yet.)

I am not able to install themes, it reaquiers Opera 12. beta
To use extensions and themes, you need the Opera browser

    Whats wrong, please?

    Issues:
    - if window is maximized when disabling menu bar then "Opera Next" button won't show up (also space is not reserved for it) until window is resized (work fine after returning to maximized state);
    - when menu bar is visible there shows up kind of glitch on the left edge which if clicked switches current tab to tab ( http://6g6.eu/sih0-h14102.png );
    - maybe a bit unrelated, but menu bar with native style has wrong background ( http://6g6.eu/sih0-j14102.png ).

    when using themes (e.g. flaskepost):
    - there is no space between tabs and the window-border (at least 1px would be nice)
    - it's not possible to drag the window by clicking on empty space in the tabbar (chromium can do this)

When I have Green Grass theme enabled and I drag the titlebar to the top of the screen to Snap the window to fullscreen the maximize button don't change state. When I hover the mouse of the button it updates. Same behavior on all themes tested so far.

Opera #1440 32bit, Win7 64bit, hwa disabled, ATI 5570, Catalyst v12.1, Just default Win7 theme with desktop comp enabled.

Resizing the window is also slow with HWA disabled especially when I snap from fullscreen to left/right. With default theme its super fast as always. (26 speed dials)

Well... there is one big shortcoming on default theme on ALL three platforms.
Everything is fine, if tab bar is placed on top

    http://i.imgur.com/giSNp.png

But when tab bar is placed at bottom, then active tab is "cut off" from the page itself as seen on this picture

    http://i.imgur.com/kzrFj.png

When active and inactive tab is almost the same colour, it makes the usability even worse.

Luckily there are still some usable themes

    http://i.imgur.com/p3dEG.png

Why cannot the default theme be made this way???

    Show border is off

    Using theme 'Stairs'
    https://addons.opera.com/en/themes/details/stairs/

    Issue:
When not maximized The Opera Button always show the text Opera Next, no matter if I chose Only Images in Appearence, and I can't change the setting now because I can't right click over it to choose Appearence and can't select if Appearance window is already opened.
If I open Appearance when maximized, select the Opera button and un-maximize it shows me an empty space on left of tab line.

With Show Border on it don't look nice because a white bar is shown, and Show Border was turn off automatically when I installed the theme.

It's not a theme problem but a design flaw.
1.Add an icon or button (for example the profile avatar) to status bar with shift+drag
2.Now try to click the button that appears on status bar
3.The title of the button appears to the left displacing the button itself
4.This makes it hard to click the button

(Please make the Title to appear to the right)
  • kangarrouFriday, June 1, 2012 5:25:26 PM

Not about themes, but it seems that "window.close()" does not work for reused tabs, just in newly opened

(And it can be tested simply by Ctrl+U and Apply Changes)
  • kuedeFriday, June 1, 2012 5:29:03 PM

Title bar integration: When Opera is maximised the window can't be moved by draging the title bar.
Additionally it doesn't look much KDE-like but I think that's more a "I need to search a theme" issue.

    Opensuse 12.1 x86_64
    KDE 4.8.3 with kwin
    build 1439
  • kubat1987Friday, June 1, 2012 6:41:16 PM

I don't want to be a master of the obvious, but the GTK and KDE integration is quite poor in general, and requires some serious work. In KDE there are not even shadows under menus. Firefox or Chrome/Chromium integrate quite nicely, while Opera looks very non-native, with the default menu, tab- and toolbar style. Making it blend with a non-default GNOME theme in fact requires a manual skin tweaking and customizing (I once did so for Elementary GNOME theme).

It's a bit strange, since Windows and OSX integration is actually pretty nice.

I also guess an integration with the "golobal manu" in Mac, GNOME and KDE could be a very good idea, as it seems more convenient.

The *only* change necessary for me to reproduce this is to hide the Tab Bar. I am sure it is intentional behaviour to prevent users from "accidentally" locking themselves out of the menu... but it is ugly. http://r3m.co/DSK-363882

Guess what version "12.00" looks like if you only read the first character. (And yes, websites did do that, and suddenly Opera 10 was too old to be supported, hence Opera reporting itself as version 9 first, then the real version after that.)

here some more problems i found while playing around:
    - can confirm the flashing e.g. while pressing ctrl+o, ctrl+p, ...

    - additionaly when this flashing happens, the window loses its controls and the opera-menu.
it's like the window isn't in maximised state anymore and the controls are a row above, but it still covers the whole screen.

The following bug was supposedly fixed in the previous build (DSK-364558), but it still exists in the latest snapshot 1440. Below is the bug I filed last week.

The skin used in the screenshots can be found here:
    http://kyleabaker.com/2010/05/26/ambiance-skin-and-speed-dial-backgrounds/

    [DSK-364609]

Summary: Disabling close button on each tab causes O-menu to break to separate toolbar

    Steps to reproduce
    ===================
    1. In Ubuntu 12.04, open Opera.
    2. Opera preferences -> Advanced.
    3. Uncheck the option "Show close button on each tab".

    Expected result
    ===============
I only change I expect is for the close buttons to disappear.

    Actual result
    =============
The close buttons disappear, but the O-menu breaks to separate toolbar.

