New Opera 11 snapshot: Extensions fixes, smaller winstaller, and *nix work

November 2, 2010 · by Blazej Kazmierczak

Hi, we are working hard on making our new extensions feature better, more functional and more stable. This build is the result of more than a week of our work on extensions, and also contains a small Unite surprise, fixes for the new Windows installer, and a nice set of *nix bug fixes.

From now on, Unite Application will no longer be delivered with the browser installer. Instead, they will be downloaded when launched for the first time. This noticeably reduces the installer size.

There's a new feature which involves an autoupdate feature for Opera Extensions and Unite Applications as well. It is not fully functional yet, as we are still working over server farm configuration.

Attention Extension Developers! Here's something you were definitely waiting for. You don't need to pack and install your extension every time you want to just test it. Now you can simply drag&drop your config.xml onto the browser for a quick preview.

Known issues

Extensions:
  • DSK-317511 (DEP information displayed during Opera startup on Windows)
  • DSK-316707 (Opera crashes when sufing pages while Ubiquity extension is installed when Open All Popups is enabled)
  • DSK-317493 (Opera process isn't closed after running Web Storage quota extension and shutting down browser)
  • DSK-316682 (Ensure that the extension toolbar is visible)
  • DSK-315418 (Not possible to move extension button)
  • DSK-315232 (Extensions pop-up windows are transparent when loading)
  • DSK-316102 (User JS not loaded when page loads too fast)
  • CORE-33382 (User JS code not run in extensions if page does not include a script tag)
  • CORE-33775 (User JS extensions don't run on HTTPS sites)

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

When I heard about it being the most popular feature, guessed it should be hardware acceleration...
At least in twitter it was the most popular by far.

Crashes a lot on "Insecure Third Party Module"

A third party application that is not compatible with the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) security feature has tried to attach to Opera. This application poses a security risk, so it is strongly recommended that you update it, or remove the application if no fix is available. The incompatible module was:
    unknown

Crashes on minimizing on Win 7 taskbar and then maximizing the Opera windows.

nanana1. I got that error just now but I had done nothing but upgraded (super fast!) and opened Opera. It had my previous tabs opened and that error popped up (including the "unknown" incompatible module) but Opera didn't crash and I'm now typing this in the session it appeared in.

"From now on, Unite Application will no longer be delivered with the browser installer."

Does that mean when I install this over previous alpha version and if I want to start a unite service (installed in alpha version), will I be prompted to download the unite app?
  • Heiko Becker2. November 2010, 11:29

just crash after minimize to taskbar and reopen -> ctd

    vista 64

is an upgrade over 1029 and therefor 10.70 and down.

just a downgrade to 1029 and no crash.
  • Hokkut2. November 2010, 11:29

Opera 2-3 times in second send this:
    [13:21] Opera.exe - 74.125.39.109:993 open
    [13:21] Opera.exe - 74.125.39.109:993 close, 448 bytes sent, 2058 bytes (2.00 KB) received
and standing the connection speed ~2kb/sec in idle

what this? is this from some extension or from Opera browser? I don't seen this before on Opera 10 or seen but not too often (not remember exactly)

DSK-311921 (Not all colors are changed when changing color setting under KDE)

That fixed the toolbar color bug reported in DSK-301435 *but* reintroduced a font color issue in the bookmarks bar:

Why do I get "Warning: The Opera Extension you selected is not in a secure location" when trying to install extensions from the extension site?
  • eonblue2. November 2010, 11:46

  • shaneh2. November 2010, 11:47

So the "guess the new feature" was auto-update for extensions? Or is it not out yet?

Also a regression: middle-clicking on links seems to scroll the page down with every click which is a bit annoying. (EDIT: when middle clicking links in reddit. Doesn't seem to occur on other pages)

Most probably your gmail account's periodic check for incomming mail from M2(ip relates to google, 993 port is usually ssl+imap). :)

Installer does not check for open widgets, you get an error about not being able to replace opera.dll

This should be listed in the known issues really, it's quite important.

    Presto/2.7.38 ???

Last week we were on Presto 2.6!!! Methinks there might be some hardware acceleration in this build, perhaps disabled by default, or it's a build from the Hardware Accel branch...
