Instant love for Opera

June 15, 2011 · by Aleksander Aas

Good news everyone! Apparently shortly is now and Google Instant finally supports Opera without masking or using any tricks!

How do you test it? It's simple, just go to Google and start searching. If you previously masked as Firefox please remove the masking so we can get more feedback on this new implementation!

I think I'll never use it.
  • AlexeyMittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 11:54:40

hooray for one more site stopping Opera discrimination!

p.s. Theoretically, was it possible to add something to browser.js, so it broke Google's browser sniffing code?

It works nicely, but the problem is that we still don't get the new image search layout etc. - so I actually still have to mask as Firefox to use all the new features. Maybe Google, could you come up with support for the new image search for Opera as well?

But in general: Finally, good work Google - keep it up

Google Must start to develops to Any Browser.
I do not like try to use a service and say:
"your browser is old, use the "fantastic" chrome"
WTF? My Opera is not old! Is better than your #### chrome! (and I not want to use chrome!!)

    p.s.: I like the traditional search, I desactivate instant-search

Same here - liking the new feature for Opera but "the real deal" would be much appreciated.

Nice! Things are certainly looking up for the relationship between Google and Opera! Now if only Gmail labels were the same as Opera Mail labels...

Pleace can some body define operamini4me?
  • MyOpera team, please fix this!Mittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 13:23:58

"Shortly" translates to 9 months in Google engineer speak. That sounds like a similar dialect to Opera engineers when they say "soon".

None of these experiments works in Opera - the new image search layout is also not in testing anymore, they released it for Safari, Firefox, Chrome,... long ago. I will identify as Opera and wait for Google to upgrade my image search experience

I hate Google Instant, so one of the first things I did this morning was disable the functionality. One thing I did notice before I switched it off, however, was that the apostrophe key doesn't work for some reason (German keyboard layout); if I try to type in a genitive, the search box refuses to recognise the apostrophe and instead automatically types in the next-suggested letter. Observed with both 11.10 and the current Next build, and whether I mask as Firefox or not. Other browsers don't have the problem (I tested with Iron and Firefox).
  • PhaaakEMittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 14:51:49

I hate the fact that the inputfield gets all the keyboard input even when it's not focused, it messes with single-key shortcuts.
  • JimMittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 14:58:52

I hate instant, but i do like the +1 and the image search features.
Mask as Firefox goes back on.

You should twist their arm to fix the gradients on Youtube and update all of their search features to work in Opera.
  • Zalex ;-)Mittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 15:02:34

"Is this only a dream?"

well, 10 minutes into using Google Instant Search.. outcome: I thoroughly hate it. Opera keeps freezing or crashing! The flashing of the screen when it DOES happen to function properly is simply annoying. Claiming to save users their precious seconds of searching, in reality Instant Search brings only headache! Thank you very much but I am disabling the option this very second!
  • АлександрMittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 16:14:16

    How to turn off it?

I can also confirm what Wraith5 said. If instant search is turned on, you cannot type an apostrophe into the search box. The key press is simply ignored. I've had to turn instant search off for that reason alone.
  • jtdcMittwoch, 15. Juni 2011 17:32:08

oh so this was the reason. I thought what is google thinking and the instant results clutter my screen. now that I knew it, I wouldn't think much on how it can be turned off.
