Opera 11.51 released

August 30, 2011 · by olli

Hei All
We just released 11.51 (b1087) with one security issue fixed and with several stability fixes.

We have also added Mac Lion fullscreen support :-)

See changelog here:

Windows
Mac
Linux

This security update comes right after the Diginotar certificate breach, but Opera does not require a fix for this issue. Opera always verifies that certificates are not revoked, and unlike other browsers Opera does not display sites as secure if access to revocation servers has been blocked by an attacker. Read more about this issue on the Security Group blog.

We wish to thank you all for contributing with testing of 11.51 and will soon be back with more Opera 12 builds for you to play with.

    Thankyou very much.

Proudly announcing Opera is the first browser (excluding Safari as it's developed by Apple AND SO IS MAC OS X) to have some support for Mac OS X Lion in a Stable release.

EDIT: I cannot update to Opera 11.51 using Opera menu > Help > Check for Updates in Opera 11.50.

Error: An error occured during download (could not validate file).
Unfortunately, we are not able to recover from this error automatically.

Even if you use the "standalone installation" option in the installer to install to a folder on your desktop?

    Have an old cpu?
  • robe-nangaWednesday, August 31, 2011 9:30:35 AM

Hmmm weird. I don't know if this is because of the update or because facebook update it's user interface, but now when I put a link on the "status update" field it doesn't automatically recognizes it as such and ads the preview to the post. It appears to work well with internet explorer.

You didn't answer the critical question, does it crash when you do a USB installation?

if it doesn't then there is nothing wrong with Opera, it's your Opera profile that's corrupt, and anyone testing snapshots should be fully proficient on how to troubleshoot and fix corrupted profiles, as snapshot releases could do all sorts of weird damage.
  • Roberto BeccherleRobyBWednesday, August 31, 2011 10:02:31 AM

On Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 running Opera 10.50 if i try to update i get the message that i am already running latest version (11.50).

    where's my opera 12 snapshot??? :-/
  • Simon v. SchmudejantusWednesday, August 31, 2011 10:14:37 AM

the "standalone installation" isn't crashing at start-up
  • Martin RauscherHades32Wednesday, August 31, 2011 10:19:17 AM

Does this mean that when revocation servers are blocked, EVERY connection will be displayed as insecure?

I think I found the reason. There is no autoupdate folder here-

    ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1151

Like in previous versions for example Opera 11.50, the autoupdate folder must be there-

    ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/1150/

The same error here on Windows 7 x64, standalone installation.

Also, 5 more ad speeddial thumbs showed up after I upgraded manually. It wasn't like that before, was it?
  • PetruspetrusWednesday, August 31, 2011 10:45:26 AM

What about disappearing scroll bars? As far as I have understood Apple has not released an API for this feature, but the latest chrome dev has both bounce (which sucks) and disappearing scroll bars, so it's not impossible.

Oh, and would you please consider taking after chrome on their OSX GUI, it looks so much better than opera, it looks like opera on windows. I dont get why opera has to have such a fat tab bar, when chrome shows that it doesn't have to be on OSX.

I love opera on Windows, but chrome is getting better and better on OSX, and I've actually started using it more and more because of it's nice gui and stability.

Every other browser has copied features from you at one point or another in time, so it wouldn't hurt if you took after chrome on this one.

Also, chromes tab expose is the shit, activate tab preview in about:flags and drag three fingers down on S-L (broken on lion) or cmd + ctrl + t.

I'd really like to se opera being more popular on OSX, but with the current user interface it doesn't really look very appealing. Which is rather sad considering that opera has always looked great on windows compared to its competitors.

Close down Opera and delete autosave.win (or other session files if you start with a certain session) in the sessions folder. If that doesn't work, rename operaprefs.ini so Opera creates a new one. If Opera starts then, the problem is probably with operaprefs.ini. If that doesn't help, delete the toolbars.ini file in the toolbars folder. If that doesn't help, delete the widgets folder (located in the local profile folder). You can also delete the cache, opcache and temporary_downloads folders.

Or, if you use mail, maybe it's with the mail folder. You can rename it while Opera is closed. Opera will then create a new one when it starts up. If Opera doesn't crash, it's probably a problem with the mail folder in which you could follow this (importing from the folder you renamed).

"Dialog Toolkit" settings on Linux RHEL 5.6 is broken after update, no native widgets anymore. This is surely not only a stability or security release only, so please why do you release it as such? Or why such "UI fixes" are going into security/stability bugfix releases?
I would fire the release manager... furious

It is not a problem with Opera, facebook changed the design again, i get the same status update in IE8 as in Opera

It's not a platform specific issue. Any OS running Opera is affected so stop it's no use mentioning your OS.

Olli, we need help for this confirmed issue-

"Cannot update to Opera 11.51 using Opera menu > Help > Check for Updates in Opera 11.50.

Error: An error occured during download (could not validate file).
Unfortunately, we are not able to recover from this error automatically."

Oh, and where were you sleeping when Opera gave us 2 RCs to test Opera 11.51.

    @Galaad2
    http://webtv.realitatea.net/live?international=1

For me this site works fine, also its player, no freezing. Opera 11.51 build 1087, windows 7 x64 sp1 enterprise. Only difference may be that i have installed latest flash player 11 beta 2. Have you tried to clean flash's cache through control panel applet?

I can confirm bug with autoupdate from 11.50. I tried at my customer's laptop to automatically update 11.50 to 11.51 but i get an error "An error occurred during download (could not validate file). Unfortunately, we are not able to recover from this error automatically." My customer's laptop is working under windows xp home edition sp3. Of course updated browser manually.

can you please focus in the next version on the two fingers swipe for going backwards and forward? i believe it's quite important...
  • SafetyCarWednesday, August 31, 2011 11:43:05 AM

But, are the security issues still present on 12?
  • Jonathan Lermitagegros_biduleWednesday, August 31, 2011 12:08:56 PM

Update still adds entries in the bookmarks (under the "Opera" folder : bookmarks for AVG, etc).
    Why ?
  • WadeWednesday, August 31, 2011 1:05:55 PM

close button still in right side of tab & no easy way of change this, also exporting bookmarks seem to create file without any extension so when trying to import the bookmarks file is not seen as opera bookmarks file.

    using mac 10.6.8

Sorry the first line has me a bit confused.
Is this the same as RC2?

What about two finger swipe on the mac (back an forth)? Would be cool if opera could get that first for non native browsers!!

Nice work guys, thanks for that! Good luck with 12 and hope some day all the bugs would go away.

Probably server-side issue fixed by opera, imo they replaced .exe file to proper one.

There are no UNIX specific changes so if it isn't working now it either stopped working due to some change your side or it is something about your profile. Test against a clean profile.

That and support for Mac OS X Lion Resume feature. Opera might be second browser (excluding Safari) to get these 2 Mac OS X Lion features. Chrome is adding support for Mac OS X Lion at a fast pace.
