Make your Speed Dial look great with Opera Barracuda

April 12, 2011 · by Huib Kleinhout

Opera 11.10 aka Barracuda has been released today. With the new, more flexible Speed Dial your favorite sites are better looking than ever. Speed Dial automatically uses website logos and lets Web developers make content tailored for speed dial. And in Opera 11.10 you can add as many sites to Speed Dial as you like.

Opera Barracuda features a fresh version of Opera's rendering engine: Presto 2.8.131 with support for WebP, CSS and gradient and a bunch of other enhancements. Opera's Turbo has gotten a boost as well and gives (even) faster loading times and better image quality.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with testing and giving feedback. If you've installed Opera 11 RC 4.1 then you already have Opera 11.10 final. :-)

By the way, in addition to finalizing Opera 11.10, we've also just announced the public beta of our brand new mail service, My Opera Mail . Read more about it in the mailteam blog!

what's the build? same as latest rc4?
  • crash112. April 2011, 06:16

High memory consumption caused by speeddial
Very high memory consumption started with first RC (b2081), caused by speeddial and present in all new builds. For example: installing clean opera 11.10 b2079, adding 22 speeddial items, restart opera with homepage = speeddial, memory usage - 65-70MB. Uninstalling. installing 1st RC 11.10 b2081, adding 22 speeddial items, restart opera with homepage = speeddial, memory usage - 105-110MB. 1 new speeddial item use aprox 5 MB of RAM. acceptable count of speeddial items is 5-6, not more... it's must be a fixed.
    PS WinXP Pro SP3 total RAM size: 1st PC 1024M; 2nd PC 2G; 3rd PC 4G; 4 PC - 512 M

Automatic upgrade from final 11.01 (build 1190, no extensions, no widgets, no userjs/css) to final 11.10 (build 2092) results in speeddial items having 4:3 ratio on a 1280x800 resolution (setup as 5 columns, auto sizing, hidden plus, 5x4 items). Can anyone confirm?
  • nahtanoj99912. April 2011, 06:37

This release crashed when I updated. I wouldn't stay open for more than a second with my session. It eventually deleted my session, which is really annoying.
  • YaroslavKa12. April 2011, 06:38

    Finally yes
  • sabisan12. April 2011, 06:38

Since last few builds I can't (!) check StartUp-dialog checkBox:
    - Start Unite and extensions (etc.)

I did clean install (11.10) 5 minutes ago (installed my favourite extensions) but still - checkBox is disabled.

Can this be configured in opera:config or somewhere else ?

EDIT: I uninstalled (+deleted private data) and reinstalled (+restarted Win) 11.10 but still the same problem (checkBox is always disabled) worried

    Win7x64

EDIT2: Privacy settings for extensions (after I re-enable them every time) are lost when I close and re-run Opera right

Also, there are some problems. First is that speed dial no longer shows the number of a speed dial. Second, there is no way to disable to automatic image zoom, which gets really annoying. Third, the speed dial sizer doesn't use all available space well with only 6 speed dials, making the thumbnails a lot smaller than they could be.

  • OLokLiR12. April 2011, 06:50

    Nice work developers!

But I'm very dissapointed because you missed some important translations at Speed Dial!

I already commented you left some words not translated in RC4.1. But you didn't fixed it... and you released standard version... it's very dissapointing...

Pay attention to the localization please. Korean Opera users are increasing nowdays!

I feel I can't recommend new version of Opera to my country's people due to the lack of translation. cry It seems Opera developers does not care of us...
  • GeoffChesshire12. April 2011, 06:51

After upgrading from 11.01 to 11.10, I have trouble starting Opera on a slow machine (running Ubuntu on a flash drive with ext4 partitions). There seems to be a race condition between the various processes started by Opera, such that after the .opera/lock file is created I get a bogus warning about another instance of Opera already running. Even if I ignore the warning, Opera quits anyway. I think lock-files might not be the best mechanism, especially with ext4.
  • mutley9021012. April 2011, 06:54

Thanx for the release but pleaze fix the speed dial area so i can see them all on one page rather than having to scroll down to the bottom. It was great a couple of betas ago..
  • Mimi's Mum12. April 2011, 06:54

Thank you very much for your hard work. up

Now time for some well earned break for you, I hope. Don't work to hard. Get out and smell the spring flowers. smile
  • ersi12. April 2011, 06:55

Using it as a non-admin user: the new speed dial adds some marketing bookmarks. The entire speed dial itself is unconfigurable - the menu options to the dialog are greyed out.
  • Klemen12. April 2011, 06:56

Fully agree, it's a very nasty regression from Opera 11.01. Also, give the man back his speed dial numbers. Other than that, pretty good job with this release.
  • ClashCityRocker12. April 2011, 07:00

Release notes stil have the work beta in them! Whoops...

    http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/windows/1110/

Opera 11.10 beta uses "Barracuda" as its code name.

Opera 11.10 beta uses the new Opera Presto 2.8 rendering engine as identified in its user agent string.

I've been testing the RCs on a USB drive, and while I still have a few quibbles (Speed Dial's auto-zoom really ought to go below 50%), I like 11.10 enough to finally upgrade my main installation, which is still stuck at 10.63. Can I install 11.10 over the old version and expect to retain everything? I know from experimenting with the RCs that I'll have to manually change my skin.ini (to account for Tab Stacking). Anything else? Notes, Wand, settings?
  • draco12. April 2011, 07:04

"Opera now recognizes the special way in which Gmail duplicates messages that appear in the 'All Mail'(...)"

