Time to try Unite again!

We have worked pretty hard on improving the server components of Unite lately and would like to invite everyone who has tried Unite before to give it another try now: We want more users on our proxies, preferably so many users that it gives our system administrators a headache

We need to test our systems under realistic conditions, and that means a lot of people downloading files, streaming music, sending messages, sharing photos.

So, please download the latest snapshot and play with Unite this weekend!

Since you're doing performance-related testing, should I fire up the botnet and give you some DDoS love? Just kidding... unless that's what you want. It is a possible scenario that you may have to deal with. Might not be pointless...

Hehe, trust me, we don't have to ask for DDoS, we get those without invitation What we want is a large number of people doing what they normally do - the type of testing you can't easily simulate in a lab (or with a botnet for that matter).

Why Opera sends request to the following addresses every minute even though Unite is disabled?

@Tamil: Because of UPnP service discovery. If you click the Unite icon in the status bar you will see "Discover Opera Unite users" and either "No users found" or a list of instances of Unite on your local network.

What else I would like to have at Unite?!

1. A specialized search engine based on the categories of services - music files, photos, movies, chat rooms ... this search engine to display all users that contain the file you are looking for - so you can choose from whom, what to download.

2. I would like to see all users who use this time Opera Unite - those who are online. That would be great!

Oh. This feature is why Opera has been wanting to receive a server connection by default. I haven't had Unite on. Should "Discover Opera Unite users" be on by default? The majority of Opera features are only activated when explicitly used.

Absolutely. Otherwise it would only be turned on by people who understand what Unite is. Now it can also lead people to discover Unite.

When I start playing a song, I get stuttering playback even with some more of the song already buffered. If I stop playback and immediately start it again on the same song, all is fine.

Argh, Unite is crashing my Opera on Ubuntu continuously. Probably 10 crashreports in a few hours.

So far works great. No disconnect from Unite server.

There's one thing from the beginning. When in Unite tab i double click house icon (there is my page name on it: "m....f @ home") i get "404 Not found" error. On address bar is:

Is that ok?

No crash or disconnection from Unite servers here (Opera 10.00.1691 - XP)

When the access control is set to limited "Limited: Limit access to only those with the full URL. Send your friends the URL above, which includes a unique password that you can edit." the url doesn't include the password.

I walked into your music folder!
When I log in under the music folder, the server automatically returns to me the previous folder. After a while it is fine.

When I hear music, not running buffer play-pause, does not change its state ... just freezes

My Upload speed is very little 80KB/s

I tryed it on my other pc and after a while it works fine, it just has to load every file, dunno.

I have to go in 20/30 minutes, but its been 1 hour that Unite is on and it hasn't crashed once, uploaded 80 MB now more o less. So i can say its working fine for me.

EDIT: Actually after 90 MB the proxy server is unreachable. Restarted Unite and working again now.

EDIT 2: After 150 MB upload it disconnected form proxy again.

My Opera is united broke once I send automatic reports. Already working on 2-3 hours and uploaded 270MB!

I know that removing home work, but problem is when i double click home icon i get address with /home/ and 404 error. It isn't ok i think.

I get one disconnect so far when my buddy tried to connect to my music folder.

So Far less glitchy, much more stable.

But if you run Media player service and try to play some music via Safari 4 the music don't stream

And please, could you add multitouch gestures for Mac build ?

I am using File Sharing and File Uploader to transfer files between my desktop and my laptop.
Both are in my LAN (desktop connected with 100Mbit/s ethernet cable to the router and laptop with wi-fi 54Mbit/s).
I cannot understand why sometimes the files are transferred at the LAN speed while other times they are limited at my outgoing connection speed (500Kbit/s ).
It seems the services can use both the fast direct connection and Unite proxy connection but I cannot figure out how it is decided and why it changes between different transfers without me modifying any setting!!

@Patatina: I can see a couple of reasons: 1 that you are unregistered for some reason, in which case it will not be possible to reach your page with another browser. Restart Opera and it should work again.

2 that there is an error in the API that tells My Opera who is online and what services they run. This time it should still be possible to reach your page with another browser.

hm.. the "Search for users on http://my.opera.com/"
on the _root page is not working for me
it returns:
"We did not find any user using "" as search term."
so the query gets lost somehow it seems

I'm not sure if this is the place to put up some suggestions but I'll try it here.

It would be mind-blowing if Opera Unite had a messenger function (compatible with multiple IM services, say, Yahoo and Microsoft networks, something like Trillian) so that I could stop using other messenger clients. I'm sure it wouldn't be easy but I think it would be worth the effort.

Time to put Opera Unite to the test...

And another one - before you ship the RC build you should have a volume control in the Media player Unite service.

One should also have the ability to customize how his Unite homepage looks. For instance, I neither want "Tomis01" (I want just a plain, simple, "Tomis") nor the computer's name displayed in the page.

I have mixed feelings about the note in the page saying "What is Opera Unite?" - it's an invitation to hackers, basically. I hope Unite's security is on the level.

Unite is great, by the way, loving it so far.

Thanks, borg. Makes sense for the discover feature if it's discover behaviour actually worked.

It always shows "No users found", which has not helped me discover Opera Unite at all.

However:
- Unite panel > My Opera Unite page context menu > Local Opera Unite users > Discover Opera Unite users
I noticed the word "Local". How local does Opera Unite consider being local. This is the World Wide Web, not the Local Wide Web. I am in Australia. Guess I am currently out of luck for local Opera Unite users.

How about having three radio button menu items:
- Discover no Opera Unite users
- Discover local Opera Unite users
- Discover all Opera Unite users
At the moment, "Discover Opera Unite users" can cause more confusion than discovery. This kind of feature might be better to open a Web page and let the Web page do all the discovery work. http://unite.opera.com/discover/
