Password Monster Vanquished by Heroic Developer

March 8, 2011 · by Daniel Aleksandersen

The dreaded Password Manager Muncher-Monster (who snuck into the last snapshot) was defeated in an office on the fifth floor at the Opera Software ASA Headquarters in Oslo, Norway a little under an hour ago. A heroic developer from the Norwegian browser vendor and connected technology innovator Opera Software went head to head against the beast in what can only be described as a heroic battle.

knight

The Desktop Quality Assurance of All Things That Can Possibly Go Wrong Department was relieved by this heroic act. The dreaded beast had ravished on the defenseless pioneering spirits that had ventured out to test the latest changes including severe bugs and data loss situations in the Opera desktop product.

The QA department notes that the big red warning urging the adventurous to back-up first is there for a good reason. “It’s important to back everything up, always.” says one passwordless QA.

Known issues

  • Readability.com and Instapaper.com bookmarklets not loading (accessing document in iframe appended from external script)
  • All the previous issues as we haven’t done any more bug fixing in this build

bug WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

If I'm right, the last snapshot caused password loss for some people, but now, that bug is defeated.

I hope the "magic bar" has disappeared.
  • Mike Manger8. March 2011, 17:44

keep seeing this bar (is it the Intranet toolbar?) come up after changing settings in the Preferences (e.g. proxy settings, but it seems to be any) then clicking OK.

Can replicate it by going to appearances shift+F12 -> toolbars -> Show hidden toolbars... -> click on the bar and select placement as bottom (or whatever - I don't remember setting this!) then clicking ok. Click on the close button then go to a settings page (ctrl+f12) change something and click ok again.

    Win7.

p.s. Cheers for fixing the pw manger!

AMAZINGLY, STILL cannot use the JCE Editor with ANY of the Opera 11.10 "Barracuda" builds. Using these builds, you cannot upload an image or edit HTML, as the pop-up in which to do so is blank.

Google Chrome, Chromium, and the FF beta13 work, EVEN IE9RC works. But not Opera Barracuda.

Can we get a fix for this please... cool

There is a very strange bug in this build that hasn't been there in the previous one:

    - All Speed Dial windows are set to reload "every second" (not my actual configuration)
    - Even if I change the setting manually to "15 minutes" or so, the problem returns after restarting.

This is very annoying since it costs a lot of bandwith.

    Also,...

    - Mouse panning works, but stops after scrolling for a second or so when Speed Dial goes crazy

Win 7 64bit - Can anyone confirm this?
  • Алексей8. March 2011, 18:09

    yes cheers up
    Win 7 x86 SP1

    Confirmed.

Happens to 4 of my 20 speed dials, problem reappears after restart. sherlock

    Win7x64

    Edit: Did'nt see the restart-part
  • Dr0N8. March 2011, 18:32

    @raphweng13
Have no problems with Speed Dial windows (all are set to Reload Every->Never)
Maybe, because they all were set to Never.
  • Kamalesh8. March 2011, 18:34

Clearly an epic "password data" confrontation with the good guys winning this time.

Speaking of which, there's another reputational battle going on at Apple's home page now. It's been tweaked so no links work in v11.01 or Barracuda. This is hurting downloads from the Mac App Store in the Comments section. Let's slay this one also, ASAP (with browser JS or a real fix).

    Confirmed (Win7 x64)

edit: Only if you set custom refresh period on a speed dial item.
  • bushtukker8. March 2011, 18:58

Hyves.nl not properly working. Can't open the friends-online list which is pretty annoying.

confirmed, but only 3 of them on my speeddial! I deleted them and make new ones...that was a mistake, because it´s hard to put them back in the right position if you have 55 speeddial windows doh

Everyone experiencing this 'til now is running on Win7x64, anyone running different OS able to confirm?
  • dovelove8. March 2011, 19:35

Thank God (or someone) I did NOT have password problems in last build.

I haven't seen this problem? or feature discussed yet pertaining to PDF files.

I have use browser back to view PDF's in Opera. I can see if Opera now is MEANT to NOT close PDF files when exited I could see that would be handy in some cases. TROUBLE is (I even rebooted) it doesn't ever release them or see that I still have these DUPLICATE open PDF files when I reload.

  • Charlie Clark8. March 2011, 19:44

Hooray for the brave knights of Norway!

Profile name still missing from the post - it helps to know this advance especially when preparing backups.

Luckily, though I've had a few scares with the dailies I haven't lost any data.

@Junyor - you're forgetting the third and half floor! ;-)
  • 1st SEA8. March 2011, 19:46

    How about memory leak?
When I leave opera running for few hours with few tabs opened, it eats up all available memory and freezes eventually.
  • Kamalesh8. March 2011, 19:51

Even though it was mentioned that HTML5 video was fixed a OSX couple builds ago, I can't get it to work after turning it ON at YouTube...seems to work at IA and Wikipedia, though. Hmm.

  • Stanley8. March 2011, 19:52

Only if they were set to reload in a certain interval. If set to none it seems to be respected.
  • John A. Bilicki III8. March 2011, 20:03

Seems that not all readers are aware of that very special day we have today in some European regions.

But tomorrow everything will be over, for sure. At least until November 11, 2011, 11:11 CET.

    Congrats on defeating the monster.

    XP SP3

Some passwords cannot be deleted in the password manager. Others can be deleted, but require closing and reopening of the manager in order to update.

Anyone confirm this behavior in this or the last snapshot?

    Edit:

I suspect you can't turn it on because of this.

Not at all. It's certainly much more plausible that the Opera HQ has expanded vertically since my last visit. wink
