Addon Highlight: Opera Theme Creator

June 8, 2012 · by Aleksander Aas

Part of the idea behind our upcoming release of Opera 12 was to make customizing Opera even easier, thanks to Themes. Installing them is a snap, but making them is fun and easy too! With the Opera Theme Creator, you can get creative on your own desktop.

This addon by Michael in our Product Management Team is as simple as it sounds. Four simple steps and you too can be a theme creator!

  1. Install the Opera Theme Creator Addon.
  2. Go to your favorite wallpaper site and click the extension button.
  3. Hover any image you want to create a theme out of.
  4. Apply to Opera!

Once you've made your theme, you can share it with everyone else by submitting it to our Themes Catalog! Remember that this extension requires Opera 12, which is currently in beta. (That might change very soon though.)

In the meantime, if you want to know even more about making themes, we have all the info you need in our tutorial.

Somehow this new theming method seems very familiar. Years ago you could, if i remember correctly, pick any image and use it as a background for Opera's interface, how is this any different?

Sooooo... where's the actual link to the extension?

lack of ability to change basic icons. that would be very useful as many users complain about triangle instead of good intuitive trash bin

I'm not impressed by this new theme thing. A WYSWYG skin editor for the old skin format. That would be something.

It's not really a theme. I love them, because they had costume buttons and so. Now just a nice picture, but with the same function, no matter what i do. I loved the old real themes. It's just a bg, not a real theme.

    +1

... but I fear that will never come - they change the skin from snapshot to snapshot ...

    :rip: skins

ho, ho - stop. Nobody said that skins are gone, skins are still the main thing.

Just because some people don't update or re-upload their skins to the new addons page, it doesn't mean they are dead. Everyone is free to skin Opera 12 as (s)he likes and to upload her/his creation to the addons page as it was to the skins page before.

    Great!!

A basic feature like this should be managed by Opera itself, without extensions
  • QuHnoSaturday, June 9, 2012 11:27:08 AM

Yes, but even when Opera can manage it itself the themes should still be installable from the addons page. That's good for the "hunter / gatherer" part of the community

    @quhno

no, i meant, inactive skin developers may unaware about the notice of reuploading skin. This results many cool skins, dumped.
