Release Candidate for Opera 12 Beta

April 25, 2012 · by Haavard

This is a release candidate for the Opera 12 Beta.

Since this will be a launch of a beta version, you can of course expect more problems than a final version. Still, if you find any new issues that seem to be too serious even for a beta, let us know.

Known issues
  • No FreeBSD builds (yet)
  • Problems with dragging on Google Maps
  • 64-bit Windows build crashes when connecting to a POP account

”DSK-360316 Opera stops loading pages after a while […]“: hope that means to fix the ”Looking up hostname…“ issue – without that, no beta release!
  • BecDeXorbinWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:24:38 PM

Mod edit: Please be specific when reporting problems.

    Testing now.

The drag and drop bug still exist. Please, no! The first impression will be so very bad... Unable to click a link if the cursor moves 1px it open in new tab.

    + letter spacing bug!!!
  • mrdWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:36:47 PM

Yeah it's a really good look using that and getting that DX text going backwards error on your launch page. Yeah.
  • Satan D. LucifersupertrolWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:37:08 PM

Was hoping "Opera Reader" would come 1st before beta so that im expecting after 12 beta they're just fixing the bugs until final
EDIT: the FAQS there explained when you 1st launched this build

    nice:up:

EDIT2: heres my opera:gpu page after enabling HWA and WebGL for people who are curious plus i notice HWA is Decelerating my system rather than Accelerating so i guess if 12 final comes i prefer it Disabled since vega (for me) is more fast than the current HWA opera has.

    Great, testing up.

EDIT: Opera's speed is still not good as it should be.
  • OlegYchWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:37:36 PM

how about fixing inability to access imap accounts with unverfied certificates?

Nice start page but it has a translation mistake (German):

Opera Next enthält in der Entwicklung befindliche Funktionen, die in einer zukünftigen stabilen Funktion veröffentlicht werden.

    Should be:
Opera Next enthält in der Entwicklung befindliche Funktionen, die in einer zukünftigen stabilen Version veröffentlicht werden.
  • Surferz WorldsurferzworldWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:43:43 PM

opera:gpu is now showing as HWA enabled. It was disabled by default earlier [DSK-362072] . However, we need to go some more leaps to reach the beta status, but, you brought it right-away. I'm looking for a stable and visual glitch free browser. Anyhow, Thanks for this build, testing now.

@Avola: Do these spacing issues appear with HWA disabled?
  • DanDaComboManWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:44:04 PM

Error message on installation (at least the last 4 versions):

    Still crash on open http://diretta.it
    Any confirm?
    (opera x64, w8cp x64, hwa off)
  • konicWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:44:35 PM

When are they going to fix bookmarks handling ? Cannot open sub-folders !
  • maexlWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:45:38 PM

Think "Problems with dragging on Google Maps" should have been solved before this release.

    But nevertheless --> testing! smile

java applets are broken - not able to receive user input

Can't confirm this on Win 7 32 bit
  • DayderDayWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:48:09 PM

still broken: open advanced configuration menu via CTRL+F12, click around some settings (you don't have to change something) and when you click OK, some pinned tabs have wrong size, see screenshot

    Opera x64, Win7 x64 Enterprise, HWA off
  • SteveKongWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:48:48 PM

[OS X 10.7.3] Unfortunately Opera Next still crashes on http://mozilla.github.com/pdf.js/web/viewer.html . As developer it's really hard to ensure Opera compatibility if the next Opera version just crashes on each load.

Edit: Crashes with completely clean profile, too.

Edit: DSK-362201 although there should be some automatic crash reports

Please add some more details - this seems to work fine here, and I haven't seen others complaining about this.
  • OlegYchWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:50:48 PM

the rendering of rss list is very slow http://www.screenr.com/EyM8

win7 sp1 x64, opera x86, no hw acceleration (as it's very slow on my 8600m gt)
  • GreunlisWednesday, April 25, 2012 12:50:49 PM

star"DSK-360316 Opera stops loading pages after a while, and "pure virtual method called" error on exit"up

I still, however, don't see the mail retrieval problem addressed in the changelog sad
Opera is my main (and only) e-mail client and without the mail function, I'd rather stick with the 11.62. Haven't been able to use Opera Next for several builds now. Even after clean install > import mail, the browser (win, 64 bit) crashes after just several seconds, if not right away.

Imagine this happening with the final build...

