Core update with better CSS unit precision

February 28, 2012 · by Daniel Aleksandersen

New Opera Next snapshot that brings Presto all the way up to version 2.10.269.

We’ve introduced a single unified approach for dealing with layout’s fixed point values (lengths, font sizes). The new approach squashes our old limiting and imprecise rounding to the nearest integer for percentage and em values.

There are 69 other entries in the changelog, so go crazy! eek

Known issues
  • DSK-358417 (Extension preferences and localStorage lost on upgrade)
—work around by uninstalling extension, restarting Opera, and reinstalling extension
  • Very fast page loading
  • Adding bookmark from star menu freeze or crash

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

    Thanks for the snapshot.

I'm still getting a crash when extension buttons on the toolbar and freeze when clicking the bookmark star.
  • AvolaTuesday, February 28, 2012 5:18:56 PM

Installing this reset all my extensions' preferences sad

Edit: Holy crap! Pages don't shift to the left when they finish loading from cache anymore! Thank you, that's annoyed me since 10.50 alpha I think.

    Very unstable sad
Crash every time I open SpeedDial. Random crash when open any site

    Win7x64
Open ~30 tabs with 3 tab stack
    10 crash reports sending
    Downgrade to previous snapshot

    Update:
Crash when update from previous snapshot.
No crash with clear install without Opera Link (I fear turn it on) and custom search engines

    Update 2:
Visual artifacts with scrolling any page on top and bottom

don't know what you did to the page loading and rendering, but that's holy shit!!!!!!!!! so much faster reloading (especially reloading on html5test.com ) center of the page just dims and it's reloaded

All of my extensions have stopped working (WOT, Fastest Tube, Opera Adblock, Find Matching Images - the two last ones don't even appear on the toolbar, WOT does but it still doesn't work).

Looking good! Some good news - firstly the problem that I've been banging on about in this thread and a number of others seems to be partially fixed.

The annoying "flashing" during page transitions seems to be gone for the majority of the sites given as examples of the problem smile

However, on http://demo.yootheme.com page transitions are still ugly and the page is displayed momentarily before CSS is applied. On initial load of a new page, DIV layout is and menus show incorrectly. Reloading the same page with a click fixes the layout.

So a partial win. Page transitions are generally much nicer now as the screen is not blanking each time before updating. It still seems however that the config option "redraw after xx seconds" is not being applied all the time.

Perhaps you could look at demo.yootheme.com to address these issues; they're a good example of what I'm seeing on a number of sites using complex layouts, jquery, gzipping and minifying before loading.

    Seb smile

"CORE-40370 (Unstyled content while page with multiple stylesheets)"
Does this mean what I think it means? I know some people on the forum had this issue and now the fix is here. Thank you! yes

On a side note, why is DSK-357882 absent from this build?
  • BS-HarouTuesday, February 28, 2012 5:43:38 PM

CORE-7897 (Line numbers of stack traces of inline elements are reported relative to the SCRIPT tag) bigeyes

Increase and unify precision for most CSS length properties bigeyes

CORE-43099 (New XMLHttpRequest responseType "json") yes

Love this build! And I do really confirm very fast page loading.

(but what is the point of CORE-43232 & CORE-43492 without webcam support? sad )
  • Shane BundyoperabakerTuesday, February 28, 2012 5:55:12 PM

I just noticed that "very fast page loading" is a known issue. Other browsers don't have that 'problem'. lol
  • minhoTuesday, February 28, 2012 5:56:32 PM

    Go to http://www.marciafernandes.com.br/
Put the mouse pointer on "Testes interativos", "Rituais", "Eventos" or "Atendimentos" (on top).

    Oh,darn..
I should have read the known issues first.
I've lost all my saves sites in the Tab Vault extension.

Anyone knows if they are still somewhere located?

I had a crash on the Acid3 test when it got to 69/100. Tried to send crash report but as it restarted it said another copy of Opera was running. Win7x64
Edit: lol, it crashed when I was submitting this post too.

Crash on SpeedDial confirmed. Fresh, standalone installation on Windows 7 64bit

It runs fine on the first run when opera.com opens directly, but when I click on new tab, SpeedDial appears and Opera crashes.
Also it crashes on startup automatically, if the opening page is SpeedDial

BTW, impressive changelog...too bad will have to skip this build sad

Very nice changelog, good work! up
Aside from that, I still occasionally get the aforementioned runtime errors and crashes. I can also confirm these just mentioned visual artifacts - the faster I scroll, the bigger screen area gets 'smudged'.

I guess I'll be sticking with 11.62 for a little more time.

That is exactly what I'm waiting for. This build makes Opera faster in many synthetic benchmarks but for general browsing the DSK-357882 fix makes all the difference. I'm stuck on the software-backend because my Intel Celeron laptop is ancient with its GME965. lol

Is that the fix from 11.62?(i think so)

but this build i notice a benchmark improvements in my system

PK benchmark increase in 200+ points(previous wahoo build score 1700+ but with this its 1900+) (only software not HWA enabled)

sunspider tests improve little bit by 40 points.

but i like the fix from 11.62 snapshot though(i need more network core fixes not benchmark...i already know who is the speed king in my system and i am using it currently bigsmile )

    one thing i notice

why is this opera:config#Performance|HTTPErrorStrategy not present in this build?

    11.61 has it.

Yes it is, and I'm surprised it wasn't dropped in Wahoo first.

This build improves performance on synthetic benchmarks like SunSpider and Peacekeeper but it's DSK-357882 that boosts general browsing speed for me. bigsmile

As for the Visual C++ Runtime errors I've only seen that error once when I changed Opera's skin and closed it afterwards.

Same here in Win XP — I get about a minute of browsing time usually before it pops up. cry

Strangely enough, if you just ignore it Opera continues to function fine.
  • Pablo BellucciampkstroffTuesday, February 28, 2012 6:54:08 PM

This will be fixed in Opera 12?
  • Patkos CsabapatkoscsabaTuesday, February 28, 2012 6:57:41 PM

HWA speed optimizations are pretty nice, at leas on my machine:
    GL_VENDOR NVIDIA Corporation
    GL_RENDERER GeForce 8600 GT/PCI/SSE2
    GL_VERSION 3.3.0 NVIDIA 290.10
However, HWA is still unusable. It's somewhat faster but still it's just too unresponsive. For example I double-click the tab-bar ... new tab appears after about 1 second. I start typing something in addressbar, popup appears after about 2 seconds. Scroll is interrupted sometimes.

Still, these times are much faster and better than in the previous snapshot where I waited for a new tab even 3 seconds sometimes.

So, keep up the good work on HWA. I can't wait it to be as fast as software backend. Also stability is still an issue (sent automatic crash report wink )

    %appdata%\Local\Opera\Opera\widgets\

    The easiest way:
    1. Open the wuid-********** folders.
    2. Open the prefs.dat files in any simple text editor (Notepad, Total Commander Lister, etc.) to identify the name of extension.
    3. Backup
