Wahoo 12.00 Extensions improvements

September 8, 2011 · by Blazej Kazmierczak

This snapshot is dedicated especially to all of those working on extensions. We have done a bunch of bug fixes, plus developer and discoverability enhancements.

As a developer, you can now drag and drop config.xml from unpacked extensions onto the main Opera window, and your extension will be silently installed in developer mode. Also the Extensions Manager will be opened, so that you can easily manage the extension. While you are developing your extensions, you also will be able to easily reload them. This can be achieved in several ways:
  • Press F5 in the Extensions Manager
  • Use the right mouse button menu on the Extension Speed Dial cell
  • Use the right mouse button menu on the Extension button on the toolbar
If you are working with extensions that use a toolbar button popup, you should notice that the popup window will not be closed automatically (in developer mode only). This will allow you to use Dragonfly together with your popups, making designing popup content faster and easier.

For extensions users we have added a nice discoverability feature. If the extension provides a button in the toolbar, then after the extension is installed a popup pointing to the button will be shown, so that it is easier to understand how to use the extension.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

  • Danieledarklink88Thursday, September 8, 2011 12:51:53 PM

The popup for new extensions is very nice, but you should change the path for the mac version! Instead of Menu> extensions> etc., it should be Tools> extensions> etc..

There might have been one unlisted that we had already added to 11.51 but had forgotten to include in the previous 12.00 snapshots.

please stop adding features? Time for a release where you are just focusing on polishing up the user experience?

What was this bug? Never had any real problems running Opera on a NVidia Twinview setup (and I don't think you had Twinview support without XRandR support). The only real problem I had was with first starting Opera and after it setting up the Twinview setup. After it dropdowns (for example address bar) would appear on the wrong screen.

And this is one of the issues that should be fixed.

That's already what I guessed smile And expected a small list of the important fixes whistle . Are these only fixes for XRandR setups or do these also fix the issues in NVidias Twinview? As NVidia doesn't follow the XRandR development (/is stuck at version 1.0 or 1.1 or so, maybe/hopefully they have all the XRandR support in XRandR 1.4 which is expected with Xorg server 1.12 next year. They are at least already contributing some modifications to the XRandR standards, so they probably are working on/planning full XRandR support)

It also has xinerama support. Which will be used should xrandr fail to report multiple geometries.

The fixes should work with NVidia's Twinview (see this section on Wikipedia). Plus the fact that I know we tested with an Nvidia TwinView setup. wink

It fixes issues with dialogs (including drop down/context menus) being in the wrong place. That is one fix but people notice it in different ways.

I hope that extension API will be finally expanded in Opera 12.
At least popup menu modifications will be allowed. At most - become as powerfull as FF extension API.

And bring back auto tab stacking. Pleeeeeaaaseeee

Hurray! This deserves a big cheers, since I was hitting the bug almost on a daily basis. beer

DSK-313873 is a duplicate of this bug, so you can close it as well.

    Please examine DSK-333391 & DSK-345019.
    Debian Squeeze x86_64
    Openbox: 3.4.11.1-1
    uim-skk: 1:1.5.7-9.1
    Opera10.60 - Opera12-1060
This is a bug that keeps being disregarded since version 10.60 that eliminated Qt dependency.

Seriously. worried It's an extensions related snapshot and I still can't see all extensions if I don't mask Opera as Firefox. My mind is full of f**k.

In fact, it works quite good when the graphic pilote is installed, but still uses a lot of CPU. (might be corrected with HA ?)
  • pursanovdThursday, September 8, 2011 2:37:34 PM

Thank you smile Extensions definitely need attention. Btw, will there be addition to Opera Link, to sync extensions and their preferances too?
  • grcobb321Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:38:11 PM

Looks like the scrolling is improved on www.appadvice.com. It's now smooth rather than being jerky that was introduced in 12.1020.

However, you still have to click on the page every time you go to the site before you can use the mouse wheel to scroll. Mouse scrolling did not require this prior to 12.1017 so it is some type of regression. After 12.1020, the page had to have focus before you could use the mouse wheel.

I've reported this on every O12 beta release and now wonder if O12 will be released this way or if this annoyance will be fixed.
  • PetruspetrusThursday, September 8, 2011 2:38:19 PM

Will you integrate disappearing scrollbars for osx lion in opera 12, like chrome has in their dev channel, or will that have to wait for a later release?
  • minhoThursday, September 8, 2011 2:38:23 PM

Fix Opera icon for Gnome 3 (alt+tab) please.

Could we (developers) have a bit more control over when the popup closes in use mode? It's supposed to close whenever it loses focus, but it also closes when a new tab is opened in the background, which means you can only open one tab at a time in Tab Vault.

    +1000 !!! love

Anyway, simplifying the work of developers and community who help Opera to grow is a very good thing I think.
  • PetruspetrusThursday, September 8, 2011 3:41:32 PM

One thing I have noticed is that the current download process takes up a lot of resources. If I'm on a netbook or some other low-powered computer, just waiting for the download dialouge to pop up, while dimming the current web site takes way longer than it should, and it takes equally as long for the download tab to open after saving the download.

Chrome's solution appears to be much more CPU-friendly, and it isn't as intrusive as Opera's solution. One is still able to use the webside as the download dialouge is at the bottom of the web page, and opening the download tab is optional. I know the last part can be disabled in opera, but it should be default.

    e.g
    1. Inbuilt copy with format
    2. streamlines the settings page. Opera is so configurable, just need to dig deep. The setting page can get very confusing.
    3. Inbuilt text resize for text fields.
    4. automatic tab stacking.
    5. html5 video buffer bar.
    6. Trackpad and mouse gestures are in a weird state.

    Simples makes all the difference.

In regards to HWA. There is currently so few website using it for production. Sure there few demo floating around.

Also still waiting for this small issue to be fixed...

Is it just not necessary or does it take indeed some more time to look into it so that other more important things like HWA and WebGL are focussed?
  • Ruarí ØdegaardruarioThursday, September 8, 2011 4:47:32 PM

@ritmocafe You original suggestion was that the improvements listed were not polishing the user experience and I replied pointing out they are.

Now you are just talking about some other unrelated things you would personally like to see. I have no idea what your point is any more, other than to say we should prioritise what you want and ignore others needs or desires.

This is a mobile web conference and it seems like no one from Opera will be a speaker... Opera is only listed as a sponsor.

Well, it's strange and I can't imagine how could you not spot this before releasing this build, but... Opera now opens popup even for extensions which do not use popups (both dev and prod mode), lol.

    http://files.myopera.com/sdrpl/img/opera-12-1060-ext-popup-bug.png

Is it just me or someone else has this bug too?
  • Bronco, DanishdanishbroncoThursday, September 8, 2011 5:32:19 PM

Hi, how come scroll is still choppy and slow on 12, while it feels so natural on 11.51 (both on Mac)? This is the big show-stopper for me. I would like to use 12, but it's painful to use, it's so slow. I've disabled smooth scroll, enabled it again, it doesn't change a thing. Other users have noticed that too on the Mac?
  • StanleyfreeriderThursday, September 8, 2011 6:23:33 PM

    it would be great
