Speed Dial shaping up even more

March 25, 2011 · by Wojciech Dzierżanowski

Greetings from a first-time poster!

Here comes another snapshot for you to test on the road to the Barracuda final. A lot has been said about the Speed Dial evolution since Barracuda got some teeth. While you shared your positive and negative impressions, we said there were many pieces to the puzzle.

And now the final pieces are starting to fall into place. The new flow layout of the Speed Dial is now enhanced with auto-zooming so that it fills up your window nicely. A beefed-up Speed Dial configuration dialog reacts to changes you make instantly. Oh, and for those of you who want to save every precious piece of your window, it has an option to hide the plus button, too.

Just in case you are led to believe the Speed Dial is the only thing that's been keeping us busy, I'm here to tell you it's... not! bigsmile We tweaked the skin to look cleaner and smoother, ensured that reordered Speed Dial cells are now synchronized correctly, and made other general improvements and fixes to Opera Link as well.

Known Issues

  • Speed Dials thumbnails are reloaded over the network every time the window is resized (rather than being generated from cache)
  • Upgrading from older Barracuda installations could cause Speed Dial layout problems

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

could you please fix the content blocker showing the plug-in placeholder (from on-demand plug-ins) instead of hiding the flash ads at all?

One or more of your extensions causes this. We know the issue and are testing a fix internally.

Awesome I thought you was finished improving Speedial & I love what you'd already done.

    Can't drag a tab/link/url into Speed Dial

    cheers
Would love an option to load a custom thumbnail from my hard drive or from My opera photo album.

Liking the new speed dial, but is there a way to make it not use Apple touch icons for speed dial previews? They're absolutely hideous when used in Speed Dial. I'd much rather have a thumbnail of the webpage rather than an icon there anyway, but if an icon is used I'd rather have an icon there designed for that purpose rather than shoehorned from another use.

scrolling up and down was not at all smooth in the previous snapshot, but it's a little smoother now and less distracting. still needs a bit more tweaking, i believe.

New speed dial reaches an acceptable level of usability (IMO)...

... now it can FINALLY do what the old one did! lol

works for me. Could you state your OS and also your Flash version (use opera:plugins to find out). Also compare against another browser on your system.
  • Gousti FruitGoustiFruitFriday, March 25, 2011 5:00:06 PM

Thumbnails are blurry even if not zoomed using arrow keys ! I set the "Zoom control" to "Automatic" and my new thumbnails are (slightly) blurry. Not a show-stopper but clearly the thumbnails are not as crisp as before.
  • elyonFriday, March 25, 2011 5:00:26 PM

Sometimes Facebook automatically scrolls you up to an old position on the page. Very annoying. Is it just Facebook messing up their Javascript?

Hardly surprising that you (and others) weren't entirely satisfied with the initial versions of Speed Dial in Barracuda as we are still developing it. We have yet to release final stable version of Barracuda. I think some people forget that and assume with every snapshot that this is it.

Click on the button in the URL bar, zoom button or configure in the speed dial. See how the drop shadow is now. Look at the default speed dial background. Also look at opera pages, particularly the error pages. Like the one if you go to a malicious site.

Enable "reload every", and it will show the actual page thumbnail (because we assume that if you set it to reload automatically, it's because you want to look for something on the page itself).

Thats very annoying, it happens on any resize, so every time you show or hide your side panel (F4) the thumbnails are regenerated :-(

Yes, that's why it's listed in the known issues. It isn't necessary to discuss the known issues list, because they are already known. Please allow people who have issues that may not be known already to have their say, too.

Don't take it too hard, Ruari... you may not have noticed my tongue-in-cheek LOL. While I certainly didn't like what Speed Dial was going through over the last couple of weeks, I expected it to be "fixed" in the end. I noticed some of my constructive criticism seemed to be taken the wrong way, though. sad

But it's looking good now, as I hoped it would! cheers

  • GregorWFriday, March 25, 2011 5:17:23 PM

    1. Speed dial is not centered vertically, but moved slightly towards the bottom.
    2. Speed dial numbers are no longer displayed, you now have to deduce them from their current position in the layout. For those who do not know, you can for example type "12" into the address bar to open the 12th site, keeping your hands on the keyboard.
    3. Speed dial borders used to have a nice transparent look.
    4. What's the point of that noisy blue-grey background? It's distracting and not easy on the eyes at all. Please default to the white window color.
  • Z1-AV69Friday, March 25, 2011 5:17:28 PM

Wow, that speeddial is like it should be, congratulations!

    Same here. Win XP

Another thing... sometimes I need to enable Opera turbo for the thumbnails to be refreshed, and it doesn't work all the time. I used to get a transparent empty box, now I get a white one in some of my thumbnails.

Also, some thumbnails are repeated in several boxes or the thumbnails are in the wrong box.

It's clear that a lot of work has gone into the latest SD. It's cleaner, column layout has improved and full screen thumbnails have returned. However, I think the configuration possibilities with FF's Speed Dial extension offer a better direction overall, with some additions. In particular (most important IMO):

    - allow for layout editing like PowerPoint slides, where blank thumbnails can be placed within and moving thumbnails is not an exchange
    - allow to choose #rows too
    - thumbnail height/width control (in pixels)
    - height/width controls (not just overall zoom)
    - 5% increments for zoom or make it a fill in

    Also,
    - No way to turn off the blue background in Speed Dial (or is that part of the change in skin?)
    - There is no close button or X in the configuration dialog box; instead, user has to figure out to click outside the box

    please SD support:
    – custom image for thumbnails
    – transparent background when add standalone icon (Standard Skin)

    Bugs:
    – custom image delete from mail label after restart from Opera.
    – DSK-328990 "Execute program" don't work under Linux
  • zoqueteFriday, March 25, 2011 5:29:44 PM

the shiny zoom thing in the bottom right corner does not work in speed dial, is it a bug?
  • odysseuscmFriday, March 25, 2011 5:30:23 PM

I think the Speed Dials's screenshot function needs something like a delay to deal with JavaScript actions.
Try http://www.lose-combo.de - it's impossible to get a complete preview including the slideshow image. Also, although the website is valid HTML, I only get a partial screenshot from http://www.hessische-theaterakademie.de and http://www.uni-giessen.de/theater and http://www.ensemble-modern.com - all of them but www.lose-combo.de render correctly in Speed Dial in Opera 10.01
