Ook! I'm Dustin Wilson, and I'm a user experience designer for desktop here at Opera. You've probably seen my lurking around here before. I've been with the My Opera community since 2003, and I've been quite a vocal supporter of Opera. I just started working here on the 11th of January, and shortly thereafter I flew out to Oslo to meet and work with everyone. It's been extremely cold and dark, but great. I'm working with a great team, and we have a lot of awesome stuff planned. Fortunately for you all there are some nice design changes coming up! Stay tuned!
Why am I writing this post, then? They just needed ascapegoat person to write an intro to this Opera Next snapshot, and I was readily available and willing to do so. I'm perfectly sure this build contains many worthwhile changes! Have fun testing the build.

As for the snapshot, a first impression is that the panel edge toggle still does not work and , at least for me, this is a big enough usability issue.
First things first, but I'll be testing this snapshot further for UserJS issues that's been bugging me in previous builds.

Is it possible to have it totally working back?

Can we at least get semi official answer if this is temporary regression or intended "feature"? ;-)

not fixed
DeithriandeithrianWednesday, February 1, 2012 5:57:43 PM
It took me only two minutes to type in my username and pass at the login screen.
And Google+ loads in only 55 seconds!
A new tab gets created for only 5 seconds and switching between tabs takes 3 seconds!
Great job on the CPU usage too! Now Opera uses only 98% of my dual core!
I'm just amazed how do you guys do it
Oh and scrolling! Scrolling is a breeze now! Only half a minute to reach the bottom of the comments here! Great job!
Congrats!

I love you! Thanks. It's nice to know you are listening.
Hardware acceleration is rather sluggish on this build and the prior one as well. The UI is dramatically faster with HW acceleration disabled.
Windows 7 x64, Nvidia GT430, latest stable drivers (also tried the lastest Nvidia beta drivers too.)

edit: Cancel that, I just started Opera with Javascript turned off. Still, extensions should work after disabling the Javascript...

Plugins on Demand seem to be blocking certain authenticated pages again and still load flash in the background instead of WAITING until it's clicked... This one's a doozy...
Ubuntu 11.10 w/t Nvidia Ion2 and Adobe Flash 11.2 beta 3... funny thing is, the opera labs with OOPP works fine...

This was a problem for many with the previous build and should be mentioned as a known issue since it has not been addressed.

So I've also tested with clean install and this is what I found out:
It keeps focus on the address field only when I don't remove search field (which I do since I don't need it). When the search field is removed, Opera stil loses focus on the address field after starting with extensions buttons present.
Please, work on it a bit more!

When hovering the mouse above that button (New tab button), the button and the Opera menu button move down.
Strange bug.

They fixed the major issues before it was released, but I don't think it was ever perfectly fixed.I still notice a lot of flash videos jittering when you scroll down a webpage, and some flash content persists briefly when closing a tab. However, this doesn't happen with all websites with flash videos or flash content, and I haven't noticed any pattern. One page that always has the issue is TSN's Ice Chips. The team logos always remain briefly after closing the tab.
I'd assume it is a known issue since it is fairly obvious, but perhaps it is a difficult fix or maybe it's something that will be fixed when they have out of process plug-ins, so they are just putting it on the back-burner for now.

When I start to enter someting in the search field, the drop down menu covers the field. See <www.edbjay.com/search_field_blocked.jpg>.

Nice improvements with this snapshot.
The smarter suggestiions are welcome.
Please consider adding an "extended" drop-down mode. My Opera viewport is sized on my MBP display down to the bottom, to 1050 px. Currently, the suggest drop-down sometimes says "Show 4 more" at the bottom of the list. Maybe have the list dynamically size to 75% or 90% of the viewport. Requiring a click to show 4 more results is wasted user action, I think.
Semi-related: The addr bar drop-down could be show more results in Opera for iPad, also.

I've never noticed that before, but I can reproduce it.However, that's not what I meant by jittering. For example, notice on this page there is an embedded YouTube video. When you scroll the page, the video, whether it is playing or not, jitters (or maybe shakes is a better word). As it shakes you can see white appear along the border of the flash element. Also, when you close the tab, the video element will persist for a few seconds after the rest of the page disappears.
I'm not entirely sure this only happens with Opera, though. When you scroll with IE9 the video sort of shakes a bit too, however it isn't as obvious since no white appears as the video scrolls. Also the flash element doesn't remain when you close the tab like it does in Opera.