When I use a theme on Windows 7 with the latest Opera 12 snapshot, the "x" to close the window isn't aligned to the very corner of the screen, violating Fitt's Law. So I don't use them.
  • Martin TangmartintangslSaturday, June 2, 2012 2:14:40 AM

Just make sure not to use a whole bar to show only several buttons. Say, "Show close button on each tab" is disabled and an additional bar appears for 4 buttons only. This is not so good. The expected style for existing Opera UI may be another option to show the bar, plus a button set of tab resizing buttons that can be added anywhere. So, I would expect some more changes in the future.

I have the same issue: Menu-button in a toolbar of its own above the tab-bar, when "Show close button on each tab" is disabled. This happens with -pd in a clean directory.
Also, the tray icon is botched in tint2
Build 1440, Arch X64, Openbox w/o compositing, Qtcurve, show borders true.

I was able to RM (right mouse) click on the upside down "Opera Next" tab (fig.1.), then go to Appearance page -> Toolbars -> Placement and switch the option from "Top" to "off" to get such results as shown on fig.2.

I have two problems related to skin.
    1. Show borders option is disabled. When I open some open/save dialog (ctrl-s or ctrl-o) tab panel is flashing, then minimize/maximize/close buttons disappear. To have them back I have to disable Maximize option from taskbar, then maximize Opera again.
    2. Opera doesn't remember Opera Button settings when Maximize/Minimize. When I set Opera button to hide (right click on Opera Button->customize->appearance->placement->Off) then minimize/maximize Opera window button appears again(maybe add possibility to remove this button).

I do not know if this is bug or intended behavior, but Opera Next button moved from "left from tabs" to "above tabs". Also Opera Next button doesn't react to right click like previously.

How I am going to disable text on it and leave icon only easily?

Other non-standard Opera options: open new tabs next to current tab, do not show close button on each tab, tab thumbnail preview disabled, plug-ins disabled, referrer sending disabled.

Edit: It looks that it is strictly related to "Open new tabs next to current one" option. When I switch off, Opera menu button is placed correctly. When I switch it on back, it again place Opera menu button above tabs.

Nearly all the pictures placed in Opera blogs flicker when the pages with them are scrolled up/down with a slider. See the short movie (2.18 MB):

    http://pp.blast.pl/opera/desktopteam/0026_baseline_640x480_1200k_sh_g0.flv

Do not pay attention to the flickering effects caused by the CRT's vertical refreshing frequencies.

Like a lot of people, i'd like to get rid of the menubar/menu button.
I use gentoo with i3 (wm) with no toolbars at all.
With or without HWA, no theme, no special options apart "opening windows instead of tabs".
In opera 11 it's ok but since a few builds in 12 it's not possible.
I've already created a topic in the beta forums…
Thank you and keep up the excellent work ;-)

Sorry, I'm not a Linux user, but I'm experiencing problems with new themes on Windows as well.
That's how ANY new skin looks for me:

Opera 12.00 build 1440 (but it was like that for any previous build)

Menu bar disabled, never use it.

If there is some topic on Windows theme issues, please, give me a link.

I had no idea that Opera was doing that on Linux, and a few days ago I was getting again frustrated about the extra bar for the minimize, maximize, close buttons bigsmile

So, Positive feedback here if it is useful (worked only with "show windows border" disabled from the Opera Config - which is also the default value). I tried the grass theme, and it works fine:
    http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/4003/operagrasstheme.png

    - The Opera Next version: 12.00 beta, 1440, x86_64, 3.2.0-24-generic
    - Any customisations you have made to Opera: The menu button shows only the "O" image. The "show windows border" is 0. If set to one, then the the annoying extra bar is back again!!
    - Theme installed: Grass https://addons.opera.com/en/themes/details/grass/
    - Window Manager (WM) and/or Desktop Environment (DE): Metacity 2.34.1, Gnome 3 (gnome-panel)
    - Name and version number of your distro: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
    - Compositing is off.
    - Drivers are the default open source. Running on an ATI Radeon HD 5770

    `opera-next --full-version` reports:

BTW. Is there any way to remove Minimize, Restore/Maximize, Close buttons which shows up after making Opera window borderless? They are really sweet, but I do not need them. I would personally use Opera always maximized, and will not minimize it. I will also not close it, and if really need to, will close using Alt-F4 or Opera menu (which is safer in case of having multiple windows opened).

Yes, confirmed for me as well., and it happens always if I change to "restored" mode (clicking on the button that switches between restored and maximized). My configuration details are above.
Also I have set only the "O" image to appear, but still in "Restored" mode I get the full Opera Next text for the menu button.

Sorry, I meant ENABLED of course) I never use O button. What is ALT-F11 supposed to do? It currently does nothing for me...

On Linux, it is equivalent to checking/unchecking a "Show menu bar" option in Opera menu. Maybe on Windows it is different shortcut.

    Hi Ruari

Sorry, but I'm still sticking with Build 1387 for now, which works flawless for me, because when I update to later builds, I have the following bugs:
    1. The address bar is completely black, which obliterates the information showing.
    2. Unable to access my webmail on: https://webmail.shaw.ca/uwc/auth
Hopefully these things will be corrected soon before the final release.
