Opera 10.10 final and 10.2 alpha

November 26, 2009 · by Andreas Bovens

On Monday this week, we released the final version of Opera 10.10 for desktop, with Opera Unite as its main highlight. Gautam gave a fine description on the Opera Unite blog last week:

Opera Unite establishes your personal computer as a Web server. You are given a URL similar to http://devicename.username.operaunite.com/. You can have as many computers as you like, and each is linked to your username. This way people can find the real you. The unique you, physically on your own computer. Possibly at home, work, or at the coffee shop.

That unique you could be running one or more of the preinstalled or downloadable Opera Unite applications, or perhaps an app you built yourself. Note that we’re giving away prizes for new Opera Unite apps, so let all your creativity loose :-)

Quick links to some of the documentation we have prepped for you thus far:

You’ll find more articles in the Opera Unite section on Dev.Opera, and we’re also working on updating the Libraries overview so as to include Yusef and the various plugins. Stay tuned for more!

And now for the second half of this story — on Wednesday (some speculate that we never sleep) we released Opera 10.2 alpha, featuring Opera Widgets for Desktop. This release allows you to install and run widgets as standalone applications.

In other words, you can now build cross-platform applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux using Web standards, which is a very powerful concept. If you want to get started, have a look at Remigiusz’s Opera Widgets as standalone applications article.

So, lots of new stuff to play with — let us know what you think!

 Is 10.2 only going to be Widgets?

Daniel, I think yes, they never reads the wish-list forum. :/

Yeah, that must be why Opera 10 is stuffed with user requested features :troll:

Also, just because they READ something doesn't mean that they have to do it.

And finally, you need to stop being so egotistical that you can't imagine Opera having other priorities than licking the soles of your feet :troll:

Are you talking about the team or Tamil?

This behavior changes with this new release of Opera. It is now possible to run widgets without Opera being open, pretty much the same way that widgets are used in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Opera calls this Opera widgets for desktop.

From what I know Microsoft calls them Gadgets and not widgets

The only features I see is in-line spell checker and html in M2 vs various "features" (I preffer call them bug-correction) that are being requested for 2 or 3 years, just one more comment: I'll continue to be an "egoist", but I preffer the word "realist".

Come to my home and kiss my feets developers!

Somebody in this place needs to criticize...

That's just pathetically dishonest. Calling new features "bug fixes" just because those new features were frequently requested? That was my POINT IN THE FIRST PLACE! Opera added ALL THESE POPULAR FEATURE REQUESTS!

You forgot about automatic updates, Opera Turbo, mail server filtering/handling, customizable Speed Dial, etc.

I always thought Opera had better security than most of the other browsers. Boy was I wrong. That said, I do much prefer Opera's handling of SSL certificates to any other browser -- especially when I have a master password set.

    To the above poster:

No need to listen to fake benchmarks. People that conduct real surveys (Secunia) have found Opera is the safest.

I could care LESS about toys... until the guts are worked out. But of course, you have been at this browser now for WAY longer than any of the other current browsers and you're still not compatible with EBAY??? wow.

    @Anonymous

It is not Opera's fault Ebay does not work. Ebay has created a crappy script and made it work in their browsers of choice. Secondly Widgets may seem like toys now but Opera is trying to change that, hence this new feature in 10.2.
