Fonts, usability, widgets ... Oh my!

May 21, 2010 · by Ruari Ødegaard

Here is a nice shiny new build. It is particularly interesting for our Linux and FreeBSD users in that it contains a several nice *nix fixes, including crash and freeze fixes, fixes that improve usability, fixes to widgets and three font bugs are fixed. (Yes, we know it hasn't fixed all the font issues yet!P: )

In addition we have fixed a cross platform issue with the reload menu and done some Windows widgets fixes.

Enjoy the build and the weekend! :D

UNIX Known Issues
  • Java is not working
  • IME is not working
  • Some font issues remain

WARNING: This is a development snapshot with the latest changes. It may contain severe bugs and cause data loss. Or it may be all you have ever wanted.

Does it contain WebM support, or is it a backwards step from the Labs Release in that respect?

please excuse me for being a bit off-topic, but can anybody "direct/instruct" a linux n00bie to get this to work on the latest distro of Puppy Linux (btw yes i googled, i did get the .pet packages for Opera 10.10 Final build from the official repositories but never got around to get the snapshots to work)

No need to apologise, everyone is new once!

We don't provide native .pet packages ourselves. You could repackage but if you are new as you say this would be a little involved and isn't strictly needed. If you want to install, from a terminal window issue the following commands:

    This downloads Opera:
    wget http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-6340/opera-10.54-6340.i386.linux.tar.gz

    This unpacks Opera:
    tar xf opera-10.54-6340.i386.linux.tar.gz

    This starts the install script:
    opera-10.54-6340.i386.linux/install

Just follow it step by step and you'll be fine. If you have Opera 10.10 Final installed at the moment and want to run the snapshot alongside then you will need to provide a suffix. I would suggest the suffix snapshot

If you just want to run in place view the README file.

The UNIX forums are the best place to ask for help if you run into any issues.
  • Vygantas21. May 2010, 16:05

Does it fix address bar anomalies?

Where you have to be very precise on "mouse overing" specific urls, otherwise it just opens wrong one.

Works if you save the gstreamer folder in the Program Files before uninstall the Labs build and overwrite after install this build.

I have a bug. For example, if I start transferring the Windows MSI file posted above and then click again on the same link while the first file in transferring, I get a transfer dialog but with the Open and Save buttons grayed. Only the Help button is clickable.
Also, this happens several times with several other files. Almost every file that now I try to transfer, the Open and Save buttons are gray.
    Windows XP SP3.

Flash STILL does not work on OpenSUSE! I am not the only one reporting this but it is seemingly being ignored.

If this is not fixed by the time a final is released I will dump Opera permanently which is a shame because I prefer it over Firefox but at least Flash works with Firefox.
  • Rui Costa21. May 2010, 16:41

Opera bug DSK-299391 still not fixed

Fonts are much closer to 10.10. Howevere some fonts are narrow and have uneven thickness still as in the below screenshot.

It is not ignored we just don't see the issue on our openSUSE test machines or internal users who run openSUSE. Check if you have NSPluginWrapper installed. If yes disable npwrapper.libflashplayer.so as per the instructions on http://my.opera.com/ruario/blog/problems-with-nspluginwrapper-and-flash-on-64bit

I noticed that this 3394 build has +500 points ("social networking" and "text parsing" values are increased) in peacekeeper test versus previous 3390 build. Anyone confirm?
  • João David21. May 2010, 16:58

In the About screen, the build is 21868. Is it me, or shouldn't it say instead 3394?

You have to uninstall the Labs build before install this build.
Due to higher build number the installer doesn't overwrite the previous version.

well now we know it is not! thank you for replying! how were we supposed to know if no one addressed us/the problem?
i do not have nspluginwrapper installed because it specifically states on flash/linux/64bit page that nspluginwrapper is no longer needed with 64bit flash and should not be used. (flash with firefox works without nspluginwrapper installed).

problem still exists with this build.

Use the Classic Installer, then you can run several builds alongside each other.

If there is no link to this Opera build in the 'Internet' menu you can always start it from the terminal when you want to run it.

Assuming you took my suggestion and used snapshot as a suffix, you could start it with:
    opera-snapshot &
(If you used a different suffix, then adjust accordingly).

If you used no suffix then:
    opera &

P.S. If you want to uninstall then either issue the command 'uninstall-opera-snapshot' (where snapshot represents the suffix you selected) or just 'uninstall-opera' if you didn't use a suffix.

Can I remind everyone to mention your OS and OS version when discussing issues and in the case of Linux, your distro and distro version.

  • derekn21. May 2010, 17:24

I'm still seeing the problem on Linux where opening a URL remotely ("opera -newtab www.opera.com") always chooses the bottom-most window. Earlier 10.5x snapshots used the top window. Is this an intentional change? The old behavior (open in the top window) was much nicer.
  • vpx21. May 2010, 17:24

All this wait and only 3 Windows fixes? C'mon Opera you're slowing down. :frown:
