Update on hardware acceleration in Opera 12

April 20, 2012 · by Huib Kleinhout

Here at Opera HQ, we're buckling down for the final push before the beta launch of Opera 12. Right now, Wahoo is getting more complete, with even more fun things to come as we get closer to launch. We have one of those fun things today, in fact. This new snapshot includes the first look at the DirectX backend. Most users on Vista and Windows 7 will by default use this backend instead of the OpenGL backend for performance and stability reasons, but be aware that currently WebGL support using the OpenGL backend is more complete than when using DirectX.

There's also another change in this snapshot. After careful consideration and extensive testing, we've decided to let users of Opera 12 opt-in to WebGL and hardware acceleration.

We're doing this for an important reason. We want to bring the first true hardware accelerated browser to market. This means using the graphics processor to boost rendering speeds not only for the pages themselves, but also the UI of the browser. It means making it an awesome experience for as many Opera desktop users as possible, whether they're on Windows XP, Linux or Lion.

But in some cases, our hardware accelerated speeds do not yet beat our incredibly optimized software backend, Vega. Shipping a feature that could actually be less effective at boosting speed is a big no-no, especially if its a final release that many people will use for day-to-day browsing.

Now, if you're reading this blog post, you're probably in the group of people who will want to turn on WebGL and hardware acceleration. You enable these features by setting both opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableHardwareAcceleration and opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableWebGL to 1, then saving and restarting Opera.

Try it in this release and see how you like it. We think it ensures that Opera 12 will be a great release for everyone, whether you are a browser expert or just discovering Opera for the first time.

As Wahoo is approaching a beta release, we're focusing on stability and fixing regressions. This build includes an important performance and stability fix for plugins on Windows, and should speed up scrolling with plugins significantly.

Known Issues
  • HTML5 Drag and Drop is work in progress. Things like dragging to and from external applications may not work. Some existing demo sites may not work fully
  • HTML5test.com could freeze or show other problems on Mac
  • OTW-8246 Opera 64-bit on Windows not supported on Google+
  • DSK-361109 Address dropdown not populated when searching page content with multiple words

  • DSK-357831 [Windows] [HWA] Negative letter spacing with DirectX on 64-bit builds

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

With Direct3D 10.1 (Level 10.0) backend the rendering is off at places. Some fonts in the interface and websites are different and some inline images on websites are clipped, for example the subforum links at http://forums.eventscripts.com/index.php

It would be helpful to know your Windows version, details of your card (and the drivers you are using), along with a screenshot. As these types of bugs are often very specific to the setup of your machine.

Also a reminder to all. We would prefer links to screenshots. Don't post them inline as it slows page loading for everyone.

I was hoping this snapshot would fix a lot of the problems I was having with previous 64 bit builds. But I still get plugin crashes on Youtube (less frequent though), when I load the Youtube front page from speed dial I can't click anything and shortcuts don't work, Opera still hangs very often when loading pages or playing videos, videos often reload themselves a few times before playing. Also noticed some visual glitches, like the My Opera bar at the top of the page was yellow and pink for a while, and capital W's on this page look odd like they are slightly transparent or something.

Using DirectX for font rendering is a bit different than using OpenGL, so here we are closer to Internet Explorer than to Firefox or Chrome. For example, in this case site is using 5 space symbols to make place for image, and spaces in DirectX and OpenGL have different width.

In future we might make an opera:config option to let you choose preferred backend: DirectX or OpenGL.

If they do not support full HWA on Windows XP (by which I mean supporting Direct3D 9 as a full acceleration backed) - then they just can't keep up with their own words.

Then why did they take it in the first place? You know, I have been patiently waiting for Direct3D 9 acceleration since an year - so my Windows 7 computer (the graphics card only supports DirectX 9) with Opera can beat the competition browsers.

    Thank you for this build.

I tested this version under Linux x64 on the page http://www.theverge.com/ (seen on Why does Opera scrolling sucks? and Horrible Opera Scrolling Performance? No Fix In Sight).

I'm sad this build also not changed anything. Turning HWA on makes the whole thing even worse.

I'm really happy that there's a big group of people who are keen to use their webcamera, microphone etc. on the websites, but besides, please don't forget about us, those who just want to browse a web page smoothly in 2012.

  • ll3moFreitag, 20. April 2012 13:36:25

This is an incredibile step forward here.
Hwa was really slow on w7 and not working on w8cp (same notebook). With directx hwa, all is working nice. There is some lag problem on gmail, on window resizing and on tab preview, but its so much better than previous hwa.
Flash seems to be more stable too.
Only one thing: address bar seems dont scale with skin icon dimension percentual.

By the way thank you so much for this work! Cheers!

The hardware acceleration was very slow on every machine I've tested (2-3 years old laptops and machines), so I'd like it off, but still keep WebGL support.

I think it was the correct decision to disable HWA. There is too much good stuff in Opera 12 to delay it much further.

This release cycle is perhaps the longest I can ever recall.

I just hope that once Opera 12 is out, we the work continues on getting HWA working at full speed.

I've also been experiencing all manner of UI issues that for some reason or another don't appear in the screenshots that I attempt to capture them in. Also, as many before me have mentioned, the scrolling performance in many sites is absolutely atrocious - theverge.com being a particularly good example of such behavior. I've also noticed a plethora of flash issues.

Good move with disabling HWA by default, though maybe it would be good idea to show once a dialog asking user to enable it?
Also, I would consider enabling WebGL by default, as HWA caused some issues for me but WebGL alone always works fine. :-)

Please refer this comment http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2011/10/13/introducing-opera-12-alpha?startidx=200#comment72424842 . I repeat this here again because you are going to release the beta version.

I am facing one more problem with HWA on i.e. my background windows are overlapping with opera-next tab bar. [seems to be an opacity problem in Opera Standard Skin]

I'm really disappointed for the luck of support of directX 9.0, also my graphic card is supported with chrome's webGL implementation, and works really fine.

Edit: I Forget to mention it's the first time Html5test.com detects the support of WebGL ( 25/25) on my pc on opera. I don't know why? and how ? but it still blocked by your blocklist !!

So the decision is now to let HWA stay in some beta state and ship 12 without enabled HWA...well that's a possibility. Let's see we get this stable enough to be enabled by default during the 12 cycle! cheers

stability smile heh..,but yes, keep it going.. but Opera still crash on start-up (at 90% and 10% is after a few minutes) when I have set up email acc on M2 with x64 build on x64 machine.. If I use Opera without mails it works good (some problem with lagy scrolling.. and other problems are permanently here,so..)
mail problem reported as DSK-361671,still here
scrolling problem reported as DSK-361672,still here so " and should speed up scrolling with plugins significantly." is not true for me or the problem is not with plugins on the web.. edit: yes, some speed increase is probably here, but it is still not as good as I want..

But I have to say.. HWA and WebGL is set on 1 for now (not on 2) and scrolling is smoother but Opera is still not good in scrolling as for example chrome is..
W7 x64;this build x64;GTS 250,Driver version - 8.17.13.124;Graphics backend - Direct3D 10.1 (Level 10.0);HWA,WebGL set on 1 (sometimes on 2 but as you said Opera is not ready now for HWA anywhere and anytime - set on 2)