No it's not fully fixed, it still sometimes duplicate messages (especially sending from one gapps to second gapps) and still sometimes shows 2 message count on account bar while in main received folder is only 1 message, whatever installation, upgrade or clean usb.
  • Tomis12. April 2011, 07:09

    Can anyone confirm this bug?

    1. Windows XP SP3
    2. A lot of tabs open. (I don't know if this is related to the issue)
    3. Open a new tab (speed dial screen)
    4. Type something in the address bar or search field.
    5. Switch to another tab.
    6. Switch back to speed dial.

Whatever you typed in at step 4 should be gone.
  • Kilo12. April 2011, 07:11

Thanks... can I disable this speeddial thumbnail random need to reload all of the tumbnails? I have installed 3.10 final into its own folder... manually re-created my speeddials (58 of them, url copied from 11.01 and pasted into 11.10) - thumbnails are created OK. However... I restart Opera and then, without any pattern, it wants to re-load all the speeddials, it takes forever and it has done this twice already. None of the speeddials are set to reload at all.

I am sitting with speeddial tab open waiting and Opera 3.10 is using 456.5MB or RAM

    http://i0.simplest-image-hosting.net/168bf183b2abe8bc9188aacc163dd507/opera-ram.jpg

Can I disable this speeddial reload ?

EDIT: Valiant effort, but I cannot adjust to the new speeddial - Opera is unusable with it... relying on faithful 11.01. Looking forward to next snapshot.

My speeddial looks ugly with 2 last Opera versions.
    http://simplest-image-hosting.net/png-0-speeddial0
  • adamthirnis12. April 2011, 07:26

    Won't be upgrading. Here's why:

I have as many as 50+ thumbnails - they don't fit inside the screen as they did in the old dial - forcing a scroll which defeats the object of "speed" dial.

When a thumbnail is deleted it used to be replace by a blank one - now all the other thumbnails shift up a space losing orientation.

The thumbnails look ugly and I have to manually set "refresh every" for all of them.

"in Opera 11.10 you can add as many sites to Speed Dial as you like." - you always could through the .ini file - something that could have been added to the config dialogue.

Hiding the "+" thumbnail changes the size and shape of all the other thumbnails.

Adding more columns through opera:config forces columns on the right off the screen and they can't even be accessed.

Significant regression for my uses - and I now prefer the dials offered by the extensions to Chromium and Firefox.

As long as you have "View button on mail toolbar above message list -> show -> show hidden" unchecked for a view, Opera will only show messages from "[Gmail]/All Mail" (and "[Gmail]/Trash", "[Gmail]/Sent" and "[Gmail]/Spam" depending on the other show settings). If there are duplicates in "[Gmail]/All Mail", this fix isn't supposed to do anything about that.

There could be a bug somewhere though. Would need exact steps to reproduce. And note that Opera said that the fix is only a first step.

As for the message count, remember that Opera shows the count of all the messages that are in the view, not just the ones that are shown. So, if there are 2 messages in "All Messages/Received" and one is hidden, the count will still be 2.

I would just like the chime in and complain a bit about the new speed dial. I have a fair number of sites from various internal work sites added to speed dial. After the upgrade to 11.10, my speed dial looks like this:

    http://simplest-image-hosting.net/png-0-fantastic-speed-dial

Please allow me to turn off the automatic image selection for the speed dial entries. I would much prefer to be able to view a miniature copy of the entire site, like in the previous version of speed dial. Otherwise, most of my entries look identical and the only way to tell them apart is by the caption, which defeats the purpose of having a speed dial.

BUG: Lines on images when loading a page and zoom is set to a value greater than 100% (e.g. 200%).
  • Sig Weber12. April 2011, 07:52

    Congratulations!

Opera 11.10 is the only the Web browser out there with full HTML5 forms support!

Also thanks for implementing CSS background image gradient support and the File API. I've been begging for those since Opera 10.0.

Last but not least, thanks for fixing that nagging NOSCRIPT HTML element bug intruduced in Opera 11.0

Great job! Keep up that good work!

I've just switched from Chromium to Opera.

Looking forward to see a desktop notification API implementation like the one in current Webkit browsers showing up in Opera 11.5 ;-)

Thanks for the new build guys smile much appreciated...

Feels good and much more stable than previous releases although it did crash when entering yahoo mail and on reload of previous tabs, opened the wrong sites... Also my https://www.halifax-online.co.uk/ still isn't secure (no golden lock) on my Ubuntu setup...

Here's for the next new Opera 11.20 release and hope for Hardware Acceleration and a Bug overhaul... Let's reclaim the stability trophy...
  • Aleksandar Lekov12. April 2011, 08:06

Hey, how do I hide the speed dial?? There used to be a button for this in previous versions and now it's gone!
  • spyk12. April 2011, 08:11

Great work guys! greetings from Greece
  • Vlad12. April 2011, 08:15

    Great job! Congrats!

Icons on a personalbar still disappear randomly, and this annoying bug smears the gladness of new release.
Please, consider fixing it, or at least mention it in "Known Issues" ― this will prevent users from duplicating bug-reports.

    Thanks!
