Speed Dial, now with crisp thumbnails

April 1, 2011 · by Michal Zajaczkowski

Hello from the Opera Wroclaw team,

This snapshot adds more fixes to the new Barracuda Speed Dial, taking away the need to reload all the Speed Dial items on each and every zoom level change. Opera will now cache your thumbnails in the biggest size needed and resize them as requested, adding necessary padding. The thumbnails for pages with the "view-mode: minimized" media type will change their rendering viewport width when zoomed above 100%, and keep a fixed viewport when zoomed below that. We hope this will make your thumbnails readable regardless of the Speed Dial zoom level.

The build brings also some improvements to thumbnail quality; your favorite pages should now be nice and sharp.

We haven't just been working on Speed Dial, though. There's a new Core upgrade, Windows installer fixes, numerous crash fixes, and more!

As usual, this is still work in progress, so we count on your feedback to inform us about any problems you might encounter with this build.

And remember, this is not an April Fools' Day joke:

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Known Issues

  • Upgrading from older Barracuda installations could cause Speed Dial thumbnail quality problems
  • My Opera community Speed Dial may not finish loading on a clean install

    Great changelog...testing smile

edit: Speeddial-thumbnails are looking very nice now and the zoomlevels can be used very well now with custom thumbnails!
Only remark: With this build the thumbnails are loading longer so the "progress-circle" appears at every startup.

I've got 4x4 speed dial on 17" LCD and the quality of thubnails is really bad sad

Also the wider speed dials was better with 4x4 speed dials. Now I've got lot's of space on the left and right
  • Muhammad-Ubaid raza1. April 2011, 16:37

Very nice build, speed dials looking great now, except

1-Some thumbnails are too sharp. For example Gmail.
2-When starting opera, speed dial thumbnail is not shown correct ( just some random colors)
3-Some website thumbnails are moved to top-left (Not centered))... For example
    www.google.com and mail.yahoo.com

Cannot resize speeddials thumbnails while reloading images. Stuck at 68%, however images appear much better now.

I'm used to resize window a lot so manual zoom is not an option for me.

it wouldn't help anyway, because I can't make speed dials wider with manual zoom p

The wider speeddials worked also better for me. Now they are squared and a lot smaller than before...
Besides, I like the new thumbnail quality smile

I'm not saying they are not looking good. With 5x4 speed dials they are even better. But with 4x4 there is just too much space on the left and right. There might be some "width" option bigsmile
  • ncc504461. April 2011, 16:52

Amazing changelog Opera! Keep up the wonderful job! The Speed Dial is turning out great smile
  • PraetorianX1. April 2011, 16:59

With 7 columns set in the speed dial and zooming for 100% or greater:
    1) the "Configure" button gets lost
    2) there is no horizontal scroll bar (middle click mouse panning does not work either), and
    3) for some reason the distance from the speed dial search field increases.

  • Moe Greene1. April 2011, 17:00

    1. The font used in the panels cannot be changed. Lucida Grande, size 12, is used no matter what font is selected in the preferences.

    2. Tooltips used by page tabs are initially rendered without background shadow.

    3. The text in tooltips used by e.g. panels is not redrawn when triggering a new tooltip while one is still visible.

    4. The background colour in the tooltips is grey instead of yellow which is the native tooltip colour.

  • João David1. April 2011, 17:03

Yeah, the speed dial's thumbnails do look amazing now, in terms of quality, but I also prefer the wider version I had before. They should respect the screen resolution width so that they won't waste screen space. Besides, they look better when wider.

Looks like a great changelog. When specifying to avoid upgrading over an old build, do you mean deleting the PREFS fiolder or not overwriting Opera.app file; or both? (OSX)
  • raphweng131. April 2011, 17:07

The actual problem I have with the last 3 builds is that Speed Dial actually is not very flexible anymore. Each 'dial'/ site-frame is strictly keeping it's height, so that the scroll-bar appears very often. This forces me to reduce the zoom level, an action which then causes more free space on the left and right. Here is a comparison of build 2076 (clean install) with two different settings and Safari 5:

    Windows 7, 64bit, 1366*768:

    - Opera 11.10 2076 with settings: automatic/ automatic (space wasted on the left and right): http://my.opera.com/raphweng/albums/showpic.dml?album=6655492&picture=101287122

    - Opera 11.10 2067 with manual 5 columns/ zoom: 90% (3rd row cut on the bottom): http://my.opera.com/raphweng/albums/showpic.dml?album=6655492&picture=101287152

    - Safari 5: http://my.opera.com/raphweng/albums/showpic.dml?album=6655492&picture=101287172

What one can see that, even if I have to accept two dials less in Safari, I see a much better use of the given space. This is because they neither have that border around each dial, nor do they have the titles at the bottom. Finally, the dials adjust in height.

  • highstream1. April 2011, 17:12

Known issues: "Upgrading from older Barracuda installations could cause Speed Dial thumbnail quality problems."

    What problems?

The thumbnails are cleaner, thank you. However, upgrading has left my 6x5, 5x5 of which which was visible with the last build at 80%, now partly off the screen at the bottom at 60%. And there is lots of spare room left and right (and some on top). The blue tinted background on the SD also continues here (but not on this page). Given your desire to change the SD, I'm not seeing how you can solve the configuration problems without adding user settings for rows and thumbnail size to the mix (a la FF's extension).

Update: after a page reload the thumbnails are fuzzy and, because of the necessary new zoom settings, smaller than before.

Speed Dial II Opera Link issue

When I remove one of speed dials, Opera Link removes it, but doesn't re-arrange all others dials.

Let's suppose I have 16 Speed Dials, now I removed dial #15, after Opera Link synchronization on https://my.opera.com/username/account/link/speeddial/ I can see empty box on place of SpeedDial number 15, My Opera doesn't rearrange all other dials after sync.

It seems like the memory leak with Gmail Video Chat adding 50Mb RAM usage at every page refresh has been fixed...

The memory leak with youtube video player (including embedded player), and some other flash elements, is still present:
    1. Open 10 tabs with youtube.com webpage.
    2. Watch increasing memory usage.

The bug annoys me because I always leave my PC turned on with Opera and a lot of tabs open... If some of those tabs have embedded youtube videos, I have unresponsive PC in the morning with huge swap-file and no available RAM...

Speed dial is broken after update from previous build. Thumbnail block is square, not rectangle, but image in the block is rectangle, leaving a lot of space after image, before the time. Also, with 7 columns auto zoom, speed dial page has scrollbars, and too much unused space on left and right.

One more issue with new Speed Dial, sometimes, Speed Dial's background becomes white instead of default blue-white-grey palette. The same things happens sometimes with other Opera's UI objects, such as address bar, for instance, when I try to clear all private data.
