Your thumbnails, now prettier!
The last two updates you got weren't that exciting, so we wanted to give you some more stuff to play with today. There are many improvements in the speed dial, but the first thing you might notice is that thumbnails are now generated differently.
Instead of always generating a thumbnail of the whole page, Opera intelligently tries to find a representative part of the site to display. To do that, it searches through all the images on the page and scores them based on size, position and file name. For example, an image called 'logo.png' in the top left corner will be a good candidate. Opera will make a thumbnail of the surroundings of that image, making it clearer which site is in the thumbnail.
Alternatively, it's possible to specify exactly what your page's thumbnail should look like. If your page knows how to handle the 'minimized' view mode, Opera will use that in the speed dial. If you don't need a dynamically changing thumbnail, you can specify an image to use for your page by linking it in the page's <head> like this (the image should be at least 114x114 pixels):
Websites now also have the possibility to tell Opera how often they want their thumbnail updated. The Preview-refresh HTTP header can be used for this purpose. The example below will cause the thumbnail for this website to be refreshed every 10 seconds:
Apart from all that goodness Opera now makes it easier for you to install plugins if you don't have them installed on your system. And of course there are all the bug fixes in this snapshot... I could talk about this for days
. Check the full changelog for all the details.
WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Highlights
Plugin installation wizard: Easy installation of, for example, the Flash plugin if it's missing from the system.
Sites can now reload Speed Dials automatically using one of two methods:
- HTTP header: Preview-refresh: seconds
- HTML code: <meta http-equiv="preview-refresh" content="seconds">
The Speed Dial thumbnail/icon is now determined using these criteria (in order):
- Send a http header to tell the server it's a Speed Dial request
- Detect big icons - <link rel=icon,apple-touch-icon ...> - and display them instead of a thumbnail
- Find the important part of the page (logo), and zoom in closer
- Apply CSS view-mode: minimized when generating the thumbnail

Appears to be a side-effect of tab grouping
Edit:
A lot more animated stuff is freezing all over the place, for example try to rearrange speed dial thumbnails

Now you've done some updates to the speeddial thumbnails, are you also planning to update the visual tab thumbnails? Last snapshots it looks like those thumbnails are getting worse and worse. After a restart a lot of tabs only display the upper left part of the page (and much to big), and sometimes they just display garbage. But fixing those issues is not what I mean (but yes, should happen), I'm more thinking of real time previews (like Windows 7 taskbar thumbnails etc.) but that probably requires HWA (so the graphic from the tab could just be copied, cropped and displayed at another place on the screen). But a more intelligent algorithm would also be nice (displaying the first <section> or something like it, or using the "minimized view mode" as the speeddial thumbnail does now)

But where's the fix for WOT? It still gets stuck on "Activating WOT..."
Avola10. March 2011, 20:20
Edit: when adding new sites thumbnails won't load at all, the space is left blank.

I'm not liking the way the new speed dial's "add a new site" button creates a new row if you've filled the last existing row (e.g., if you have 3 columns and 3, 6 or 9 speed dials). Instead, maybe there should be a special, smaller-width button at the end of the last row in this case.
Additionally, it seems to me like the new flow layout is ideal for resizing within the speed dial window: there'd be no scrolling, but instead the thumbnails would get smaller. There's no sense in this "quick launch" page having out-of-sight thumbnails.