    Bug similar to DSK-362115
    1. Open youtube video
    2. Right click in browser window (video stops after few seconds)
    3. Left click(to hide context menu) - video resumes.

    Any confirmations from Mac/Linux?

    Windows 7 Ult x64. Opera 12.00 b1387 x64

    upd.

Problems with dragging on Google Maps

    not only Google Maps/
Any link or image opens in new tab. It's annoying

I agree with other. Need more focus on stability. Still a lot of bugs. Not at a beta stage yet
  • OlliOlli91Wednesday, April 25, 2012 12:55:52 PM

Hope this is not a feature freeze and we get Lion scrollbars in the beta phase!

I think with disabled HWA it's ok to go beta on Mac.
Edit: But we gotta do something about RAM usage, this is still dissatisfying! 600MB RAM usage while already having it limited to 100MB via settings is not acceptable! down

On Windows 7 pages are still not loading, and plugins are still not recognised. sad
  • Erik HauboldAltariusWednesday, April 25, 2012 1:00:34 PM

except these drag-n-drop problems (which should be fixed for beta) i currently see no other bugs here that could block a beta release.

for beta i wish a better otimization of the hwa-backends. as opera is slightly slower with it (well...no problem) but my laptop much hotter (big problem).

also i'd like a longer testing period, to reduce the number of bugs when finally releasing it, as there were way to much in the last releases.

    (my system: opensuse 12.1 x64)
  • Marco MaierschwiebieWednesday, April 25, 2012 1:04:43 PM

Still problems with printing and HWA.
    Not a known issue?

Also problems when dragging about anything on any web page or even the UI. That Known Issue with Google Maps is quite specific subset of the bigger problem.

The 64-bit POP problem is a show stopper to me personally. I mean, if I can't even boot the browser up to test any other features because it crashes when initializing the mail accounts, then what's the point? Of course I could use 32-bit build, but then there's this drag and drop annoyance that makes it impossible to use the browser efficiently.

And unfortunately I have to agree that this being release candidate for Beta release is too early. Seems like the history will repeat itself: Opera rushes to the releases with bad bugs all around. And then they wonder why their market share won't go up. Of course new release gets some hype and extra downloads, but if the impression is that it's buggy crashy app, the customers will just go to other browsers and might not even care about the next update where the issues are then finally addressed.

For Beta it's somewhat acceptable, people know that Beta release isn't supposed to be the most stable thing on Earth, but I don't think that these new shiny features they want to show off in the Beta are in the condition that they can take broader public review yet.

At least I hope that the known issues there now will be fixed for the actual Beta release.

Confirmed. Win 7 64, 64 bit build, HWA on. POP e-mail wasn't working at first, but started working after turning off WebGL. Will monitor. Text is still jumbled up on some sites too.

Finally no more list of tabs in Tools / Advanced menu. :-)
But still no zooming for TXT attachments (other than using mouse wheel).

Also I'm reminding about pretty visible lack of polish in KDE style integration for visible menu bar (wrong background)... It would be nice to have that fixed sometime, especially as it was possible to achieve mostly correct transition with hidden menu bar. ;-)

    Thanks!

Transparent tabs are very hard to read using some of the new themes.

A couple of websites freeze Opera. The first has done so for the last couple versions, the second is new to this snapshot:

    csnphilly.com
    nicholaspayton.wordpress.com
  • SteveKongWednesday, April 25, 2012 1:19:37 PM

All my Speed Dial entries got deleted from my link account after enabling Link in Opera Next. worried

Also Opera is still crashing on start with HWA enabled since DirectX was added. Because lot's of people have this problem (according to comments in the first DirectX build) I believe this is a showstopper:

    NVIDIA ION 2
    Intel Atom D525

    OK, here is video http://files.myopera.com/konic/files/BoomarksFolders.mp4
    I have this behavior on Win7 32 and 64.
    Try the following:
    1. go into folder.
    2. create new folder here. This is sub-folder.
    3. now try to go into this sub-folder by either double-click or press Enter.
One condition 'though: you have to be in 'Single Folder' view.
    ...
P.S. Video was recorded on 11.62, but behavior is EXACTLY the same on 12+.
It does NOT happen on 11.61 !?

Looks like Opera programmers were stuck on some problem for a long time, and now it has been fixed and development is going full speed again !

Is anyone using the latest v12 builds on a daily basis ? Is it usable for e-mail ?
