Performance, Speed Dial enhancements, and bug fixes

May 7, 2010 · by Haavard

A new snapshot is ready for testing.

We have included a few things we have been working on, and that we are only adding to the main builds now. In addition to various bug fixes for mail, and cross-platform and Mac-specific bug fixes, we have tweaked DOM performance a bit. Please be on the lookout for regressions there.

There are also a few visual tweaks for Speed Dial, but you may have to do a clean install to get the new default background.

UNIX Known Issues
WARNING: This is a development snapshot with the latest changes. It may contain severe bugs and cause data loss. Or it may be all you have ever wanted.

(indeed nice speed dial, thank you Opera Team)

  • Nico7. May 2010, 16:50

I love the latest Speed Dial improvements, good job!

Small question: Where can I find the new default background? I don't want to do a clean install. Thanks a lot in advance!

Have a nice weekend and enjoy your Friday beer
  • Rafael Luik7. May 2010, 16:53

Hmm.. I think Speed Dial needs dragging and drop animation now.
DSK-295558 (Can't copy Notes) - thanks for that easy fix. :o:

this is the speed dial background: http://my.opera.com/chooseopera/blog/2010/04/27/a-new-speed-dial-background-for-your-new-opera-version
  • Patkos Csaba7. May 2010, 16:57

yep ... looks nice ... it's a little bit strange to see a blue background when Opera's colors are red and white ... but it's nice.

    No Unix fixes? Nothing?

Also, there is no "known issues" entry in the blog post.

You don't need to do a clean install, all you need to do to have the new Speed Dial default background is to enable the background image option and let the selection field clear.
  • slysithesuperspy7. May 2010, 16:58

I haven't downloaded it yet a but a "Open All" button would be great for the speed dial. I get a bit tired of ctrl+shift clicking the 25 icons to open background tabs everytime I get into the browser
  • A.Ruzanov7. May 2010, 16:59

HTML/MHTML files with non-ascii characters in path don't open when Opera is default browser and already running

    Finally it was fixed

You could use a bookmark folder to open 25 websites with one click...
Are you (at least) middle-clicking the Speed Dials?
I can't imagine myself creating 25 new tabs using new tab button and clicking in one of the Speed Dials on each. P:

Fastest Opera so far and nice changelog, thanks!:hat:
  • Florin Iacob7. May 2010, 17:05

Works well so far, no new problems from me.

But I have to mention this: Will you ever fix the 'Start Bar' on (Windows XP) Native Skin?

  • Tamil7. May 2010, 17:05

Content is duplicated in defaults\public_domains.dat file.

Small custom Speed Dial thumbnails are stretched to fit and looks ugly. :frown:
  • Savageman7. May 2010, 17:07

DSK-295546 (Mouse wheel doesn't work in popup window)
Yeay, I was waiting for this one, thanks!
  • DrillSarge7. May 2010, 17:08

Speed Dial looks a bit strange with size of 5x5. The page preview thumbnails are displayed in a "widescreen" format, but the "box" (what opera draws around these thumbs) is drawn in another aspect ratio and doesn't really fit. and its really unsharp. this:

Got some problems with Flash plugin - it's not working. Error message:
"opera: Plug-in 2010 is not responding. It will be closed.
opera: Define environment variable OPERA_KEEP_BLOCKED_PLUGIN to keep blocked plug-ins."

    Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 Linux.
  • zombie7. May 2010, 17:10

Weird stuff going on with Flash in this build. It is popping out if the containers, and position itself in the top left corner of the window.

    Linux Mint Gloria 64 bit.
  • Sardorbek7. May 2010, 17:11

 no UNIX Fixes ( and it is after all my bug reports
  • rseiler7. May 2010, 17:14

    Two questions:
    1) For those of us not up on our DOM, what would a regression look like?
    2) "Bookmarks lost on upgrade when using new format." New format? 10.5 introduced a new bookmark format?
  • Even Nedberg7. May 2010, 17:15

Java working in Linux version!
  • Mark Gillespie7. May 2010, 17:16

Hang on, where is everyone complaining their pet bugs are not fixed?
  • Rafael Luik7. May 2010, 17:16

The new Speed Dial default image appears in the screen when you recover a closed tab. That doesn't happens when the image is a custom one. bug
It's only *noticeable* if you are recovering a closed tab while your current tab isn't the Speed Dial itself of course.

Ubuntu 9.10 using DarkRoom theme. Text in most edit boxes is light orange and it's very hard to read...

For example see the address bar in the image below:

  • Robert907. May 2010, 17:34

The tooltips in the UNIX builds are of the wrong color. Opera shows yellow tooltips, while KDE (4.4) shows blue tooltips.

I just reported this as: DSK-298020. Priority is probably deep bellow sea-level, but it's still a inconsistency in the KDE integration.

Thx, but what's the difference from the previous versions on tabs resizing?
  • Jorge Enrique Aguayo7. May 2010, 17:40

I don't know whether this is a bug, but here it goes:

I tried to open a file stored in a local folder and it changed the url of the file name, causing it to fail to load properly:

    file://localhost/C:%5Csomefolder%5Csomepage.htm instead of
    file://localhost/C:/somefolder/somepage.htm

I'll be submitting an outstanding font bug on the other form.
  • OperaDrBruce7. May 2010, 17:41

One more bug. When I open new tab and double click for homepage (mouse gestures), nothing happens.:frown:

Yes, Java is working in Linux, but Flash is not working anymore.

Tried renaming the ~/.opera folder, same thing.
